Trying to find some advice, I have a 1998 xc700 with manual reverse, i noticed last season that when I flip the reverse lever to put it in reverse, and hit the throttle, i hear this spinning/grinding unfriendly sound, and the sled won't move, Does this sound like the reverse gear or one of the gears might be stripped ?? Any advice will be appreciated, I don't feel like spending another season pulling that sled from behind.
Thanks

there was a polaris indy at the shop at school, and it was doing the exact same thing. manuel reverse and it would make a really wierd noise too. we got new gears thinking the gear was grinded down, but it still did it. so we got a new chain, still did the same thing. so we just took the reverse off the sled. it was a pain
the 6" billet risers look sweet, can sounds sick :D ready for winterrrr

Well, when I frist got the sled, it was doing that, So I got a whole new reverse kit at a closeout price from Polaris, put the whole new kit in it, worked fine after that, been about 4 yrs or so now, and its staring to do the same thing again ?

Mine also has reverse... It does that sometimes... be sure and check to make sure you're getting full travel of the reverse lever and it's fully engaging.

If the reverse gear is meshing in all of the way, there is a little guide bolted inside the chain case that wears out or the little bolts break off. The guide is right behind the two smaller gears half way up the chain case. Had the same problem on a customers 98 xc700 last winter. Took me a lot of cussing and swearing before I figured it out.

sounds like too much freeplay in the lever, as previously stated, check that.

just needs a little adjustment. my 99 xc 700 did the same thing. literally i think it was just 1.5 turns on the linkage from the reverse pull to chain case and it fixed it, hasnt done it since. mine has a different lever tho, down by your knees. but i think if you just adjust yours a tad it will clear it right up as well.

I will try that, Sounds like the easiest thing to do instead of taking the whole thing apart. It goes into reverse, and it wants to back up, but then the gears just start spinning, making a whinning sound and there has been metal shavings in the chain dip stick.

your reverse on the 98 xc7 has a cable, no linkage i believe. it just sounds like the gears arent lining up fully, so like before, make sure the reverse lever is fully engaged. or possibly there is a sping in the chaincase that could be wore out... (much like a worn clutch spring) i havent heard of that happening before though

-holeshot skid plate
-fox reservoir front track shock
-fox front shocks
-xenon low-beam bulb (very helpful at night)
Just add gas and snow!

just make sure the lever fully travels from start position until it stops. turn it until it absolutely wont turn anymore. it could be getting stuck from not being used or being old?? or make sure there is no slack in the cable. when the lever is turned so its in 'reverse' just use a vice grip and see if you can manually pull the cable any further. i think your best bet is to take of the chaincase cover though

I was thinking of taking the chain case cover off and check to see if the reverse gear was stripped or anything like that, But it's a pain to remove if I remmber right, I've had that thing off 3-4 times now !

With it being a cable, it is possible that the reversse cable stretched out, just barely, but enough that it wont fully engage. it may be barely engaged but when you try to back up it slips. I would not keep trying to just throw it in reverse and hope it goes away.
I would suggest doing the pain in the ass work of taking the cover off to inspect it. I'm sure your getting tons of metal shavings on your magnetic dipstick right? the shavings came from some place. find the wear and you find the problem.

Hi, Yes, you are right, I've been seeing alot of metal shavings on the dipstick, Guess I will pull the cover and inspect, you are right, thanks for the advice !

of coarse theres gonna be metal shavings if youre getting a grinding, have you checked the cable for proper adjustment yet? if youve been trying this too long you may have ground of the inside of the reverse teeth but i would definately check the cable first.

No, I haven't checked anything yet, But the times coming before the snow flies, Its just a frustrating thing, 3-4 yrs ago I put in a whol;e new reverse kit, and things where fine, Now it's doing the same thing it did when I first got the sled, sometimes I feel like saying the heck with it ! Thanks for the advice !
