ok over the summer i got our of racing bmx. and i had this helmet that i wasnt gonna use. then i remembered my brother wanted a mx style helmet for snowmobiling. the only problem was it was black and... GREEN. the source of all evil! (were polaris people) so i decided i would paint it and give it to him. here is the results. let me know what you think.

BEFORE

AFTER

what i would have looked like if he didnt like it. (also my poker face)

Nice! Was it spray bombed or did you use a spray gun? How did you prep it? I want to do mine flat black like that and get some decals made for it but I don't wanna ruin it.

I agree with powermadd, what was your step by step process to get the paint to hold up like that, did you scuff the surface before and is there any sort of clearcoat over the paint?

thanks and i used to have pictures of my step by step but i cant find them.
what i did was take off the visor. i sanded the helmet and visor with some more rough grit sandpaper for the whole helmet, then did a second sand with a fine grit. i didnt have an air sprayer to get the extra crap off from the sanding so i took out all the padding and used water to spray all the crap out of the hard to get areas. then after drying i took some masking tape and paper so there wasnt over spray for the inside of the helmet. and from there i just used one can of flat black spray paint. i put about 8 layers on there. then after the drying i put it back together.

and there was some really bad scratches on the top but the sanding with the more rough grit took most of them out.

P.S. flat black is a pretty forgiving color when spraying thats why i choose to use it. at least its forgiving for me.

ok so heres the update. he loved it. enough that when we went to haydays he bought a breathbox and some goggles.

should match his sled pretty good.

and im sure it will hold up pretty good. i painted it in the beginning of the summer. he knew i painted it but thought i was letting someone else use it. so it sat in my trunk for pretty much the whole summer. i figured it would be good to bake it some. lol kinda ghetto but oh well. with about 8 layers it should hold... i hope. im no expert. i love how it looks with the goggles.

you're sleds look great. How'd you get the lights red and blue and the bumpers red and blue. i'm guessing you painted the screens in the air vents?

Not to rain on your parade but is that helmet a DOT or SNELL rated helmet? If it isn't I would recommend to your brother to shell out the $75-$200 for a new helmet. It's pretty cheap insurance.

its dot and snell approved. it was like 70 bucks to begin with. i wouldnt have raced bmx if it wasnt. and i dont like the helmets to show how safe it is with there dumb looking stickers lol i always take them off.
