Previous owner said that the speedometer didn't work. I only rode it once last year around the yard because it was running like crap so it never hit the trails. Decided to start working on it today. I pulled the speedometer cover off from where the driveshaft is and this is what I saw lol: All that is left is these 3 pieces and 1 ball from the bearing:

Well, being that the bearing is destroyed and it also ruined the key for the speedometer, what is the best way to get the little bushing out of the end of the drive shaft so I can replace it? Can i just use a small drill bit and drill it out?

^ No. Remove the entire drive shaft and try using a gear puller. That is the inner race that is stuck on there. A few blows of the hammer might take it off.. But I would try heat, penetrating oil, and a couple wacks of a hammer.. if that don't work, then the gear puller if you got one.
You got lucky. Go thru that entire drivetrain.

No, I got the inner race off fine. I'm talking about on the very end of the drive shaft where the short little speedometer key goes into. It's like a little bushing.

i use a slidehammer. hammer in whats left of the speedo key. carefully drill a hole in the bushing slightly larger than speedo key and screw a self tapping screw into the hole and attach it to the slidehammer. a little presoak with some pb blast will help. you will need pt#'s 8K4-47577-00-00(bushing)and 8K4-47715-00-00(speedo key).

Those Yamahas have been known to do that. We packed mine full of grease to hopefully avoid it.

seems like that year had a body plug in that vicinity for access. i usually pull the shaft out, which you may need to do to smooth it out for the new bearing. its a fairly simple task, let me know if you need more info.

I'm trying to do the job without taking the driveshaft out. I don't really want to take the chaincase off.

sorry but you have to take the chaincase off. As well you should, there is a set of bearings on the other side I bet are close to the same condition.

Are you talking about the bearing that is inside the chaincase just behind the gear? If I'm not chainging that one, do I still have to pull the chaincase off and take the shaft out? I really don't want to take the chaincase off if I don't have to.

Seriously, if that bearing was that bad, you might want to pull the shaft just to check the rest. If one is gone, the rest are just about there, unless that one just exploded. But if it were mine, i'd check them all.

I pulled it all apart, and checked all the other bearings and they all feel and look fine.

I didn't read the whole post but definetly don't be drilling a circle hole into the square hole, the speedo wont work anymore.
Try using a strong magnet to get the rest of the key out...

There is a bushing on the end of the shaft that the square speedo key goes into. That is the piece I need to get out. But I guess I could try to just get rest of the broken key out without having to replace the bushing as well.

Ended up drilling out the bushing. Got sick of messing with it when for $8 I can just replace it. But, we ended up taking the chaincase off to get the drive shaft out to work on it. Glad I did because once the driveshaft was out of the lower chaincase bearing, it just about fell apart in my hand. When the shaft was in it, it felt fine though. You guys were right though, it wasn't far behind lol. Now I will have the satisfaction of knowing that I have a slim to none chance of a driveshaft bearing letting go this coming winter!

And thanks for all the help. I am wondering though, when I get the new bearing for the speedometer side, how do I know how far up the shaft to put it and set the set screws?
