Hey guys, since this 97 XC 440 is my first sled, and my first 2-stroke vehicle, I've got a few questions.
First off, how often do you need to load up the oil tank on these bad boys? Does the oil indicator light let you know when its low?
Where does the dangly tube in the pic below attach? Or is it even supposed to? Seems kind funky.
Is the little red lever in the pic below the fuel shutoff switch? Also, how often should I be replacing that fuel filter, and does it look like it needs to be replaced?
What is that knob on the front of my steering stem??
Now does it look like the front is sagging? The front shocks don't match. The driver's side one is incorrect. I'll be searching for a cheap one @ Hay Days. LOVING that red skid plate!
What is, or was this thing that is riveted next to the belt on the belt cover? Any ideas?
How concerned should I be about the coolant on the top of the motor?
Thanks in advance, and I'm sure I'll have more questions to come!

check it every morning,or around 100 miles

It just hangs there, it is a fresh air intake.
Is the little red lever in the pic below the fuel shutoff switch? yes it is. Also, how often should I be replacing that fuel filter, and does it look like it needs to be replaced? Yes it is a good time to replace it
What is that knob on the front of my steering stem??
It is a front track shock adjuster. Polaris lost a battle with cat in the courts, so it is no longer used.
Now does it look like the front is sagging? The front shocks don't match. The driver's side one is incorrect. I'll be searching for a cheap one @ Hay Days. LOVING that red skid plate!

It is a spark plug holder

snug the bolts down, if it continues you may need new head gasket/o-rings.
Thanks in advance, and I'm sure I'll have more questions to come!

it changes the way the shock acts applies more pressure or less. It is kinda like the drag on a fishing real you turn it for more or less pressure. You could change the handling of the sled by adding more pressure to the front track shock, or take pressure away depending on what you wanted.

It could use a bath. I usally filled my 500 Almost once or twice every month that knob is supposed to adjust the shocks that thing Riveted on the belt guard is a spark plug holder you put to plugs in it and they keep them dry.

If you even have to second guess a fuel filter, just replace it. It isn't going go hurt anything if the old one didn't need to be.

Where's the best place to get stuff like air and fuel filters, spark plugs, etc? Does Dennis Kirk have a good selection of that kind of stuff like they do with ATVs?
Also, is my best bet to find the other matching front shock Craigs? I wasn't able to find one at Hay Days unfortunately. I did find a bumper though! :)

Better check to find where that coolant is coming from!? Like someone else above said; give everything under the hood a good cleaning. Then start it up after it is all dry and start it up and see if you can nail down where the leak is. All you may need to do is tighten a hose clamp we all hope! The red switch looks like a fuel petcock(usually horizontal is fuel ON and vertical is fuel OFF) Make sure it's in the off position what ever that may be when trailering so you don't flood it.

As for your fuel filter, I believe that it should be changed every season, along with plugs, and maybe the belt. IMO

Judging by the appearance of that bolt in the coolant, it seems like the coolant must be seeping around a seal by that bolt. Are there o-rings or anything under that bolt, or just the head gasket? Thanks for all the help and advice guys! By the way, does anyone know what other sleds used the same front shocks as my 97 440 XC? I'm having trouble finding a part number to find corresponding parts. They're the red FOX fronts with the black plastic pre-load adjuster. Also, regarding the air filter situation, All I have right now is #29 and #30, but #30 has a hole in it. lol So I'll order 29, 30, and 35. 35 is a filter, correct? I would assume so, otherwise that intake tube would be spewing unfiltered air into the carbs. What about that foam thats under the plastic piece on top of the hood, in front of the instrument cluster? Is that a necessary filter as well?

Babbitts Sports Center a good place to get this stuff? Dennis Kirk doesn't have much for my sled. How about dealers? Are there ever any good deals there? That hood foam I'm talking about is #44 in this schematic.

The number 44 in the pic you're talking about, I would put it back in. I wouldn't leave any filters out if you see any kind of powder. Keep the snow out of the carbs. and they shouldn't freeze up.
For the coolant leak, I would just replace the gasket for the head cover. Make sure you clean out the groove in the cover really good. A dremel with a small wire wheel works great for that. If there's any corrosion on the aluminum and you don't get it off, it's going to leak again. For around the plugs, there's o-rings and maybe a shim in there too. Use a little bit of Yamabond where the shim meets the head cover and it'll never leak.

Ok, I will, its only a few bucks. I'll have to take a closer look at the leak and see what I can figure out.
Now regarding the front shocks, does anyone know what the eye to eye length is going to be? Maybe I can just find a complete pair since the existing one isn't in the best shape anyways. I'd measure it myself but the sled is at my dad's. A shock re builder guy told me 11", but I want a second opinion.
I'm guessing the red one is the right one:

Well Well it looks like u have 1 fox shock which is good because you can re valve it and have it rebuilt I would try to find at least 1 other fox shock because then you would save a little money and have the fox racing shock setup

I just hope I can find another. It'd be nice to find another red one, but whatever, I can paint it. You suppose there should be that many flattened coils, or does it just need to be rebuilt that bad? BTW, look how tall is sits in that pic compared to mine! http://polarisman.com/site/DisplayModel....&Year=1997

If your shocks are 13.5 eye to eye length, I have a pair that will work. Fox shocks with new rebuild with new seal and charged. Mine would probably be cheaper than rebuilding one of yours and having to buy another.
They are in Stillwater MN if you are interested. Sell them for a good price.

Do you suppose the red one is shot beyond rebuilding?
I just found a couple of replacement ones in good condition, but they're pricey to my standards. Do I just buy one, or both?

Get rid of those front shocks, it looks like you have one fox and one ryde fx. Good sled to start off getting to know about sleds.
Like mentioned before dont get rid of nor take out any foam filters. That fuel filter should have been replaced three seasons ago, and I would even drain the fuel thats in the tank.
You have enough time to take the sled to a powerwasher and give it some Simple Green to clean the entire sled. Then start by greasing everything, I would take the carbs out and clean those, grease and WD40 the entire rear suspension...salt is a bitch. Now is also the time to get the ski's off the ground and look at your slides. Should be a piece of carbide welded to a long rod. 4"-9" (of carbide, thats what makes you turn) is common, also looking at a your rear suspension (from the side) at the bottom full lenght of the track should be a plastic piece called your slides that the suspension rides on so its not directly on the track. There should be a light groove running the length of the plastic slide that splits it in half. The closer you are to the half way/center point they need replaced.
One nice thing is that body has been around for a while and you can find parts anywhere. Keep us up to date on it and if you need any other help.
