I started the El Tigre a few days ago. Revved it up a bit and it started to leak at the Y-pipe and got quite loud. Louder than I feel comfortable. Are the exhaust springs just wore out or is the silencer getting "plugged" and getting too much pressure. Its a '78 and Runs good otherwise.

could be the springs, but look at any blockage at the outlet of the silencer. critters like to climb in there and make a mess.

The joint where the pipe meets the y pipe might be a little worn as well. Sitting all summer might have a cause a little rust scale to develop in the joint.
If the exhaust was plugged enough to blow out the joint it would prob stall the engine first. New springs are prob a good idea but when/if you replace them take the pipe right off and clean the joint where the 2 pieces contact. Maybe even use a little high temp RTV, but its prob a little too hot for that but it couldt hurt.

I have bought replacement springs a tractor supply before. If you look they have some that is a bit stiffer. I would use high temp RTV also....SLP reccomends using it on there pipe set ups. I think the Black looks better than the red/orange stuff

Well, I'm not a person who spends money if you can fix it without spending a dime. I cut the loop of the springs and bent a new one and it seems to work, but now I have to figure out why its running so terrible. It has a god awful bog when I go to rev it up a bit.
