My dad and I are thinking about heading out west this year. I was wandering what I would need to have done before going with my 121 ZL 500. No, I am not extending my track either. Thanks

Is it EFI or carb?
The only thing you can really do for it would be jet it for the elevation you will be riding at if it is carbed (should be a chart under the hood somewhere or contact your AC dealer for one) and clutch it for the elevation, again find the chart.
What size of track do you have? I don't know how big a ZL will support but I know they are trail sleds and typically don't come with a real deep lug track.
All in all I am sure you will have a blast and be sticking to the trails your first time out there and getting stuck alot if you go in the untracked stuff. Where do you plan on going?
In all honestly I would leave the ZL at home and just rent a sled out there. If you can't afford that at least rent a sled your last day out there .

Buy a shovel, rent a probe and beacon. Learn how to use them no excuses! You may not need them but you will need the shovel with the ZL guaranteed.
Recognizing that I volunteered as a Ranger, fully knowing the hazards of my chosen profession, I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps of the Rangers. Acknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite soldier who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by land, sea, or air, I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than any other soldier. Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be, one-hundred-percent and then some. Gallantly will I show the world that I am a specially selected and well-trained soldier. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow. Energetically will I meet the enemies of my country. I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my country. Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission though I be the lone survivor. 1) Grab bar isn't going to do much for one trip out west....
2) foot traction boards? why? unless they are an issue now your running boards will be just fine.
3) Hood straps??? that is the last thing I would be worried about, you won't be going up many hills with that ZL and I haven't seen a new mountain sled with "hood straps"....
4) handlebar risers, That is the only decent input you have had here, although they are not needed but defiantly help in all aspects of riding with the exception of trail riding.

If you're going to deep snow, and not willing to extend the track or other mods to the sled, then I'd recommend just renting a deep-snow sled to ride.
95 - Storm 800 - Modded - AKA: FrankenStorm - Totalled near 100mph at Tug Hill!
96 - XLT/SP with Storm 800 trip/trip and now EFI - FrankenStorm II lives...
95 - RXL -- Sale Pending --
05 - Edge 800 long track - Stayin' stock for now..

No need to be negative Usually stock boards are kind of slippery, The hood straps are a good idea because lets say you are riding on a mountain sled and u fall off going up or down a hill and starts rolling and The two hood straps that are there could pop off and while rolling down that hill your hood opens up and either breaks the hinges or the hood This just a preventive thing to do. I have a grab bar on my sled and use it a good amount of time, a good thing to invest in is handle bar hooks because they have use on and off trail

Not to sound like a broken record, but... If you plan on doing any off-trail, even renting for one day would be worth it. It'll cost you maybe $200 for the day for a decent mountain sled and another tank of gas. That $200 is a small price to pay for a more "true" mountain experience. I've been out west the past few years now, and would never think of bringing my own sled unless it was stretched and setup properly. If you must insist on only riding your ZL, you will need clutching and jetting as stated, but I highly suggest you think about renting, even if just for a day. You would thank yourself later if you got into the powder. Quote originally posted by Mad-Boondocker The hood straps are a good idea because lets say you are riding on a mountain sled and u fall off going up or down a hill and starts rolling and The two hood straps that are there could pop off and while rolling down that hill your hood opens up and either breaks the hinges or the hood This just a preventive thing to do. We're not talking about mountain sleds; we're talking about a ZL 500. Like ACG stated, you are hardly going to be able to climb any hills big enough to warrant worrying about rolling it back down.

Thanks for advise, don't plan on any mountain climbing but do plan on mostly trails and a bit of off trail. It is carb but the track has 1 3/8" lugs. I know I will be getting stuck a lot and my dad will be laghing his a$$ off at me since he has a Crossfire 8 and won't get stuck as often. One of my brother's buddies went out to Montana last year with a 121 and didn't have many problems but he was running a 700 though. If we do go I'm h&!! bent on riding my ZL

Go later in the season (you will get around better, and usually better weather)
As said before, get a Cat altitude kit need for were you are going, if needed at all
Your group should rent all reccomended avalanche gear
And have fun, cause you will
Fix it till its broke!

You obviously know nothing about mountain riding, why should this person spend up to $2000 on a long track just to go and ride the mountians one trip
You know at one time a 121 track was the 2nd longest track avalible, and yes they went to the mountians, the sleds heavier and with less power than his Cat
The most constructive thing you could have suggested was to rent a sled, but you think a rejet is all that is needed! good one

I think you will regret it if you don't rent a sled. You understand that your sled will have even less HP out west in the mountains right? Your sled will probably be making 50HP out there.

A 500 will do just fine. Just clutch and jet right for the altitude. One in my group runs a 99 XC500 with a 121, he did go to a 1.5 lug a couple years ago and he has a blast every time we go. so go have fun :)

I was meaning get a longer track if hes going off trail otherwise hes fine on trails.didnt meen to be an ass jeez
Also i know alot about mountain riding dick head. Considering thats all i do.
SXMTX- Wow, for 15 years old you must a wealth of knowledge about the mountains and riding; false. You drive out their yourself and do all your riding there? Oh wait, you can't drive, which means your probably stuck to riding the patch of grass in front of your house waiting for your parents to come home so you can ask them. Grow up, and when you have something informative to post, then type.
King of Kings- You will be fine if ride a lot of trail or poach tracks that have been ridden over a few times. Don't expect to break trail or go too far. What you will learn is that your gonna be much more tired than those with longer tracks and that you will really need to put some body english into your sled to make it do half the stuff a mountain sled can do. Make sure you never park up hill even at the slightest degree, it might be a good idea for you to park down hill unless your on hardpack. Two, take your time when your out there to get used to the difference in elevation. You wont be able to breathe as well as usual. Three, really learn to work your throttle, dont bury yourself out there by pinning it all the time or your gonna be stuck at all times.

My dads been taking his 500 power special out west the last two years, he definitely notices the hp loss but he still had fun. This year he did upgrade to a 800 mountain cat. For the first day or so you might get mad at your sled because it seems like you can't go anywhere without getting stuck, thats how I felt the first time I had my wildcat in the mountains(very heavy sled). But after that first day you'll figure out how to run your sled in the powder and you'll have a blast, Guaranteed. I didn't know how much fun snowmobiling could be untill I went to the mountains.

mad boondocker knows what he is talking about it may sound wierd but just having that extra cheap stuff like bar raiser and a grab bar help aton out west specially off trail where leverage is important!! for sure bring a shovel sence you not extending out the track... but if you wanted to go out west but not inta the moutains try the black hills( still big hills lots off trees and open play areas but mainly hills full of trees... also has 300 mi of groomed trails) of SD its great there trails are groomed every night backcountry ranges from pow that would need a 141" track to get throught to pow that you could have a blast in with a 121" track and not always have to worry about getting stuck! ohh i forgot the biggest thing rejet for both the hills and mts

Good post, and got me to think of one adjustment
Let out your limiter strap located on the front of the rear suspension, this will pick your front end up, and you use body english to steer, and it will help your sled preform better
Fix it till its broke!

You can't have any fun in the mountains unless you invest at least 20 or 30 thousand dollars. You can't ride the mountains unless you have a 174" track with 3" paddles. You'll need the most recent model year sled with a big bore kit and a turbo. You'll need an aftermarket skid and front suspension. You'll probably need a carbon fiber tunnel (or whatever aftermarket tunnel is the most expensive.) The stock handlebar setup on your new mod sled won't work at all. Throw it in the weeds, and get some trick riser with the coolest looking bars you can find. Your new sled still won't work until you buy every lightweight part for it that is on the market. You can blow big coin on this important aspect, but you can't ride in the mountains until you've done it. You're also going to need ALOT of brand new Klim gear to wear and unless you know someone with a huge enclosed trailer and a modded diesel pickup you've got your work cut out for you there too.
I'm sorry to say that the ZL just won't cut it. You might as well start really dropping a lot of quarters in your change jar because it's not going to be cheap to get ready to go out west. You seriously can't have any fun until you've done all that.
1990 Indy 400 (Slightly modded with welded tunnel cracks and various used Indy parts from models throughout the 90's)
2006 Stihl Chainsaw
1980's Vintage Lawnboy Lawnmower
2005 Husqvarna Weed Whacker (It sucks to rewind the string, but that 31cc motor sure is torquey!)
2000 Polaris XCSP Edge 600 (1.5" Track, 22x40 gearing, Aaen exhaust, Student Driver pivot riser package)
2008 RMK 600 144"

Exactly now a bunch of these over priveliged kids think that exact thing. I remember going to MT with a 93 XLT and riding Lolo. Ride what ya have if you dont want to rent dont... Ride your sled the best ya can.
One cheap thing that could help is going down a tooth on your top gear for a little more bottom end. And like mentioned risers will help you contorl your sled a lot better off trail.
