I was thinking about how to make my sleds a little quieter. 98 Xc600's. They seem really loud compared to other sleds of similar power. I was thinking of wrapping the can with heat resistane sound deadening material to reduce the 'tingy' sound? And maybe then put some around the belly and hood.
Any one ever try this?

I have not tried to make any of my sleds quieter but I think that your idea would help.

One issue you might want to consider is the extra heat you will be holding in under your hood. Not sure if it will be enough to do any damage or effect performance but something to think about

Maybe you could fab a can off a newer sled to fit? I have a couple stock cans off 600-700 Edge sleds if you want to tackle that project, they are quiet.

I kind of know what you mean, my '98 700 is pretty loud too, compared to most eveyone else I ride with that is also stock. I have to start my wife's 500 first, other wise I can never hear it fire up if mine were running first. . . .

I've read that the 98's were kind of loud overall, guess it must be true.

Not sure really how much help an exterior wrap like you explained is going to help, the sound SHOULDN'T be leaking out thru the system, but coming out the end of the pipe.

RMK KING has a great idea. I think the only thing you would have to do is make a new exit hole in your belly pan and maybe a differnt support braket? I also have a stock can from an 03 700 pro x laying in my garage.

I had the ol 98 XC 700, loud stock, with my mbrp race can on it, it was ridiculous. Wish I still had that sled, it was a screamer.

His idea will not hold in any extra heat, it will actually reduce the heat in the engine compartment because it will keep all the heat in the exhaust pipe and push it out instead of keeping some of the heat under the hood.

Maybe you understood it as he would put sound / heat wrap all around the hood and belly? In that case you would be right, it would be hotter.

I have a slp can on mine (soon to be going back to stock) and you can tell my exhaust is aftermarket for sure from idle all the way up to wot. After awhile I noticed the slp can got annoying while cruising. I also know a guy on here who got a ticket with a slp on his sled.

+1 My 700 is pretty loud at an idle but def seems quieter than stock while riding.

As far as the edge/pro-x can, I might be wrong but I think the biggest change you would have to make is relocating the hole in you bellypan. I think the edge can exits from the front of the can, and yours exits from the rear.

I removed my SLP exhaust set up on my 98 700 due to tickets being written and keeping the integrity of the sport.

Looks like I have a couple options. I'd really have to check the space requirements for fit a can from a Edge or newer sled. For this price of the material, might be cheaper to go with a different can.
My cousin has an Edge 600 Classic with the 600 BB. That thing must be 1/2 as loud as mine. He rides mine and asks if it has an aftermarket pipe and can on it. Nope, all stock. For some reason, mine does seem much more snappy than his Edge.

Anyone want to send me a Edge can that is collecting dust and rust? I'll pay shipping. If not, I suppose I can find one on Craigslist pretty cheap.

Inside the can or the pipes? If it's in the can I don't know how it would get in the engine. Unless the pieces are big and can't be reomved without cutting it open. Exhaust pressure should keep them in the can.
