I've been pondering this whole clutch issue. Does anyone have any kind of chart or something that tells if using a "X" colored spring with "X" cam arms what the engagement, shift, backshift, etc.. is? I've been looking for clues on this for a while and haven't found a thing, not even a hint.
Like this:
Polaris Blue Primary spring (120/300) with 10M-5 (49.5 gram) weights.
Engagement is XXXX rpm's
Shift up is XXXX rpm's
How the backshift is?
I think this would benefit a lot of people if there was something. OR is it just guesswork?
Or is there possibly some sort of equation for figuring this out?

It all depedends on your sled really. There is no chart that is universal really. Your best bet is to find where you make peak HP at what RPM. Decide where you want your primary to engate at. Whether you want it to be agressive and start at like 4000 RPMs or a little more gentle. Than find out how that rate affects your RPMs on top, and adjust your weights from there. Than if you throw gearing in there it will change it all up again. Adjsutable weights are great for tuning so you dont need to drop 50 on new weights every time you change springs. Lot of guess and check is how I always went about it, but finding a guy with the same sled and robbing his setup works too.
Recognizing that I volunteered as a Ranger, fully knowing the hazards of my chosen profession, I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps of the Rangers. Acknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite soldier who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by land, sea, or air, I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than any other soldier. Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be, one-hundred-percent and then some. Gallantly will I show the world that I am a specially selected and well-trained soldier. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow. Energetically will I meet the enemies of my country. I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my country. Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission though I be the lone survivor. What I found out so far:
I had a Polaris Gold spring (100/275)in with 10mw weights (46g) and engagement was at 4500 rpm.
Noticed there was a sticky weight. Cleaned and engagement dropped to 4000 rpm.
Installed a Speedwerx Black spring (130/300) and 10 (51.5g) weights and engagement was still 4000 rpm +-100.
This was just run on the stand, but it sounded like the engine was cranking some serious rpm's on the top end (hood open, forgot to look at tach.) BUT, it did seem to perform better than the setup with the Gold spring.
I also read this: Quote Engagement can be varied from about 4600 to 5200 RPM just by varying the amount of weight in the hole closest to the pin.
The important thing to remember is: the pivot hole controls the bottom end, the middle hole controls the midrange, and the tip hole controls the top end.
This was said about the adjustable Thunder Shift weights. http://www.thunderproducts.com/media-tskrr.htm
Are these weights really that good? Anybody using them?
Then you throw in a multi-angle helix and everything changes...again. So, a steeper helix loads the engine and makes it upshift faster. How do you know where to start for trying helix's? With the prices of them, I'd hate to buy 3 or 4 and try them and just let the others sit.
There's got to be an easier way.

Can't be done with a simple Chart. Each sled is different and with mods it changes everything...

I have a few color charts on my comp at work that list spring weights. But engagement rpm also depends on the amount of weight your running.
I got a lot of advice from guys running the same sled as me with very similar mods and that got me a long way in a short period for less $.

Test and tune, test and tune, test and tune..... repeat 100X. It's the only way to get the right setup for your sled. Until the temp changes or you go up in elevation. Right now I'm running a setup in my 96 xlt that will not work in other similar stock xlt's but lets my sled run VERY well.
Clutching is theory that is applied by the individual. No one can grab a calibration out of the air, hand it to you and say it is perfect for how you ride. There isn't a formula to plug numbers into.
Ask questions for the basics, but the final details are what you have to tune in.
96 xlt sks/rmk. custom 5.5 inch riser on the bars, custom air intake, custom front shock mounts, custom oil feed channel in block to inner pto end bearing, primer (I hate chokes), custom = I made it myself

O.K. then, If I keep the 10 (51.5g) weights, what spring would give me approx. 4500-5000 engagement. I can tune from there, just don't want to dump tons of $$ to get it right. Springs are cheap, weights are not.

Just FYI I am sure you know this but a lot of poeple dont, when playing with your springs each manufactures colors are different from each other. Meaning a yellow OEM primary is not the same as a yellow spring from Speedworx or Goodwin Performance and so on.
Also I found out talking with some people that are realling into racing, 2 years is the longest you want to use the same spring. I have over 4 years on the clutch setup I am using again this year. I guess if your looking for top performance and can see the numbers then sure replace them everyother year otherwise check to see if the paint is still on them and or if broke.

Use the black with the 46g weights, you should be in the 5-55500 range.
You went up in spring rate which would have raised the engagment if you had left the 46g weights in. you then placed 50g weights which lower the engagment. You didn't gain a thing.
