Need a new GOOD scope for my 870. Link me up what to look at.. it has to come from bass pro shops. Eye relief is VERY important.

Are you looking for a scope with magnification? My wife and daughter both use red dot scopes. No magnification so no relief problems. BUT, I would say these are for short range shooting. 50-60 yards.

Last I loojed at bass pro, there really is not a large selection of shotgun scopes. If you get the right base mount you could probably get away with using a rifle scope.

So, nothing better to do while you are sick? Some of us are stuck working ya know!

if your shooting in the 50 to 100 yard range, the bushnell red dot is perfect. I had it on my 870 with the saddle mount and it works perfect.

There was a write up some where about the red dot scopes. If this old brain remembers correctly, the writer tested one of these and found that as long as you can see the dot-meanig if your head is not lined up perfectly-you can still hit your target. I think I am going to check that out with the wifes shotgun.

You may even find a dot dcope where you can change the COLOR of the dot. I have this feature on my rifle scope. I can change the color from red to green and vary the brightness. You can play with the colors to see wwhat works best for the lighting conditions. The variable dot size comes in handy also. My wife has a fixed 10mm dot size. Her only complaint about her scope is that the dot is too big in extreme low light.

Good luck with your search.

I am not a red dot scope type of guy unless it would be for turkey but even then I use open sites. I have a cantilever setup on my 870 with a rifled barrel with the 3 inch stupid sabot slugs (3.50 a kaplowww)

Funny you mention that. I hear that alot and of course leupold. I am thinking of these
210 for a leupold http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores...00_425-1-1
140 for a Nikon http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores...00_425-1-1

My dad has a bushnell banner? dusk till dawn and it was 80ish. I like that and it has like a 6" eye relief! But my brother says that when zoomed in the bushnells do not hold their accuracy. I also like the price of that scope.

Thanks for the link zip.. guess I got some more homework to do. I want to buy within a week. I guess I could buy the scope elsewhere and use my gift certificate on a turkey fryer. I am scared to sight the gun in again.. gets expensive! I need it bore sighted!!

For a shotgun get the Red Dot. I had one on my 870 and it was great. If you must have magnification then get a Nikon, best scope for the money by far. I have had Leupolds, Nikon, Simmons, Bushnells, EoTech's and if I had to replace anything, I would opt for another Nikon.

My 2 cents.

Matt, there are guys on this forum that shoot rifles and pay that kind of money. Your situation is not unique. But if you are in a shotgun only zone, YOU CAN NOT BEAT COPPER SLUGS. They are FAR superior to lead in every way but price. And you will absolutely love the hole they put into animals. My wife has shot deer from 10 to 45 yards with her 20 ga. Not one deer has gone more than 20 feet after being hit!!

You could always use the cheap (by comparision) Remingtom Sluggers. They do shoot to a different point of impact but that will get you on the paper. Then just adjust the small amount needed to be zeroed. Did you try the method I PMed to you? Took my wife 7 shots. The last 3 were just to prove to her that she was zeroed. And she is in no way any kind of a good shooter.

Many scopes have a problem when the magnification is changed up or down from the power used to sight in. Most of them are on the low end of the price scale. A lot of times, it is the shooter. Some people have problems when the power gets over 6X. The "shake" plays mind games and they tend to jump on the trigger causing poor groups. I know I have been guilty of this.

^ Nope I got your PM still. Was going to give it a shot after I get a scope. Man there is a big price difference with scopes. I can just about get 3 bushnell banners for 1 leapold. I shoot remington copper solids. $18.00 a box of 5 last time I checked. I HATE the price.. and lightfields are just a few bucks cheaper.

This thread reminds me.. a few months ago I picked up a Remington 1100 12g and I have not even shot it yet. Guess I better get this scope bought and get something accomplished. But archery here starts in 2 weeks so I need to get into that mode.

The county I am in is a rifle and shotgun county (one of the very few in NY) but everyone uses shotgun. I don't use a rifle because
1. I don't have one.
2. I don't need one. I have no interest in shooting a deer 300 yrds across a field. That isn't hunting to me.

Most the time I hunt back home and there it is shotgun only.

Up until a couple weeks ago I had an 870 with a Bushnell banner on it and I really liked that scope, since then I have gotten my dads old 870 with the nikon (not too sure on the model) and the scope holds the light longer for getting the last few minutes in at night and it picks light up alot faster in the morning. I shot a turkey last year with the old 870 and if i didn't have over-under sites i probably wouldn't have taken it, the Bushnell scope was still very dark after about 25 minutes of light.

Matt, I have Bushnell trophy on my 870, I just got my brother in laws shotgun set up with a Bushnell banner and Burris signature rings for 125.00 with a bore sighting and tax.

From my experience, sight it in for 100 yards at the highest power and leave it there, you can adjust your aim for Point of Impact without changing your magnification on the scope. Practicing with your gun will do more for you than any item that you will ever buy.

Here you go Matt. The best piece of advice in this string. This is where shooting the cheap (about $5/box) lead slugs comes in handy. You will learn what your shotgun tends to do at certain ranges. There is only minor corrections to be made when going back to the coppers.

I have to shoot sabots. So I will always pay $3+ per shot.. practicing with the gun just can't happen. When I get it sighted in, I am done. Last time it cost me $70 in bullets because I started at 100 yards (stupid). Not to mention I could not feel my arm for a week.

Now.. my 1100 smooth bore, different story. I regret buying a rifled barrel setup just because of the price for shells.

Buy the shells at the end of the year, most places have them marked down 50% or more. I picked up a few boxes of Federal power shock shells for $3 a box a few months ago for a 16 guage.

Ever tried a laser bore sighter, they work real good also.

Why do you HAVE to? Just because the barrel is rifled doesn't mean that you could not use lead. It is a little more difficult to clean yes. The accuracy of the fully rifled barrel is awesome. Beats the heck out of shooting out of a smooth bore-even with a rifled choke tube for anything over about 50 yards. Just my opinion. Everyone has to decide for themselves what is best for them.

I do enjoy bow hunting a little bit more than gun hunting. I like the challenge but most of all the peace and quiet that goes along with that time of year. Out season ahs been open since the 12th. Just been too danged hot to go.

My old 870 was Very consistent groups at 50 yards with a smooth bore barrel and rifled slugs, The deer I shot last year was 75 yards and the slug hit its intended mark dead on.

Ever try light fields they have tremendous knockdown power I shot this doe at 50 yards she was facing me and I had that small target and When I got their half of the right front quarter was ruined but still got meat out of it any way the slug was the size of a quarter when I found it. On their site they say you can sight the gun with these slugs up to 200 yards Here is a cool vid.
