My daughter and I built a stand for her to deer hunt with me. We put it out about a week ago on some public land that I have hunted for years with no problem. Went back to check on everything and it is gone! Some a- hole took it. Cut the lock off and took everything down to the green treated board under the legs.

I "know" who took it. I can follow the dumb !!S's ATV tracks right back to his house.

Now, if I get the cops involved, there will be more trouble. I live about 45 minutes away and this guy is literally a 5 minute ATV ride away from my stand area. He could do anything on any day.

Now maybe a did a dumb thing, but I put another stand up in the same spot. I don't want to spoil my kids chance to hunt this weekend. But this time I buried my trail cam in the brush by the stand. I hope he comes back and takes this one. I'll have his mug on camera. Then, I will go to the cops.

In the mean time, should I sit tight or get a little pay back? I'd like to rip his head off right about now!

Cops are the way to go. Revenge is trouble, especially after posting on an internet forum.

All you can do is report it stolen, I doubt the cops will come put there with you and follow his tracks. Wait and try to get a picture of him. And if nothing happens, go get it back from him.

Thats why I hate public land. This can happen and theres not much the cops will do. Guy probley mad cause you are hunting by his house. Not sure though.

I would go the route you are and see what happens.

Ken,

Let's hope that the little pecker wood does go for a second hit. Let your trail cam do the sleuthing for you.

When you do get the goods on him, go to the police and PROSECUTE.

Going for revenge or trying to prove in court, that which you only think you know will not hold up.

You can teach two very important lessons here. One to the Perp, that stealing will get you a record. And a better lesson to your child, that handled correctly, the good guy always wins.

Ever think of getting one of those cheap electric engravers and engraving a code on your property for future identification. On Fabric, you can sew colored thread in hidden places that can be used for identification later. On wood, you can bury some engraved nails. Lots of ways to catch a thief.

I despise Thieves!

Good Luck

The cops can't do a thing. You need to call the Department of Natural Resources. But see here in Iowa it is illegal to put a tree stand or drive a nail or anything into a tree on any public land in Iowa. Is this the case in WI as well? I don't know.

Goodluck.

Yes, nothing into the tree. Were not even supposed to place screw in pegs to climb the tree. Some wardens get picky when you make marks into the tree with a climber.

The good news for me is that I can positively identify the stand. I put my name on it like I was supposed to by law. This guy took the tape off that was holding the paper to the stand. But what he doesn't know is that I also put my name and DNR number underneath a couple rungs and the plywood seat board. I have my mane etched into the metal on the stand out there now. He'll do some really obvious damage to the stand to remove it.

I am not too close to his house. I am at least 1/2 mile away. He bought land that was completely surrounded by public land. He knew what he was getting into.

In that case, call the police and tell them your story. Tell you etched numbers and your name onto it and ask them if you could have an officer to come with you to identify it. The worst they will do is say no. Then call a different town and ask them. Call the wardens too, maybe they will help. You got nothing to lose.

Before I do anything, I am going to take a look around. This guy has rode his ATV all over the place. My bet is that he has it up somewhere. All I have to do is follow his trail. With my name on the stand, there is nothing he can do to stop me from taking it back. If he makes a stink, then I would have proff he took it. I would invite HIM to call the cops.

Thanks for letting me rant. I should tell you that in another life, I worked law enforcement. So, I agree: pretty much what you guys has said about the cops not doing anything would be true. I have no real proof. They can't do anything. But I am human. I was/am totally p@ssed off! But now I can see the other side of the coin very clearly.

My daughter wanted to find him, drag him over to this area that is covered in large ant mounds, tie him up and cover him with corn syrup. Damn near choked on my drink. I will have to keep an eye on that one.

Thanks again!

That sucks, thats why I dont hunt on public land anymore. In MI public land you really cant do anything. I know when we go duck hunting there is a blind in the same spot every year, I was talking with the DNR one day and just asked about that blind..."technically if its on public land then anyone can use it"

I know I would be pissed if I walked out into the woods and found some a--hole in my blind and you cant do anything about it, especially if they took it.

My buddy lost his tree stand that was chained to a tree this summer. Cant really do anything about it.

Good luck.

This did happen in MI. It is one thing if he was sitting in the stand or put his next to mine and another to steal a stand. Mine was chained also. I did that cause a couple buddies like to have fun with the other guys stands. One year mine was moved a couple hundred yards. Took me all day to find it. None of them fessed up to doing that this year. They wouldn't cut the chain off. That crosses the line on having fun.

WI is pretry much the same as MI for rules.

I doubt they did it. They would have fessed up by now. The youth hunt is this weekend.

We all know where each others stands are in case someone does not get back when they are supposed to. We don't all hunt the same property. There are literally 1000's of acres of public land in the county. Most places there is no cell service. It is just a safety thing.

Get proof first then call Police and/or DNR, if they aren't going to do anything about it then I would go with revenge. Here in MN, if anything is left on Public Land then it is fare game.

Absolutely sucked!!!!! Between the rain Saturday morning and high winds yesterday afternoon, the kid did not see a deer. We ran into 3 other hunting parties and the story was pretty much the same. One group saw a doe and her fawns Sat evening. That kid had already decided, a buck or nothing. No one else had seen deer on Saturday.

This was a wierd early hunt. I don't know if the upcoming bow season start (this Thursday) had anything to do with it or the unusaully warm weather for this time of year. This was the first group to get to hunt ANYTHING but ducks and geese.

I did some snooping around for my stand. Checked out a couple areas where there were ATV trails. I have about 6 more to go that I figure my "suspect" made. I have my hack saw in the truck at the ready.

Yes it did. We were in MI. Their youth hunt comes BEFORE any other season for deer or small game. Once upon a time, I was a MI resident. Back in the late 80's, they sold life time licenses. I got one. Should have gotten the bow license also but I had just started bow hunting. I am kicking myself in the a$$ right now!! I should have gotten them all. Would have been about $1000 at that time. Now, I hunt MI as a "resident". I get my tag sent to me in the mail every year.

Here in WI, my daughter is now too "old" for the youth hunt-at 16. But this year my boy starts hunting. He passed hunters safety last Sunday. First thing out of his mouth when he got home was "dad, I passed hunters safety. When can you take me goose hunting?"

If I can get my kids onto game, I will have a big grin on my face and will not worry about shooting anything myself.....well, almost.

woodbooga: (WOOD-boog-ah), n. regional dialect, common to areas of New Hampshire and Maine including the towns of Ossipee, Alton, Farmington, Acton, and Lebanon; one who attempts to obtain free firewood to fuel woodburning appliances in an effort to mitigate expenses related to home heating with fossil fuels. Frequently used as a term of derision by non-woodburners who mock the presence of loose bark and other wood waste in the beds of their pickup trucks.

Forgot the best part, in MI, the kids hunt at RESIDENT rates. And for kids under 17, alot of the licenses are 1/2 price.

Can't beat that with a stick!!!
