Hey everyone... I'm new to the forum and have a question regarding skis. First of all, I've done a search but not finding a whole lot of recent info on the skis I'm considering so here I go.
I do a fair amount of backcountry bushwhacking. Late last season I changed from a 550 Summit to a 600 Renegade. The thing I noticed most is my front end tends to bury itself when dropping down into a hole at low speeds. When climbing I have no problem cause the throttle's on. I'm considering changing to the Simmons Flex Ski Gen II. Does anyone have experience with these? Is there anything else I should consider?
Thanks in advance... THINK SNOW!

For Maine, I wouldn't recommend gen II's. I would just go with gen I's. I have had two sets of gen I's and loved them both. They float amazingly! They handle wicked good on trails too. By far my favorite aftermarket ski's so far.
Where you from in Maine?

PM440... how wide are the Gen I's? Are they a dual carbide ski like the II's? I'm just south of you... Sidney, got a place in Rangeley Plantation also...

Yup they are dual carbide, I believe they are about 6" wide. I would measure to be exact but the sled is tucked away in the trailer which is in the woods. Here is a pic of my skis.

I wouldn't recommend flexi skis to anyone doing backwoods riding. They sem to work great in powder, bu when they come into contact with anything hard, ie a fallen tree under the snow, the toe folds backwards and stops you.
What you should be looking for is a set of SLP powderpros or slydog powderhounds

Now that you mention that, they are quite flexible on the tips. Probably not the best for backwoods riding.

Next question... I've found Sly Dog, SLP Powder Pro, and Simmons Flex, all for powder, any others that anybody can tell me about that might help me out in the back country powder?

A bunch of guys on here recomended SlyDog powderhound skis to me. I bought them and just got them last week. Haven't used them yet but they look great. Having a few issues with the company right now though, not sure if I would recomend them yet, I guess we will see if they take care of my issues with them...

I am real happy with my c&a's on my prox. Was almost like adding power steering. They really bite and no darting at all.

How do they float? I've heard they are very hard to steer, dart a lot, and don't float for crap. But I was with someone last week at a snowmobile show and he said his were real nice, didn't dart or anything. And he told me that he had a pair of SLP skis before those and they were the hardest steering skis he's ever had.
What type of C&A's? I think he said he had the razors.

It runs fine, floats very well. no darting, very light steering. I had slp ultra lites on a 95' xcr 600. I like these better.
These are just the ultra pros. flat bottom with a keel.

the Slydogs are the cheapest of teh aftermarket skis, they looks awsome, but they are suposed to be great for the trails from what the guys on here have said and the info on the slydog site gives a pretty good expanation why.
Problem I'm having with my skis so far is I got them in the mail from SlyDog Direct and the holes for the carbides are 1/8" off to the left so the carbides dont sit in the grooves. They also took a knife to the burrs on the handle and its noticable. The mold looks cool but the actual craftsmanship seems shoddy. I guess we will see if they rectify it. Service seemed helpful but I want good skis more than a nice guy on the phone lol

If you want to reduce or eliminate darting you need to put shims under the back edge of the rubber spindle bushing. That will push the rear of the carbide down and lessen the tendency for the front edge of the carbide to bite into other tracks. Talk to Scott Bergstrom at Bergstrom Skegs.
I had C&A's on my Polaris Gen II sled. They worked great on the trails. Sled was a pig offtrail so I really can't say how they would be there.
