I applaude our government for trying to do something to help people who cant find work. Here in southern Wisconsin, if you work in manufacturing there really isnt much of anything for work out there.
Honestly, if the company I work for were to have a huge layoff or were to shut down, Im not sure what Id do because there is practically nothing for manufacturing jobs.
Its easy to call people lazy or slouches when its not you who is out of work, its much different when you are out of work, cant find a job and are wondering what you are going to do to put food on the table and keep a roof over your head.
I can see both sides of the arguement for seasonal workers. On one hand, I dont exactly think its right for them to get unemployment (IMO, unemployment should be for hardships, it should not be a way of life) but I can also see the fact that for seasonal workers, its hard to find work during the winter months because companies know they arent going to stick around, so they are less likely to hire them. Also, for the companies whom employ those workers, they might not get those season workers back every year because, lets face it, who wants to deal with the stress of trying to find work every winter?
IMO, we need to be doing more to bring manufacturing jobs back to the USA. I think we need to increase the import tax so that its no longer cost effective to outsource work to countries like China, Korea and Taiwan and I think we need to start offering tax breaks to companies that make their products here.
I think we need to start playing hardball with countries that take advantage of unfair trade practices, cheap labor and difference in currency value.
If we dont, we are going to be on the outside looking in, while China is laughing all the way to the bank. You can bet that if the shoe were on the other foot, China would do whatever they could to run our economy into the ground, so I see no reason why we should play nice.

All I can say is Thank God for Unemployment. Last March I got laid off from my job of 30 years. 10 day later my wife lost her job. You talk about a kick in the nuts. 3 weeks after I got laid off my company closed it's doors. I needed 4 more years to retire with full benefits. Lucky for me my union was in control of my pension or that would be gone. I can't believe how many resume's I have out there without hearing back from any of them. I have been to a couple of job fairs. The biggest problem I see at the job fairs is I am the wrong color, wrong gender, and too old. I was definitly the minority. Because a person is on unemployment doesn't mean thay are broke. Lucky for us we have not had to dig deep into your savings yet. For the last month I have been working a part time job with a friend of mine but this job will be done when things freeze up. This is with out a doubt the most boring Summer I have ever had. Other then going to Haydays I did nothing for entertainment. The way it looks right now this Winter won't be any better. I know there are many people out there who take advantage of the system but if it weren't for unemployment there would be more people losing everything they have. Not everybody who is on unemployment is a loser. PS this is the first time I have ever collected unemployment and it sucks.

I was let go in April after 18 years of working my way up the pay scale. My wife lost her lob less than a month later . We both collect unemployment and work part time jobs as much as we can and we both have a lot of sleepless nights due to stress but We live in a rural community area and good paying jobs arent here and the ones that are everyone and their brother is standing at the door wanting it. I am currently working part time at over 6 dollars an hour less than I was making and it sucks but my bills get paid. For our area we are considered to be earning 50% of what is considered poverty. I never thought I would be where I am today but I am and it can happen to anyone. I know people who milk the system and it makes me sick to think that has given the system a bad name because without it my sleds my kids toys and my house would all be gone by now. I dont job hunt every day but I do job hunt employers are getting bad attitudes towards people now because they are also getting tired of people beating on their door every day asking for a job. The temp services dont even return calls anymore because they too are over run. IT JUST SUCKS EVERYWHERE !!! So if you see me sledding this winter dont hate me just think that it may be the last ride I get to take before I halfta sell my sled.

I hear ya on that one. I had to take approx. a $4.00/hr pay cut because I got laid off too. It's tough right now, but hopefully things will get better soon. Right now, I am looking for a part-time job, with little or no luck. They are just not there anymore.

What you said about your last ride before selling the sled, let's hope it doesn't happen. I would hate to see you or anyone have to sell the sled to make ends meet.

If our government took the amounts its going to waste on socialist health care to cover people who dont work and illegals and paying out unemployment extensions and focused it on generating jobs for the people who really need and want them, our childrens children wont get stuck paying for these idiotic plans.

I am with you on part of your comments. But there are people out there that are just hanging on by a thread. They have done almost everything possible to find a job. They need this extension. Unfortunately, there will always be slobs that try and game the system.

In my heart, I am all for trying to round up the illegals and sending them back. But my head knows that would be so expensive that something else more important would suffer. Most every other country in the world has immigration laws that are at least as strict as ours. they just enforce theres better than we do. Our land mass is so much larger that other countries that I think that has a lot to do with not catching them.

I know some of this is slightly off topic but if there are less people coming in from poor countries that are willing to take peanuts to have a job, maybe employeers here would pay more for some of these jobs. I would be glad to pay a bit more to ensure that people could get paid a decent wage.

mackinsaw Thinks it's mighty convient for the neighbor to wait untill there's snow on the ground and to ask me if I would do him a massive favour and cut his firewood for the winter for money as he is incapable. Dang I got some work cut out for the next few days.

I literally couldnt live with myself if I sat on my ass all day and did nothing. Honestly there almost needs to be no unemployment.

Who says that most or all laid off people arn't doing something. I know alot of guys that work just as hard in the summer as they do in the winter "off" months.

I know I do. If I was not allowed UE, I would be classified in the poverty level.

I consider UE as part of my benefit package, since my employer pays that $$ in, since it is insurance.

I was directing my comments at you. You have job to go back to correct? Also you probably do things on the side in that time right? I am directing my comments towards the slouches out there, which will milk unemplayment as long as possible.

I'm on the same level, I'm technically employed by two companys right now, neither of which are getting contracts due to the poor economy. I am on unemployment right now because they are paying for my course and housing to get my heavy equipment operators license, housing and the unemployment benefits to pay my truck insurance and gas to get there. I could get a job numerous places in the next town to here for minimum wage but the closest town is 70km's away and an 8 hour shift would BARELY cover the gas in my truck to come into work.

Harry, I work my goddamn ass off and if there was no unemployment like you wish, I would be absolutly F***ed.

Well I guess I may be one of the guys you dont like. I have been laid off since December of last year and I'm still collecting unemployment. Yes I have been looking for a job all the time. But it's so hard in my area to find a job since all of the RV companys have been shutting down in Elkhart Indiana which is just down the road from where I live. So everyone seems to be looking for a job but nobody is hiring around here.
Also I still have not been released from light duty yet with my shoulder surgery. Since my surgery didn't work the first time im going to have to have surgery on it again. But yes i still can do some jobs so thats why I have been trying to find a job. Because I really do not like being on Unemployment but yet again it gets my bills paid. So I guess think what you want about it. But like I said its not like I'm not trying to find a job.
