Hey guys, Today after I was done painting my muffler I decided to go see if I could get my belly pan off. It was broken so its kind of coming off in two peices, but the one peiece that im trying to get off only has one rivet left and it just doesn't seam to come out. I used a 1/8th drill bit to drill out the middle of all the other ones, and they came out fine, but this one it drilled in a bit and than it just kind a spun and didn't really do anything, which heated the rivet up and started to melt the plastic, so I had to stop. I'm just not sure what to do, except for to try a different sized drill bit, because I think its a 3/16's that still fits in the hole without cutting through the plastic. Any ideas? Thanks.

3/16 is the size hole for the rivet but try holding the inside of the rivet with a small vice grip or a pliers when you drill, that may be enough to get it drilled.
good luck

I'm not sure what you totally mean my holding the inside of the rivet?

Part of the rivet on the inside of the belly pan sticks o into the pan area. Hold the part on the inside and drill the outside of the pan. If you can hold it from turning it should drill out.

Eric's right. That's how I have worked through that problem when I have a rivet that wants to spin.
Maybe you need to start with a smaller bit 1/8" and step up to 3/16" That can help also.

Well, I was using a 1/8th but it was melting the plastic so I had to stop, but tomorrow I'll try that.

Well I finally got it out, I went outside to give it one more try, because I have to go to school tomorrow and the head of the rivet was sticking out a couple millimetres so I bent it down and than grabbed it with a pair of pliers and pulled it out. Thanks for the tips though!

Grab a hacksaw and hack the freak out of it if all else fails. Cut the "button" off and push the rest of the rivet through. Use a magnet to get it out from beneath the engine area.

use a step drill or a veri bit or a 3/16 at an angle that should work, hold the back side of the rivet

Could also stick a small flat blade screw driver under the edge of the rivet and lift up on it as you drill. This should prevent the rivet form turning, because it is putting pressure on the head and pulling the whole rivet out.

It also helps to get the head off the rivet sooner by casing some stress cracks in the metal as it is cut and heated from the drill bit.

Easiest way to get AL pop rivets out is....

That's how I take almost all the rivets out that are holding body parts into the sled.
