Just sold the old sled (2002 xc 800 dynaport pipe,MBRP can). I am looking to upgrade to a newer sled. I would like to move to a 4 stroke sled. My step father has 2006 FST switchback that runs very very well. I was leaning towards that or maybe a yamaha apex. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

IF i were to ever go four-stroke, there would be no question, I would get a Yamaha. They are by far the most advanced out of all of the 4 strokes out and seem to just flat out, out preform the rest. A standard apex is alright, i ride with a couple of them, but i would look into an apex ltx which is the longer track version, or if your going to get used, look into an attack which is also a 136.

^ like stated above apex ltx is the way to go.

Owning a race sled is like having a totally hot girlfriend..... All of your friends want to see it, feel it and check it out..... They all want to know what it is like to ride it, but if they only knew how much time and money it takes to keep one up, they would call you a fool!

I road an apex 136" and although it was REALLY FAST in a straight line, it absolutely SUCKED in tight twisty trails. In about 2 miles of tight trails I was wore the fook, out and went back to my own sled!

The front end is HEAVY, and if you're not hauling a$$ you feel it in every turn.

The Polaris FST is a joke in my opinion... I had to ride one a few years back for work a few times. After 2-3 rides, I always made sure to go out and hitch up before anyone else got there so I could get the good sleds!

With the Apex the rear suspension is suspect. They are well known for the rear suspension breaking and for the idler wheels coming apart. Not to mention the hand/thumb wamers on the Apex are HORRIBLE.
IMO, the FSTs are just as good in terms of engine (as long as all the updates have been done) and the chassis/suspension performance and durability is much better.
Tough call. It would be easy to fall head over heels in love with the torque and sound of the Yamaha 4-banger, but the suspension and handwarmer issues would be a big concern for me.
Id have to go with the FST though. Just as much engine performance, no issues with the suspension and handwarmers that actually work.
There was a time when Yamaha was by far the best in 4-strokes, but not anymore.

Like I said before, my step father has a 2006 FST switchback. Last year i put about 700 miles on it and absolutely loved it. It blows my old sled (2002 xc 800 with a dyna port pipe and MBRP can.) outta the water, from outta the hole to wide open. It does feel alittle heavy but nothing that is uncontrolable. I rode a 2008 Nytro last winter and was disgusted. The quality was cheap and it was slow but fun in the twistys. I have heard alot of good things about the apexs so I was thinking about giving them a try. Thanks

like what octane said, be prepared for broken suspensions and cold hands! (and a deep pocket for that matter) yamaha parts are expensive! about 1k for that rear mono shock! think about it, reliability or headache? your call. those apexs are indeed fast, only in a straight line, but in the twisties, get ready for a work out. also those things are a pain in the rear to get out in powder. helped some friends last winter taking them out. took nearly two hours to dig out of three feet of snow.

X2. That's what I would do too (I'm not being brand loyal even though I ride a Doo; before Doo came out with their 4 Stroke I would have gone with a Yammie 4 Stroke if I was in the market for one, I just think that the MXZ 1200 is a better setup than the Yammies).

It depends on a lot of personal choices: Where you ride, How you ride, how deep is your pocket etc.

If i was asked the question, I would run with the Yamaha all day long. But that is because it fits "MY" needs.

If there was only one choice, choices would be easy. Don't ever settle for anything less, than you are willing to live with!

If you can afford it, the new 1200 Ski-Doo ( Renegade for deeper snow, or the 1200 TNT ) and if not, then get a newer style ( not the dart box or whatever its called chassis ) Nytro. 130 hp and a great chassis imo.

The Doo hasnt got as much horsepower as the FST and Apex, it only puts out about 130 hp.

Id love to hear an explanation of why you think that MXZ 1200 is a better setup. The Doo is heavier and puts out less horsepower.
Im not trying to attack you or say your opinion is wrong, Im just curious as to why you think the Doo is better.

Extremely true. We found that out the hard way. We had left Newberry and heading down one of the roads to Munising for the night. There was a foot or two of powder on the road, but it was getting dark so i couldnt play much since i had almost no lights. We come out to a clearing, and see a guy in the middle of the trail. There is at least six foot of snow drifted into the road. This guy followed his friend in it . His friend had a Mountain Cat, and he had a Apex. He saw he wasnt getting out so he turned around to get off of the snow. He buried it right there. It took 4 of us to get the thing untstuck. If we hadnt came along he wouldve probably been sitting there for the night without a sled. He said the one thing he didnt like about it was the weight. Other then that, the thing sounded awesome and didnt look to bad. I really wouldnt mind having one if it was set up more for powder and ditches. I also learned another thing, always have your cell phone on you with a full battery. One of the two guys didnt have a cell phone, so they had no way to contact each other. He didnt know if his friend had made it to the other side, or was stuck and buried the sled.

That guy with the Apex should have known better than to try to go through 6' deep snow with a 121". Any shorttrack sled would have gotten stuck.
You are right about how it sucks when an Apex gets stuck. You almost need a tractor to get them out.

The Doo 1200 is much lighter than either the Apex or the Nytro. The Doo 1200 is right around 500 pounds.

Personally, I am a Polaris guy but, I have always liked Yamaha too, My dad worked at a dealership in Reese's Corners, ON and he said their four stroke technology was advancing like no other and they were amazing sleds, so if you want to go first stroke I would just go with Yamaha because they have been into that stuff longer than Polaris and you probably have a better product, but if you suddenly want to go back to a two stroke, get a Polaris again! [:D} Cheers!

I have a 2008 Yamaha Apex LTX, and it is the best sled I have ever owned It is a bit lighter then the Polaris FST switchback and has 10 more HP. I don't think their is a more reliable performance sled out there. Just put on a Bender exhaust last week and it sounds amazing!
