Good afternoon everyone. I'd like to take a minute to update you on some new changes around here. Profile PagesI have re-worked the profile pages so that it is easier to find the information you want and there is less clutter. I still have some work to do but it's a good start. I took the "tabbed" approach, separating important information into separate tabs. You can quickly switch between them. My goal here is to separate most of the static content (IE. The "Info", stuff that changes infrequently) on to one tab, the latest things going on with a person (IE. The "Lowdown") on another tab, etc. Yes - kinda like the Facebook approach but hey, it works. This way will make it easier for people to see what others are up to on the site. A forum site such as this is based around activity and inter-activity. I'm hoping this will build upon this idea. We've had "the lowdown" on the homepage for over two years now. Last fall I added options to filter out specific types of events. I've expanded these filter options to the profile pages now as well. More changes are going to be coming to the profile page, possibly the addition of a new tab or two to outline a persons forum activity (posts, etc). I'm not exactly sure how I'll be handling it yet though. Friends and PrivacyThe old friends system was pretty archaic. Basically, if you thought someone was your friend you could add them to a basic list. Having just a list of people you call friends is pretty useless, in my opinion. They could be your "friend" even if they weren't really your friend. Now all friends have to be confirmed by the other party. The reason I did is because I have given users the option to hide their profiles. If you edit your profile, you'll see a drop down with these four privacy options.
- Anyone can view your profile
- Only people logged into Snowmobile Fanatics can view your profile
- Only your friends can view your profile
- Only you, and no one else, can view your profile
It's easy to see that the friends list is now usable. In the future, there may possibly be more granular options, meaning you can choose who can see what section of your profile. I also may decide to incorporate "friend lists", so you can organize friends into different lists. This will help you decide which friends you want to see things about on the homepage and also allow you to decide which friends you want to see which things in your profile....again, kinda a Facebook approach, but it works so I'm going to borrow it. Customize the Homepage LowdownThis is not a new feature, but I want to remind you all that you can customize what you see on the homepage when you're logged into the site. Just click the "Customize Lowdown" link on the homepage to get all the options. For example, if you don't want to see who is friends with you just un-check that setting and those events will go away. In conclusion, I'm hoping that some of these changes will make the profile pages more helpful to everyone, and compliment the already wonderful forum setup we have going.

I haven't looked around a whole let yet but so far I like it. Can we still see the last 10 or 15 topics we posted in though? I really like that feature so I can go back and see if anyone has replied to my post or asked me a question. It's a lot easier than going through every sub forum to find them, sometimes they are not on the active topics.

Yes, for now that's still under the info tab or in your "My Controls" area too...I believe.

I'll have a look when I get a chance Erick! Sounds great though. While making all of these changes is it possible for you to bring back the "Dark Theme" option which was available in the older version of the site. Much easier on the eyes especially while perusing the site at night.

I like it! Its so much like facebook. It would be really cool if their was a tab for "My Media" or "My Media Gallery", right next to all the ones like guestbook, and such.

Neat changes, Erick.
I like the four privacy options.
I like the tabbed areas, too, but I have a small suggestion. Maybe the "Info" tab should automatically show when a person's profile is visited, instead of a blank area where an extra click is required to view any of the tabs.

What do you mean by "blank area"? The lowdown is the default tab. You should first see the recent activity of the user (the lowdown). Doesn't that show up for you?

Nope. Just the tabs, as independent boxes, show up for me. IE6--is that why? There are a few other things that don't work on this site, that I have just assumed are due to IE6.

IE6 doesn't work very well anymore with many webpages, possibly this one as well, Erick could confirm whether that's true or not.
If you don't like IE7 or IE8, I would suggest trying Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari(by Apple), Opera(not sure who makes that), there's a few other's out there too.
I've used FireFox for a while, I really like it.
You are leaving yourself open to security holes using IE6.

For viewing profiles, what about having; Only a fanatic member can view your personal profile as another option!? I think this would be my choice if it was available.

No, it's that I have some web-based programs I have to use, that won't run on the newer versions of IE. I had IE7 for a while, and then had to switch back to 6. 8 is out of the question for now.

Unless I'm reading you wrong, that is already one of the options. That's what I chose, since that is the way SF used to be, anyway.

Some things work, some don't. I've pretty much given up officially supporting it. Only a small percentage of visitors on the site use it anymore. It's already hard enough to support IE7 & 8, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera. IE 6 is the devil when when it comes designing websites.

I just realized that when other people choose one of these two options, it is disappointing. Is there maybe some minimal information that could be visible to other logged-in members?
Or, would it be really annoying if I started adding people I've never met in person as "friends"? I previously used the old friends list as more of a quick-access contacts list. But now, with mutual friendship, that seems to imply that people are actually friends in the true sense of the word.
Erick, can I be your "friend"?

Well, it's still in the works. I'm going to eventually make more information available to non-friends (but those who are logged in). It would be nice to be able to PM or email someone even if you're not friends (unless they have you blocked). I'm not sure what other information we should have available to non-friends? Obviously, as a community focused on discussing snowmobiles, we're all kinda "friends" to a degree, but there's still information that others may not want some people to see unless they truly trust them. Any ideas how we should go about this? What do we show to non-friends?

The things that come to my mind are certain areas under the Info tab: Contact Info, General Info, Other Info, and Recently Posted In Topics. Just ideas. Thanks for taking the time to ponder this.

I just found another annoyance with the new system.
I commented on another member's status. Then, other members commented on the same status, so I received a notification for each of those comments. When I clicked on the notification, I could not see the first member's status, or any of the comments. I'm guessing that is because the member has his profile set to not show his profile info to non-friends.
