Well, today my dad and I went to an auction in Gardner today looking for another tandem. Well...I ended up bringing home a '91 Kenworth T600 tractor. It's got an L10 Cummins in it with a 9 speed eaton transmission. The only downside was no Jake. I bought the tractor, so dad said he'd buy the trailer...just haven't decided on length or brand. Any suggestions? All it will be used for is to haul wheat, soys, edibles and corn to our local elevators. Anyone have any experience with the L10 cummins? I'll try to get some pictures up tomorrow of me being a trucker.

Thank you sir...went looking for a '75 C-65 Tandem and came home with a T600. I'm still getting used to having more than 5 speeds, but I'm getting better already. I've heard good things from Tempte, Wilson and Merritt trailers. Do you know how long your trailers are? I'm thinking about a 40' or maybe a 42'.

We have been buying trucks this summer. L10s are good motors. They are still mechanical so you don't have to worry about much going wrong with the electronics. Some guys like that, others do not. I have an IHC 8100 with a L10 in that I have in Hatton right now putting a 21ft. box with a pusher on it. It's for sale too. From my what I've been told L10s are good. They were built for a long time and put in trucks and tractors. I've heard there is a brown block and a black block L10, the black one is supposed to be a little newer. The M11 is the same thing as a L10, but is the electronic version. I think that was made from 1998. I think the ISM is the newest version of that motor. You won't be setting any speed records pulling a trailer with the L10, but it's a reliable motor that is supposed to be pretty efficient.

We also just picked up a daycab 1998 IHC 9200 with a Detroit 60 series in it, it's supposed to be putting out 430hp. I think we're going to put a 24ft box and tri-drive on that truck.

It takes a bit to get used to the transmission and the splitting and such on the bigger trucks. It will take a little practice to get used to but in no time you'll be trucking.

I'm no fan of the Detroit 60 series, but that's just me. Harder to work on, and have lower torque rise. The L10 is a good motor, as is the M11 (same basic block) however, I dont believe the ISM is as strong as the M11.

^Thanks for the kind comments and the pointers. I'm getting really adept with the 9 speed...so much, in fact, when I drove one of the old grain trucks the other day with a 5 speed (2 speed rear) I went through all the gears and then popped the rear end and was about to go back to what would be 6th gear...ha. Good thing I didn't.

Jayme, what year is the IH that you're selling? My uncle has been searching for a nice tri-ax for awhile...maybe he'd be interested? What tranny does that have?

Dad picked up a brand new Timpte 40' today, so the trailer's worth way way more than my truck is!! Trailer'll be in on Friday, it was rolling off the assembly line this morning.

I think you guys made a wise choice in buying a new trailer. It seems like the used trailers all need tires, brake and light work, and have breaks in the trailers and they are still expensive.

I'll pm you about the truck, no use in hijacking your thread.

No joke, seems every trailer we looked at was patched together in all the corners. For a '99 Wilson, Johnson Trailer sales in Fargo they still wanted like $28k, wheras a brand spanking new Timpte was like $35k...someone explain that please? Cars, pickups, sleds, trucks and farm equipment all depreciate fast, but somehow that curve is that much shallower for grain trailers?

XCR440, There are a few Stoughton trailers around, but mostly Timpte, Wilson, Dakota or Load Stars in my area.

The l10 is a good motor and we don't see a whole lot of them any more which is good because i hate working on them. The block has seen very little change from the old L10 to the current ISM and is a pretty bullet proof engine, it should treat you well.

Why do you hate working on the Cummins? I prefer that over C12 Cat's, or 60 series Detroits.

Thanks guys! The truck was actually a fleet truck for supervalu out of Green Bay. Why was the L10 hard to work on?

The biggest difference I can think off off hand between the three is that Merritt's are single walled trailers making them a little bit lighter, but they don't seem to hold up as long. I see tons of Tempte coming in and out of our elevators. I can't say anthing bad about any of them but I know you see alot more older Tempte's then Wilsons, or Meritt's...

The main thing i hated on those engines was instead of a gear houseing and thin metale cover like on the m11/ISM it was a metal plate on the block and a houseing bolted to that and acted like as the cover. This was a pain to work on as mainly the one i worked on were in old junky cemet trucks that were leaking forever so by the end of the day you'd be filthy. The truck has probaly been thru the shop i work at since we sometimes see trucks super value has.

When i work on any L10 its alway in some crappy old truck just filthy nasty and nothing ever goes right it seems. I love working for cummins especially when i look at those twin turbo cats.
