I keep two ball mounts one with a 1&7/8"ball the other a 2"ball I needed to get the 2" off last week so I could pull my boat trailer. I guess I didn't think leaving a ball mount in a reciever for 9 months would be a problem...WRONG! That SOB was seized on there real good.

First, I tried some PB Blaster and wacked it with my hammer: Nothin'
Second, I beat it with the mini sledge all angles: Nothin'
Third, I used an air hammer on it: Nothin'!
Fourth, I got the big full size sledge and proceeded to beat the pizz out of it: I got it to go further into the hitch(reciever) thinking that would loosen it up enough to knock it out?... Nope, and I was committed to get it out now because now I could not get the hitch pin back in.
Fith, I wrapped a chain around the ball and hooked it to a post and my wheels just spun... Holy Shiza'
Sixth, I got my friend to beat on the ball mount while chained to the post with some pull on it: NOTHIN'!!!

I called it quits after that. I gave it a good soaking of PB Blaster first. One week later I came back to it and heated it up with a propane torch and finally got it to move and out after some well placed wacks with the big sledge hammer.

Lesson learned! I will never leave a ball mount in my Reese hitch longer than the time it is being used. I will also keep it gooped up with never seize.
You guys don't want to go through that especially the day before your first sled trip. So check'em if ya' got'em

My brother's receiver was stuck in his hitch. It was that way when he bought the truck. It was never really a problem until he tried to pull a buddy's truck out of the mud. It snapped the receiver in half! So he had half a receiver stuck in his hitch. He had to take the hitch completely off of the truck and smack it out the other side. I usually get in a habit of taking the receiver out of my truck when I'm done hauling something.

Let it snow.

Mine stays in the tool tray behind the seat. I never leave it in for that reason and people around here get a kick out of stealing them, and I got a pretty chrome one too!! I've helped buddies try to get them out and holy crap!!! It's amazing how strong rust is!?!?

I never leave a receiver in unless I know I'll be using it shortly. Both for the rusting reason you encountered, and the theft reason listed above. I always kept a plastic plug in my Ford when I wasn't using the receiver. Some SOB stole that though. Better a $10 plug than a $30+ hitch.

A mountain lion roaming the prairie found a bull, killed it and ate the entire bull. With a heavy belly, unable to walk, the lion laid in the tall grass moaning and roaring. Soon a hunter, attracted by the roaring, shot and killed the lion. Moral: When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut!

I don't take mine out religiously but take it out regularly especially with the amount of salt they use here in Utah. Haven't had it in since all summer with the excpetion of one weekend. When they are in they are knee killers and I always back up to my garage door and I would imagine it would leave a nice hole in the door if I get a bit to close. It just hangs out in my back seat when not in use.

^ Yep, they know how to find knees.

I Have light that fits in the reciever that I'm going to start using again. It also keeps the 4-way flat pigtail clean and protected. Sounds like most of you guys have been playing it pretty smart.

I couldn't believe how much crap I had to do get that thing to move.

I traded my truck in this week and the hitch had been in there since winter so yep it went with the truck. I have to get a new hitch for the new truck and with my locking toneau cover will just keep it in there. The weird thing is i've had my hitch in longer before with no problem and i painted it up really nice this last time and it rusted tight.

I spend money i don't have, on parts i don't need, to impress people i don't know.

I know what you mean. I was trying to get one out of my dads truck. I tried to hook the two trucks together and pull and is still didn't work (later I realized how stupid that was, it could have easily broke loose and fly at mine and leave a nice dent). Needless to say, I just went out and bought a new reciever.

Best trick I've found is hook up to something solid, have the truck in 4L..put some pressure on it, NO jerking, and have a buddy hit it on the side with a sledge. You have to have a fair bit of power to it, when I did it I had the tires starting to spin a bit, and had to back off. You can feel it when he hits the hitch, it'll move a couple inches at a time, when it moves let go of the gas just in case it decides to come out in 1 shot.

PS: Do this at your own risk, it is very dangerous if the hitch decides to fly out.

If it ain't broke,
change stuff till it is.

Now, it is empty with a plastic plug in it.

Easy fix for them rusted in units...

Pull an empty tow dolly around for about half an hour on the highway.. (PIN IN!!!!) While it's jiggling around and smacking the back of your truck back and forth, it knocks all the rust loose.

Tried this with the wifes van when we went to sell it. Never did get it out.

In my truck it is not a problem. I always am towing something different. Thing never stays in for more that about a week. I've had to knock rust out to get the thing in. I guess one of those plastic caps would be the trick.
