Most of the land in our area is privately owned, and some of
these landowners have kindly allowed us to put snowmobile
trails across there property. This permission is for access to
the marked trail only! Snowmobiling anywhere else on their
property is a violation of the law. You can be sued for
trespassing and damages by the property owner.

yep, thats why you see more and more stay on trail signs.

look at some older maps if you have any. You can see how some changed over the years. Some from just changing land owners, that don't want a trail. Then there are the ones sick of people not respecting their property.

Yup, unless you know that you're on public land

STAY ON THE TRAILS

Irresponsible riders also get trails closed, the land that snowmobile trails are on is many times either leased or "borrowed" from private land owners so that we can all enjoy the trail. But when people continually go off the trail and into peoples yards it pisses them off. Land owners can and do shut down trail systems.

Oh I know. Just had our landowner meeting. Getting real sick of kissing A$$ and putting in snow fence to contain sledders.

The trails have drastically changed around here. Don't know if that was the reason or not, but it's no good. There are so many tracks that go into the fields, it's pathetic. People (not all of them) would rather go across a field then take the extra 10 seconds to go all the way to the end, then turn with the trail. It pi$$es me off when I see that.

I moved to Wisconsin almost 2 years ago from Minnesota. This was the biggest change that I noticed about snowmobiling here. In Minnesota we had more freedom to ride off trail. I never heard from any landowners in Minn that they did not want sledders riding off trail.

It is their land and I respect that, so therefore, I stay on the trails, but still a huge difference for me.

This isnt a big problem in my area but it is definitely getting worse.
When i see tracks darting off and cutting through the middle of a field, i just wonder why.

one thing i never understand is why does it really matter much if you go a couple feet off the trail its not like your tearing up there dirt,, your riding over it by about 4 inches of snow

Yup, I help my snowmobile club mark over 150 miles of trails, and this was the biggest complaint from last year. And cutting the corners in fields, looks like we might have to put up snow fence this year in some spots. Please stay on the trails or they just might get closed!

How do you know what is under the snow? What happens if each rider takes a 4"+ cut, guess how far off the trail they are. Do you know how much we pay for crop damage cause someone ventures off the marked area of the trail.

Crop damage is one of our most costly expenses.

Because there's farmers that plant "winter crops", that's why. I knew a farmer a few years back that was really pi$$ed about this. He asked "Do you think I pay less for the seed on the edge of the field than in the middle?" This was directed toward some of the others, and I could do nothing but agree with him. If people run aimlessly across fields ruining their crops, that is making them loose money. It is a privilege, not a right to use their land, people should be thankful for that and think wisely when riding on private property.

Would you want people leaving the trail and run over all your stuff? Think about that.

I stand behind the "LAND OWNER" 100%.

Usually it only takes common sense to understand the logic. Shoot, did I say common sense.

It only takes 1 bad tomato in the group, to ruin it for the whole group.

Generally, we don't miss anything til it is gone. If a Land Owner cuts off the trail, it is his right to do so. Let the fault lie where it belongs! Abuse of PRIVILEGES!

This will be the my third year in a snowmobile club. If the people would go to one club meeting or a trail signing , they might think about not going off the marked trail. A lot of people do not know how much work goes to a trail system. This does not mean just in the winter, but year around. REMEMBER IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO RIDE ON PRIVATE PROPERTY. Art

It is not only "winter crops" that suffer. The ice base of a trail also kills alfalfa with ease. Most farmers around here try and route the trail around fields using the lowest areas possible. This leaves them with less damage. Others can't do that.

We have to respect the landowners! They make our sport possible.

Find the line between respect and fear....then flirt with it
