Buying 10-15 gallons this week!
It seems that Sherwin Williams Duration paint is rated best and I can get it for the "bargain" price of $42 a gallon. Valspar Ultra Premium seems to be rated second best and is $23 a gallon.
Any of you experienced at this? Painting my house and fence.

I'd go for the cheaper stuff, at almost half the price of the other stuff, rated second place is still close enough to first in my book.

I work and True Value and we sell out own brand called WeatherAll, lifetime warranty and depending on the sheen you choose its around 24 bucks a gallon, have had quite a few people come in and tell us they love it. I would go for the cheaper stuff as well.

The prep work is what will be the deciding factor. Screw that up and no paint will look good. Cause it will be peeling in no time.
I'd NEVER pay $40 a gal.

The paint is pretty solid in most spots. Just light peeling in very few areas. Erick must love this thread, he has been logged into it all day or something haha I posted on a paint forum for the heck of it to see what the majority said http://www.diychatroom.com/f4/sw-duratio...post333669

I'm a painter and do alot of exterior painting. Up here we use either Sherwin Williams or mostly True Value. Either are good. I would go with the Valspar just because it's alot cheaper. The biggest thing is the primer. Zinner makes a great exterior primer. Make sure you prime every litle spot thats peeling and it will look and hold alot better. 2 coats of paint on the primer.

I've used Sherwin paint a lot at a past job and truthfully, I wouldn't put it on anything I own. I put Mautz on my house and I love it. Also did a big part of the interior with it. But now that Sherwin bought out Mautz and basically dropped their name, I use Behr from Home Depot. Also a very good paint. A lot of the store brands (Ace Hardware, True Value) are actually very good also. I've also had very good results with the higher line of the Ace brand. Don't just get the cheapest, you'll regret it in the future. Like said before, your base makes all the difference in the world, crappy base, crappy top coat. Good base, good looking top coat.

I work at home depot in the paint dept. BEHR ultra is the way to go. Paint and primer in one. Used it on my house and it turned out fantastic.
I also dissagree with using cheaper paint for the same outcome. You get what you pay for.

I painted for 2 years as a commercial painter for a college job and certain builders like a different paint but for the most part we use Sherwin Williams duration for exteriors. It's an excellent product. We spray our exteriors which I'm sure you will roll or brush your exterior. The biggest thing I can recommend is prepping with plastic and paper. I would also try and find someone who might be considered a contractor and get the paint at half the price. I'm pretty positive it doesn't cost us more than $20 bucks a gallon.
Here is something to consider also. A lot of commercial painters have extra gallons of paint laying around. Sometimes a customer changes their mind on the color of paint they want after its been mixed and so that extra paint can't be returned. Thats a lot of paint for some houses. We usually just take the paint back to the shop and stick it in a store room and end up donating it to Habitat for Humanity once it piles up or people fail to come buy the paint. Call around and see if any local painters in your area do the same. You may find a color you like for half the price. Commercial painters don't like to use cheap paint because it can reflect poorly on them too. Just a thought

^ That behr ultra is interior paint only right? Anyways that behr paint and primer just screwed me on my new dining room the other day. Took 4 coats to cover a wall with some crap that was painted on it and took 2-3 coats on a new drywall wall. Was not impressed.
You should see what they say about behr on the professional painters forum. Behr even got on the forum and go torn apart, it was a good read haha.

Ended up buying 11 gallons of Sherwin Williams Duration today. The best most expensive paint there is. Bad part is I am going to need another 1-2 gallons of white. I didn't know my eves were white too. Damn.

You won't get much of a break. It is raining/snowing from eastern WI back to the Dakotas. After that is cold. We are looking at 42 degrees for Monday.

I will not paint at all before paint real fast. I would rather replace a few boards next year than watch $600+ in paint peel off.

My house was painted with Sherwin Williams Duration almost 10 years ago, and there's only one spot that needs any sort of touch up.. That is where the snow from my snowblower hit the stucco fascia over my stone foundation.

You can always hope for a week of Indian summer. I wouldn't want my $600 to fall off either!
Your bow season starts soon right? Just another arguement for waiting until spring to paint.

I'd go with the Duration. I did my whole house (cedar shakes/trim) with Behr 5 years ago, and it's in bad shape on the South and West sides of my house. The North side is fairing better, but still has some issues. I have been asking every painter I work with about exterior finishes, and it seems like the majority prefer duration. The low-bid guys will always use whatever is cheapest, but when you ask what they use on their own home, they usually agree that Duration is good stuff.
The Behr siding and deck stain (solid color, not actually a true paint) has a 15 year warranty, but I don't even want to go through the hassle involved since I don't want to put it back on. Seriously- painting that much area above grade is one thing, having to touch up a lot of it and prep a lot of it in just 5 years is a huge hassle. I would no sooner cheap out on paint quality than I would on gas quality for a sled. (to use sledder terms)
