I have what I think to be a 1985 (by the tag on the side of the sled) Indy 400. My question is I put it in the garage waiting to get to it for this winter and noticed a large oil spot under it. I removed the air box before storing it. Is the 2-cycle oil the only oil in the machine and if so where is it leaking????

Check the oil bottle and the lines feeding the carbs. It's possible you have a crack in the bottle, or some dry rotted oil lines going to the carbs. I'd start there. That should be the only oil in the sled.

Usually there's oil in the chaincase, thats a common place to have a leak as well

If the oil lines are old it's probably a cracked line from the oil tank to the oil pump. Great little sleds, I've got an 86 indy400 and love it.

When hell freezes over I'll ride there too!!

I would check the chain case, and chain case seal as I have seen 400's including my 91 400 with a broken chain case. I resolved mine as a temp fix with gear grease and that worked short term. But definatly check it out before killing the poor thing :)
Just my 0.2

if the side of the sled says 85, then it is actually considered 86.

x3 for chaincase!

Mine went last year because I didn't think that was where it was leaking. FIX IT! Pain in the ass if you don't.

Thanks for all the input. I will check the chain case and go from there. I am hoping to get some use out of this machine, picked it up cheap, it's in great shape, starts but won,t keep running. Will tune it up clean the carbs replace all fuel lines and plugs......etc.

Thanks again hope to upload a picture soon.
