Ok this is weird, I've started my zl every week this summer, now I went to start it yesterday and it idled incredibly low sub 200 rpms(procedes to get lower and lower) then just shuts off, when the week before it was idling normally. I noticed alot of smoke, what should I do? What's wrong with the engine?
I appreciate the help,
Dakota

It might just be loaded up from all the idling
likely needs a good run to burn off all the fuel and oil in the crankcase

Nope, pretty dry. I'm changing plugs, and sending seafoam through it before the season. Its last seasons gas, put stabil in it though.

Lately I havn't had good luck with stabil red. SO I have been using the blue/green ethanol formula. WE'll have to see how that works.

Syphon that old stale fuel out of it!! Stabil sucks and doesn't do nearly s good a job as Seafoam, however, you'll be adding Seafoam to degraded fuel and that's not good. Do the sled a favor and just get rid of that tank of fuel. Then run it for a bit getting it good and warmed up. Don't just let it sit and idle, but vary the rpm's a bit. New plugs and new fuel should make a difference.

Not so sure about seafoam and ethanol. I have seen alot of carbs lately with etched throats and corrision/pits on them. Owners swear by sea foam.

Have someone hold up the rear of the sled or use a track stand so you can run the track and get the motor warmed up really good to burn off exess gas and oil. The plugs might have fouled out if you didn't run it very much when you start it weekly. When I start my dads and my sled up I usually try to run the track so they don't get loaded up and foul the plugs

How long should I run it for to get it warmed up? At what rpm? My clutch engages at around 4 k.

Generally until the heat exchangers are warm, thats a good sign of the engine being close to if not at operating temperature. Run the sled as if you were driving it. Put it on a stand however, there are some horror stories with tracks letting loose or something going wrong and people getting seriously injured. Anyways, rev the sled, don't sit there and hold it to the bar, but rev it well over 4,000 rpms.

let it run and put your hand under the exhaust outlet. keep the rpm's up to about 2500-3000. when you feel the exhaust start to warm up, your motor is getting warm. let it run a little longer, but make sure your temp light doesnt come on(dont over run it). its kind of a learned process,to feel the heat, not too much heat. running a sled and shutting it off without reaching operating temp,is asking for trouble.

Before I read further into this as anyone thought of a really easy possibility? Its getting close to winter. Mice, rats, squirrels, chjipmunks are looking for a place to sleep. Sure running it and holding it wqide open is a great idea if you wanna take a chance. Check some stuff out first I say. Only takes a day for a chipmunk to fill up your air box with little goodies. I wouldnt just run it and hope for the best. Check some stuff out. Maybe even the exhaust is plugged up? I dunno but all these solutions sound like a great way to blow it up for a simple taking off your airbox solution.
Thats my opinion. Blew up my MXZ in a matter of like 30-45 minutes because I thought "Hey one ride b4 cleaning the carbs will be fine" Well...it wasnt.
And I dont need negative feed back. Any opinions are fine so dont make fun of mine.
If you cant fix it with duct tape, tylnol, or band aids your screwed.

It's been stored inside, but I'll take a look at it tonight. I'll also make a video just to make sure I was clear enough.
So check: The airbox, Then take the exaust pipe off, then make sure it's clear?

I like to put duct tape over my air box intake (I store the foam in the house) and the exhaust outlet. I know it is a bit of a pain to take it off each week but that way I just inspect the tape to determine if vermin have tried to make a next.
You can pull the exhaust and shake to see if there is anything inside. I saw or heard somewhere that some people have made small fires and put the exhaust into it to burn out the nest. Never had to do that so I can't comment if it works or not. I guess I would be concerned about overheating the exhaust.
Find the line between respect and fear....then flirt with it

Yep and while you have the airbgox off you can check the carbs either by going through the airbox and just feel or if your airbox is a solid one like a ski-doo u will have to take it off.
