Alright, so I have 1999 Ford Explorer 4x4 4 door. It has a sunroof, new tranny, 4.0 sohc, and a brushguard. What else should I do to it. I wont be able to do anything until next year after I sell my sled, but I want to start planning.

This is what I have planned:

2" suspension lift
30.5" tires
2 6" subs
CD Player wired into a rear mounted DVD player ( so sound will play from the dvd player when you watch it, and you have to shut off the cd player when using the dvd player. Dvd player will be on the center console, but in the back.

Other than that, I don't know what else to do. I was thinking of maybe getting a snow plow to have a job off to the side not this winter, but next winter, to help support my addiction to sledding.

if its a 99 you should be able to clear 31" tires with no problem.

I know, but I still want to do the lift anyways, just for more overall clearance. I don't plan on doing any hardcore mudding or anything with it, maybe just going down trails and stuff every now and then.

How about another cover for your off road lights? LOL..

Some fender Flare on there might look nice with some bigger tires. What about some skid plates? Do you have skid plates on it? A nice built in GPS would be sweet too. Or a cold air can and a dual exhaust? There are tons of things you could do! Nice looking truck now though!

I was thinking about doing some kind of exhaust, but at the same time, I don't want that ricer sound ( Sadly, it's the 4.0, not the 5.0 ). I was thinking maybe some small fender flares as well. Im taking out both fog lights, and getting new ones with an adjuster switch under the dash. I may end up doing some slight porting or something to the intake, and I plan on getting a new air filter because the one thats on it is dirty as all hell ( I'm not one of those people that thing a new air filter will give me 20hp, I just know a dirty filter will rob me of my performance ). I like the VorTrac interco tire. I dont want something to meaty, because it will just end up getting chewed up by the road in a few thousand miles and I'll have to buy new ones.

Installing a plow on a truck that old is probably not the best idea, unless you plan on replacing every u-joint, ball joint, tie rod, etc on it before hand, otherwise you'll be changing them all after...

If you're putting on taller tires, you may want to change the gear ratio so that you don't lose all your acceleration.

I planned on it. I was thinking 3.90 gears over the stock 3.83.

I am yet to see a single pre-2000 Jeep make it past 150,000 miles without losing a tranny. Honestly, I have not seen ONE. My parents have owned 6 of them, and between all of my friends, they have owned a good 10-15. All of them with a tranny problem sometime in their lives.

2" suspension lift
30.5" tires

If you're set on doing a lift, especially one that small, I would recommend doing a body lift over a suspension lift. Xploders are body on frame, and also have an independent front suspension. IFS tends to be pricey to lift, and a body lift will allow your driveline angles to remain at the stock settings. You will eliminate any alignment issues, weird vibrations and premature suspension joint and u-joint failures that way.

I was thinking of maybe getting a snow plow to have a job off to the side not this winter, but next winter, to help support my addiction to sledding.

If you plan on plowing your driveway once every few weeks, then yeah, go for the plow. If you want to try and make money plowing, you need a different rig. The front suspension, frame, and tranny on that truck are no where near strong enough to support constant snow plowing.
Quote originally posted by sledcrusher

I may end up doing some slight porting or something to the intake

Might want to double check that intake. It's a cross-over plastic intake. I may be wrong, but I don't think plastic takes too well to porting.

I planned on it. I was thinking 3.90 gears over the stock 3.83.

You'll probably want to go 4.10's minimum. My '01 Ranger had the 4.0L SOHC, and came with 31" tires stock (and a factory 2" suspension lift). It also came stock with a 4.10 gear ratio. Even then, that engine struggled a bit to get those tires rolling. Explorers also weigh more than Rangers do. You will destroy your gas mileage though.

Also, the stock brakes do not do a very good job of hauling down big heavy tires. They suck at it, actually. Consider getting better brakes if you go with a bigger tire.

Don't forget to put the same gear ratio in the front diff.

Sean, not trying to start anything, but let me see if I understand this correctly... You say you are going to mod this explorer next year after you sell your sled, a sled that you have not even bought yet, and won't be able to buy until you sell a truck that you haven't sold yet?
