I got my 02 edge 800 and i just got a new bottom and and top and and new cylinders ect. What is the best way to break it in? Should i put oil in the gas so the mix is richer? Should i run it like i stole it and set the rings or should i baby it? At the same time i have to burp the system. So i know i should lift the front end then fill through the thermostat. Can i just use regular coolant or a 50/50 mix? And anyone know how much it takes to fill it?

I would add a little oil in the first tank of gas. This helps break in and aslo prevents failure if the oil pump isnt working.
first 200-500 miles take it a little easier
50/50 mixed coolant, new thermostat (or just remove it like I did)

It'll take about a gallon of 50-50 mix to fill the engine and then a little more for when your filling the rest of it, so if you mix your own a 1 gallon jug would be lots.

Put some oil in the gas. Fill the oil tank so you can tell if the oil injection is working. On your first ride drive it for a mile or two stop check the fluids. If everything is ok drive it like normal.

Break it in like you ride it, except for LONG WOT pulls. you're engine needs a lot of rpm variation and short WOT bursts to properly break in.

This is for 4-stroke motorcycles but the break in process still applies to sleds engines.

Here's one from a recent article. It applies to new sleds but "all the same" for the top end.

AWESOME article!!! I have done this on more than 1 vehicle and completely agree with this.
Read the ENTIRE article a few times. It explains what to do and WHY. And it explains what happens if you don't.
The "ride it like you stole it" and "go easy for a while" theories are wrong. Read this article to find out why.

I just drive it like normal. The only thing that needs to break in are the rings and I feel they seat the first 5min. of run time. Never had a problem doing this on a 2 stroke. Roller bearings don't need a break in in my opinion.

Does that article also pertain to two strokes- in other words, whenever i rebuild a two stroke sled, should i pound it like the article says?

I have always heard that you should drive it like you are normally going to drive it and of course let the snowmobile properly warm up before putting a load on the engine. Adding extra oil doesn't hurt either for the first couple hundred miles.

Yes it applies to everything that has a piston and rings. 2 or 4 stroke.
It does not say "pound it". Read it again. It explains EXACTLY how to break in an engine and WHY.
He provides evidence to support his theory.

I have a friend who had an Indy that the oil injection went out and blew his motor up. Spent all summer rebuilding her. Don't know why it took so long, but this is coming from a family that continually is rushing to get corn in before they start planting. He babied her for about 500 miles I think he said. It may have been like 250. Anyways I didn't have a working sled they are out on the trail I get a call and his sled blew up again. This was just right when he thought his sled was ready to finally be able to go full throttle. Needless to say I picked him up, and I don't think he took the sled apart again yet to rebuild her. I have a friend who bought a brand new 07 Crossfire 6 last year, and the dealer told him to open the throttle up like this article. He said he can tell a difference in how this sled broke in compared to how the original owner of his 440 broke it in. If I ever have to break something in I'll for sure go with this method and try my hardest to resist the urge to just fire it up before my toys are ready for their first ride.
