Well, I have decided that I am going to go through my 99 XCR 800 (under the hood) thoroughly before the snow starts flying. It has almost 7000 miles on it so it is due time. I would like to know what things I should be looking for that are common issues. I have already noticed the clutch side motor mount or strap is cracked and needs to be replaced. I am going to yank the whole engine. While I have the engine out, what are some things that are easy to take care of while it is out? Just looking for some direction...
Thanks!

wouldnt hurt to put bearings and seal kit in water pump since you have it out. with that many miles i would do a compression test just to see where the engine is at. if you are taking it out it might be a good time for a rering?

Go through the carbs, if you haven't done that all ready, check the reed pedals, with that many miles on it, and a heavy does of WOT, those pedals have to be a bit worn out!!

Madcow, do you think a rering is all that would be needed? or would a whole top end rebuild be in order?

Well, I got everything unhooked and pulled the engine with no problems. Couldn't help but notice lots of red like dust all over the belly pan. Looks like it may have been coming from the clutch. Is this bad? I also would like to know where to get a good replacement motor strap/mount. I have heard that they were bad quality in the earlier years. I looked on ebay where there are lots of them but I have no idea what ones would fit mine. Are they all interchangable for the most part, like a 98 or 97 XCR, etc? One more thing - The cylinders look near perfect, I still want to know how much I should do. If I should just do a rering, or a whole top end rebuild. I PM'd you madcow but haven't heard anything.

polaris1man, what am I looking for with the pedals? My first time ever seeing these things. Look fine to me... but again, I don't know what the heck I am looking for.
