I'm in the market for a new sled. This will be my 4th season riding. My current sled is an 03 Polaris XCSP Edge 600 and want to try something new.
I've narrowed my decision down to either the 2010 Dragon Switchback 600 or Dragon Shorttrack 600. I ride in Northern NH and want a good general all around sled. I also like to ride a lot of miles and want to get more into off trail riding this year.
Your thoughts?
Thanks
Eric

I would go with the switchback. The 136" would be perfect for me where I ride here in maine. I'm sure it would suit you well in NH. I would love to pick up a leftover 2010 next year but don't know if I will be able to afford it

longer track, smoother ride, IMO. i'd go with the 136
2003 Edge-X 800
Vforce 3 reeds, Powermadd Boost bottle, updated c.d.i. slp powder pro's, 1.25 predator track, fox racing clicker rear, rydefx center and skis, 1 in handle bar riser, specialty x can. 11.5 in cobra yellow tint windshield, and a sportech yellow tint lightshield.

I'd go with the switchy but I'd highly recommend the 800. I've got both and it's night and day power difference. Well worth the extra dough. My 800 is upgraded to an 1.5" ripsaw and it does this like nothing.... They're both shorty's but either way, I'd go 800. The reason I didn't go 136" in 09' is cause I'm not a huge fan of the air 2.0's but now you can have the 136" with walker evans for no extra cash. My .02

Yep, id definitley get a Switchback. All we have are 121s which do good, so far i havent gotten stuck at all, but my 500 really fights the deep powder. It just doesnt have enough flotation along with the crappy stock track, but it gets the job done. When i get my own sled i really want a switchback so i have the extra track for when i need it. Plus our XLT Touring has a longer track, not sure if its a 136, but it rides better then our 121s.

Thanks for the feedback thus far. Each year I've have thought of picking up a new sled but never pull the trigger. I've ridden a ton of different sleds from my riding buddies or at snowshow events. I always seem to really like the Polaris sleds though.
I am curious how different the Dragon with handle compared to my XCSP? My riding buddies both have new XP's, one has an etec the other the 800 and I find them to be very darty. The few Dragons I've riddin at snow shows seem to be much more planted. Also I have to admit I love the look of the new flat red and the longer tracked sleds!
As far as the 800 compared to a 600. I prefer the 600's for a few reasons. I feel me personally, can ride the 600's to their total potential through corners etc. where as the 800 is more of a point and shoot type of deal. When I've ridden the two xps (etec 600 vs 800x) I much prefer the 600. But that's just me I guess :) And I feel I ride fairly agressively too.

switchback all the way. espeacilly a dragon. you dont even notice the 15 more inches on the trail, but you get flotation off trail. im guessing it has a .25 bigger lug wich is a plus.
I used to have a 06 switchback 600 with a can, but needed a better powder sled, because id never be caught dead on a trail.
so i went to a 06 RMK 700, with mbrp can.
just got it a week ago, cant wait to ride!
but congrats on buying a sled!
^^^
never mind about that.
here it goes.
Id certainly go with the switchback. You dont even notice the longer track on trail and helps alot in the deep pow! Also is the #1 choice for bumpy trail riders. Im not sure, but i also think it has a bit bigger lug witch is nice. Thats only my opinion tho, i used to own a switchback, 06 600 not a dragon, and it had a long track (144), but it had lots of power, reached high speeds and handled the pow pretty good.

Man, you can handle the 8...you have to understand how easy it is to steer and control this 09'on up front end. It's effortless. I'd at least ride one first or you may regret it but what do I know?

I hear you on the 800. The other reason is I don't want to worry about the 800 motor issues of 09. I know they most likely have fixed the issue, but my 600 has been bulletproof with over 6200 miles and not one single problem. But....if I get a chance to try out an 800, I'm certainly not going to pass it up!

Well you'll obviously have the chance at an 800 if your buying new. Don't get me wrong bro, you'll have a blast on either but the it sounds like you get some deep snow where your at. I took my 600 out last year when we had some deep, but heavy snow, and coming off a jump landing in powder, you could feel it bog the motor. Maybe that's cause I'm used to the burlyness of my 8 though. Again, you can't make a bad choice. What do you weigh? That could be a factor too. I weigh like 205

Eric
i was in the same boat as you. I live in S NH and currently own an 03 600Egde.
I was going to buy the 600 Switchback Dragon when i found a sweet deal on an 07 600IQ CFInew and still in the crate.
my next sled will be a switchback for sure. When the wife is board with the edge i can hand down the IQ and get me my Dragon.
were are doing the majority of your riding?

Here's the latest on my sled purchase. After getting some quotes from a few dealers on a new 2010 Dragon 600 Switchbacks. All I can say is DAMN, these things are expensive!!! I realize the cost of a new sled but when you add the price of studs, a rear bag, hand guards, etc, not to mention insurance for a new sled, the price goes up even higher!
I am honestly having a tough time forking over the cash. I mean is the Dragon 600 Switchback really worth over 10 grand??? Even with a good trade in deal on my 03 Edge 600 ($2300), I'm still wondering if it will ride $8500 better than my Edge??? And believe me I love sledding but these things loss their value faster than almost anything. I know I could look for a left over but I really like the 2010 flat red. simply awesome!!!
Decisions....Decisions.....
Greg D. I ride almost 100% in Pittsburg NH, once I rode in Pittsburg, nothing else compares!

Eric,
3A Motor Sports in Chelmsford has a 09 switchback on there show room floor.
Personaly i am not a huge fan of this dealer, but if the price is right.....
Also check with HK power, i know they had an 09 Switchback on there floor 2 weeks ago when i bought my new IQ. They gave a pretty good trade on the wifes 550f touring sled.
I agree that Pitts is the best. i started riding up there a few yrs ago. A lot of people tell me they don't like to go up there because you have to ride south to get anywhere. Personaly i love it.

Thanks for the tips Greg. I won't purchase from a MA dealer because I'll have to pay the dreaded MA tax.
I did see that Switchback though at Route 3A. At this point I think I will keep my XCSP and keep my eye out for a deal on a 2010. Even if I have to wait until next year. Who know though I am expecting a bonus at years end :)
As far as riding south in Pittsburg to get anywhere. That's a new one as I haven't heard anyone say that. The only negative for Pittsburg is it's a 5-6 yr drive from my house!!

5/6 Hrs? were are located?
i live in Pelham and make it in 4 to 41/2 hrs. I am headed up in 3 weeks for a 4 day hunt. hope to do it in less than 4 without the trailer in tow.

by the way. no sales tax if you are a NH resident. you just need to prove that you live there year round.

switchback for sure. i've been told the 136 track is a much better ride than a 121. when i'm in the market in a couple of years i will be testing this out. why not try a Rush though? i've been reading reviews in all of the magazines i get and the ride is supposedly other worldly.
