ramps and chips are unforgiving, especially when you are rotating a sled. Major Props for trying, and hope he makes it out ok and rides again.

He is currently communicating using a pen and paper, because his diaphragm is still crushed, and he can't talk.

hi guys I am on 3 other sites making up dates on darryl. I was there when he crashed and he has touched my life I just want to help him any way i can . this is what i can do for now. latest newsHi all again, well good day for darryl today, feeling better with tube removed from his throat. his lungs are a lot stronger and first day they didn't have to give him a unit of blood, so that means bleeding slowed or stop in lungs. he got his teeth all brushed and feels a lot better. oh ya he likes the fake boob under his head, gives him relief from headaches, doesn't everyone feel better with boob against their head!!!! hahahah darryl laughed about it anyways. well hopefully he has a better night last night was a little hard and lots of dreams for him cause of the drugs so will post more tomorrow, still no surgery well they are still talking about next week so we shall see as it happins.

D-Rail Update...AWESOME STUFF!
October 20, 2009
Hope you had a GOOD DAY, today !!!!????!!!!!!
It has been a roller coaster ride of a day!!!! Darryl has worked so hard throughout today, trying to cough up the secretions from his lungs. Sometimes I have to leave the room because it is too painful to watch him struggle with it all. I had to let the professionals (nurses and the respiratory staff) handle it and walk out with my raw emotions so I didn't impact all that Darryl was trying to do. He continues to run a fever and we were told earlier that they wanted him to be without a temp for minimum of 24-48 hours in order to do the surgery tomorrow.
There were lots of GOOD THINGS that happened today:
(1) they took out the right lung drainage tube!!! YAHOO!!! The secretions were so nominal that they did that procedure first thing this morning.
(2) The bacterial cultures came back negative
(3) He had all kinds of bowel activity, today!!!!!! ALLELUIA!!! First, since his accident.
(4) The Physiotherapist was in late this afternoon and had a GREAT session with Darryl. He is mentally ready to get at rehab once they stabilize his back.
(5) He had ultrasound work done today, determining he has no blood clots!!! Thank-you ,Lord for another good piece of news
(6) And here is the HAPPY DANCE NEWS, are you ready for it???????
THEY ARE GOING AHEAD WITH HIS SURGERY TOMORROW AT 8:00am WITH THE FINEST ANESTHESIOLOGIST AND THE FINEST ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON IN NORTH AMERICA !!!! God has the BEST TEAM lined up for Darryl's surgery!!! We are all beside ourselves with JOY and GRATEFUL HEARTS !!!!! The ICU medical have determined that the fever Darryl has been running the last couple of days has been as a result of neurological damage. Neurons giving the body the wrong messages. SO WE ARE GOOD TO GO!!!! YAHOO!!!!!!!
We are counting on your prayers especially NOW, that God would guide the surgeon's hands tomorrow and give the entire OR team peace, strength, and wisdom that transcends all our understanding to perform each of their responsibilities for this particular surgery (it could take up to 8 hours to perform). That the team would be filled with Your love for our son, Darryl, and have the spirit of cooperation amongst them to do their very best. Prepare Darryl in everyway possible for this surgery, his mind, body, and spirit, Lord Jesus. May you be revealed to us God, through what you are about to accomplish in and through the hands, hearts and minds of the OR Team and those who are praying for our beloved Darryl !!! I personally give you the Praise and the Glory in all that will take place in his surgery, through Jesus Christ, your Son. AMEN!!!!!
Good night to you all!!!!! We look forward to giving all of you an update tomorrow!!!!! We have much to be grateful for!!!!!!
with much love,
Jamie, Barb, Curtis (Becky), and especially Darryl

E-mail from the family....
I hope I am able to get this out to you quickly and do an add on update later.
We have not seen Darryl as yet but he was in good spirits going into the surgery. Even with the initial sedation going we were sharing some laughs. He told us he would be streaking in the OR because he knew he would be buck naked during the operation!!!!! I told him this is his own personal Boston Marathon and he agreed !!!! We as a family prayed together before he went in and I know it did us all good. He was very ready in his mind, spirit and body.
Dr. Mansfield, the Orthopedic surgeon, has already been in to see us. The surgery went very well. He informed us the spinal cord was completely severed but the good news is that there was no pooling of spinal fluid which is excellent for his upper quarter of his body. Dr. Chow has just closed up Darryl's back and they are saying now we can him in an hour.
Dr.Chow just came in to reassure us that everything went well.
Just knew a few of you might be on pins and needles to hear the news. I'll give you an update later.
Thanks again for all your love and support.
With much love and appreciation,

I pray for him.I don't know if he will ever feel his legs with the severed cord. but he is alive and he is so young. I am not a doctor and hopefully he can live a life with out pain. Rajveer S Ahuja guess a bunch of you heard the nurses had darryl up into a bed/chair to get him moving around. Was not there for that and according to Jamie was real hard for darryl but did push throught it like a trooper and faced up to the pain and did wicked. slowly it will get easier. so big day for him, he is also breathing on his own but still has the tube in his throat, they have reduced the size in the afternoon and now can talk and is much easier to understand so thats huge for him and the family to communicate with each other rather then playing pictionary hahahah. Im sorry to say i had to leave the family today
(painfully hard)and head across the boarder but will pretty be in touch with them about 100 times a day so try to pass on the good news as i get it. thanks again everyone for your support.

Recent e-mail from his family:
To our AMAZING GLOBAL SUPPORT Team !!!!!
Our prayers are being answered, my dear family and friends!!!!! THANK-YOU, LORD!!!!! YAHOOO!!!!
Darryl's healing so tremendously and even the medical staff are amazed . Our boy accomplished lots in last 24 hours and we are all so proud of him!!!! He sat up in his bed several times and all his blood pressure readings were great. He did work with the physiotherapist getting up on his feet to getting into a chair !!! THAT WAS HARD WORK !!!!!!! He told us later he thought the chair was built for a very short person!!!!! The occupational therapist dropped by to do some work with him as well. Amongst everything else going on they fit in 3 chest xrays. They took out his large tracheal tube and put in a much smaller one. THIS IS TERRIFIC because he is off the ventilator and on the trac mask. He is totally BREATHING on his OWN!!!! YAHOOO!!!! HE CAN ALSO TALK NOW and the first words I heard my son speak was, "I LOVE YOU.MOM!!" The flood gate of tears were released and they just kept rolling down my face. To hear those words spoken from Darryl meant the world to me !!!!!! With the arrival of each family member he declared his love to Gran, Curtis, Becky and most importantly to Jamie. We all had about the same reaction !!!!! MY GOODNESS, OH, THE JOY IN LIFE, IN THE SMALL STUFF!!!! They truly are the treasures of our hearts!!!!
He is back on the feeding tube and his stomach is handling that well. They might put him on a soft diet tomorrow which will include a much desired CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE( a real one - made from real ice cream)!!!! His nurse, Liz, is going to make sure he gets one. Darryl has been dreaming about that milkshake for a long while!!!!!!!! That is his carrot to relearning how to swallow liquids and the soft food with a smaller trach in his trachial passage. This trach tube will come out in the near future but they will want something left in his air passage until after his medivac transfer to .
The only step back is he has some secretion built up into his left lung so they put a drain tube back in it.
IT WAS AN AMAZING DAY and we can REJOICE & BE GLAD IN IT !!!!!!! WOW, that was truly a big day!!!!
We love you all lots,
Jamie, Barb, Curtis, Becky & the man of the day, D-Rail!!!!!!
