I bought a snowblower two years ago and it had probably only been used once(5hp tecumseh), so it was like brand new. Throughout last winter it seemed like it was loosing power. Now it can't even go through 6'' of snow in the lowest gear.

So I checked compresion on it and after five pulls it showed 65 psi. Then if I dump a little oil in the cylinder it jumps it up to 80 psi after five pulls. So I ordered a rebuild kit for it (piston rings and pin).

I also was looking at the carb on it and realized it didn't have an air filter. I thought maybe someone had taken it off before I got it and that caused it to wear out so fast, but I started lookin around and realized all snowblowers now come with no air filters on them. So they can just suck in the snow which would eat up the rings wouldn't it??? That doesn't seem right. The guy that i ordered the rebuild kit from said that snow won't hurt it a bit. But I don't believe him because snowmobile engines will burn up fast if they start sucking in snow. I think if it has a lot more power when we rebuild it I'm going to make a filter for it. What do you guys think?

I was also wondering if somebody has a 5hp tecumseh snowblower engine that you could check the compression on for me.

Thanks

i worked at a small engine shop for 3 years. no snowblowers have airfilters cuz there is no dust. snow shouldnt get into the carberator if it has the sheild on it. 65 psi sounds about right. check to see if both augers are spinning. to do so just have someone look at it while u are holding the levers. also spin the auger with your hand.WHEN IT IS OFF. just to see if the sheer pins are not broken. maybe even change your belt for the auger.

Your blower has a 4 stroke engine that is different than the 2 stroke that is in most snowmobiles.
On two strokes the ingestion of snow causes a different problem that a 4 stroke does. The snow enters directly on the piston and washes the lubricating oil from the piston and cylinder wall.
If any snow gets into your 4 stroke engine it would have to enter through the intake valve and into the combustion chamber. It wouldn't wash the oil from the cylinder wall like a 2 stroke would.
Snow blowers don't use a filter because it would plug with wet snow and choke the engine out. Even in very cold conditions the snow flying around the engine gets warm enough to thaw as it goes into the carburetor. The plugged filter a problem that is difficult to prevent so they just try to shield the intake well enough that only warm air without snow is drawn into the engine.
We have an old one that doesn't have a filter and has worked for fine years so I don't think running without a filter is a problem.

I had trouble with mine running bad last year also, turned out to be real bad gas, I filled it up with gas from a different place and it ran like a top again. Oh and mine doesn't have an air filter of any kind either, its a fairly new tecumseh 8hp engine, maybe 4yrs old.

The snowblower is an MTD Gold Series 24'' swath with a 5hp tecumseh engine on it. The shear pin is fine and the belts aren't slipping. I can pull the motor down to a stop in the lowest gear which is really really slow and not even taking a full swath. I would think that it should be able to go through about anything in the lowest gear.

I know the compression will go up some when you put oil in the cylinder but is it normal to go up 20psi?

Hey dodger you want to sell that john deere blower?

Maybe the carb is dirty, the one I have I can go through snow over the front end of the blower and it doesn't hardly even bog down.

When I got it the carb was plugged up pretty bad, It wouldn't run at all. We got it all cleaned up and running, but we could never get it to run decent so we got a carb kit for it. Not sure what was in the kit but it ran better after we put it in. I was adjusting on it last winter, and right now I've got it set to run about as lean as it can get and still run decent and thats were I get the most power out of it.

I don't know to much about carbs, is there something else that could be robbing its power.

No way,,,,Boy I need that puppy bad.....Its at my up north cabin where 200 inches of snow a year isn't unusual. Even if it don't snow, if the wind kicks up and overnight, I could have 1 foot drifts in the drive easy. The blower has a plastic cab on it to keep the cold stuff off you too.....

Have someone else run the blower for you and take a look to see if the snow is building up somewhere. Is the impeller able to take away all the snow the augers are sending to it? Another thing that really helps is putting a layer of turtle wax inside the discharge chute, it really helps out in the wet heavy snow, makes it slide through better.

Also have the carb adjusted and throw in a new set of sprark plugs just to be sure the engine is running at full speed.

Haha, Now that is what I should have!

The snow isn't building up anywhere and the impeller is able to keep up. I'm pretty sure its something to do with the motor. Here are some pics of the carb incase you wanted to see what it looks like.

The black screw on the side the carb is the low speed adjustment. The screw on the bottom side is the high speed adjustment. The only other adjustments are for changing idle speed.
I've messed with the high speed screw like I said in my other post and right now i've got it set pretty lean and thats where it seems to be putting out the most power. Any thing else that you know of that should be checked?

On monday I will be picking up the top end rebuild kit for it, and I will hopefully tear it down and get it rebuilt during the week.

ya, thats a hell of a deal. I've been searching around a little bit but haven't found one that cheap. I think if I was going to buy a new engine for though it i'd like to get a 7hp engine for it. Then I could throw some serious snow with it.

But its too late for that because I got the rebuilt kit yesterday which didn't come with gaskets so I have to wait another week for them. The rebuilt kit was $60 plus what ever the gaskets cost, so now of course after I got all this stuff i'm wondering if I should have got an engine with a little more power and been done with it. But the only 7hp engines that I found are at least $300.
