i just picked up a 2002 zr 800 cross country for 1800 do you think i got a good deal its pretty clean 5500miles, it has been caned clutched and geared. the only thing wrong with it is the adjustable rear shock needs to be rebuilt or replaced i don't know the nob on the handle bar spins freely. also the guy i bought from said he put a stud through the front heat exchanger and he said he fixed with some type of weld or something something different from jb weld i looked at it and looks fine and doesn't leak is it something i should worry about? so just give me your in put on this sled and opinions thanks

I think you got it for a straight price. For that many miles, the price of getting a shock rebuit or even new, and a tampered heat exchanger..I would of offered him 1400.

I had the 600 version of that sled. Don't even mess with the clicker shock. Just replace it with a regular shock. I had a huge issue with mine and most dealers just end up putting a regular shock on so.

I'm gonna have to agree, just go with a standard zr shock. The heat exchanger thing would worry me though.

should i take out the studs so i dont have to worry about putting another stud through it? and i will probably just put a regular zr shock in place of the adjustable one

It ended up costing me a couple of hundred bucks more than i should have and that didnt include the 5 hour drive up that I spent to get it back to the dealer who had supposedly fixed it.

what is the problem with the adjustable clicker shock that these sleds have? they dont last when you get the rebuilt and recharged?
and how much do you think i can just get a regular zr shock for

They need to be rebuilt a lot and are more expensive to do then a regular shock. Mine always sagged, even with a heavier set of shocks. I had one blow out after 10 miles of riding after being rebuilt. Thats when i decided enough was enough. Atleast that was my experience. Their troubles far outweigh the positive aspects.

ok i will probably just buy a used zr shock for it then. if anyone has one laying around let me know and i will buy it. and should i remove the studs since it has already damaged the heat exchanger from a stud ripping out? and i dont want to damage it anymore. it has the junk plastic backers, would it help if i put the aluminum ones on

It depends on what kind of riding you do. Lots of hardpack trail and ice they can be helpful but I chose to ride without them for piece of mind. It's all up to you. To prevent further damage I would take them out. My first sled had them but I havent put them on any sled since. Grant it I now ride mountain sleds and it isnt the same but I've had my experience of riding with and without. Just look at it this way, if you've never had them on your sled your probably not gonna know the difference. If the sled isn't handling the way you like, find a better set of studs and reinstall them. You will already have the holes and pattern made for you.
