well, i bought a modular helmet 3 years ago and its the best helmet ive ever worn. I ride in pretty cold temps. sometimes in the negatives and it never fogs up on me, and i dont even have a heated shield. Its a pure polaris modular helmet and i got it off of e-bay for like $150.

Hope this helps!

I have a motocross helmet and it works OK for what I do. When I do long trail rides in cold weather my goggles fog a little. A lot of people I ride with have modulars and love them. If I were you I would just spend the money on a nice modular and be done. You don't have to spend $450 on one, other brands make nice cheaper ones.

Check out the HJC modular helmets. I bought my full face last year and now with I would have sprung for the heated shield modular model. Their website list the modular at $210, or $270 with heated shield.

Id say youd be ok with a MX style helmet. My brother has a orange Polaris Snocross helmet, and its the only helmet he has. He carries 2-3 pairs of goggles and usually wears 2 facemasks but hes never had problems or complained of the cold. I made a mistake of buying a full face 2 years ago, so this winter im getting a open face. My atv helmet is so much nicer then my full face, but it doesnt have any insualtion so it can get cold. All i have for it is a single lens Scott goggle thats scratch resistant, and so far it hasnt fogged up riding around here unless we stop.

I've used the Polaris modular helmet with a heated shield for 4 years now. It works very well except when it gets to -15 or colder.
Seems like the shield cant keep up. The modular helmets also work great if you wear glasses. You dont need to slide your
glasses on after the helmet is on. This year I did buy a BRP BV2S. I dont know firsthand how well it works yet, but everyone
I talked to at the snowmobile show in Milwaukee was very happy with it. I paid too much at the show for it, so if you can get
one online for under $300, I would buy it. They say you dont need the heated shield, so it saves money right there. So replacing
a shield will be 30-40 instead of 100 + for a heated one.
