I was trying to change the track on my 91 Indy RXL and found that the new track with its 44mm paddles won't clear the tunnel around the drive axle. Is it possible to get a smaller diameter drive axle for more clearance or should I just forget using such a thick track on this old sled?

Typically drive wheels are replaced with bigger ones. I don't believe I've ever seen smaller than stock ones offered anywhere. Do you ride in the mountains?

Thats a 1.75" lug,I believe you have 9 tooth drivers now but you will need to swap them for at least 8 tooth drivers . A 1.5" lug is about as big as you can go on that sled without doing some more serious modifications.

Current Line Up

-06 IQ R 600HO

-95 XCR 600

yes you can buy new smaller drivers. i just did that to my 99 xc. had to go from 9 tooth to 7 tooth so that i could clear the 2" paddles without haveing to notch the track for the cooling tubes.

Is it possible that you can notch your track instead??

hope it helps, let me know if you would like pictures, i got lots from when i did my project.

The only chance to make it clear comfortably with the current drive wheel would be to cut every paddle down by a half inch as they all touch the cooler at the front. I'm not sure if it's safe to cut so much off the paddles, are they solid rubber or would they have some fibers inside? (Track is a Camoplast Cross Country)

ok, so im on the same page as you. when u talk cooler u are not talking about cooling tubes running through the tunnel?

i first put 1.5" ripsaw paddle track on it. had to notch ever paddle so the cooling tubes would fit.(pics below)

this is the track after it was notched. 2nd pic is of the cooling tubes that i had to notch

now if you are talking about the front cooler where you would have to cut every paddle all the way across .5" down then that is alot of work. as i see it u have 3 options

1) sell the track you have now and buy a 1.5"
2) cut every paddle down, but ruin a good track at the same time
3) pull the drive shaft out and replace the drivers with the next smaller (you can do this yourself if you have a press to use and press the old ones off, if u do this u might as well replace the bearings on the drive shaft too so that wont fail on you when you get it all back together. (can get drivers reasonable from the link below)

hope that helps

I'm evaluating my options here. There's not a lot of 136" tracks available here, at least not in such a low profile.
My old track is pretty rotten, half of the studs torn out and a few paddles broken.

If you do change your drivers, you may have to change your gear ratio.. I don't remember what your new upper/lower teeth would be, but if you do a search you might find that info on here..

'03 Indy 500 sks (Scumpman's Kicka** Snowmachine) extended skid/track to 136" from TracksUSA, AC roller clutch, Holtzman Tempaflow, clutched and geared, 2" risers, skidplate, old Pol rack.

you dont have to change the gears. when installing smaller drivers the gearing becomes lighter wich is good when installing a high lug track :)

I'm wondering, what's the difference between a single driver and a double driver on that site there?

single driver only has those little cogs on one side. a double drive as them on both sides.

these are double sided drivers. i thinkn double sided is the way to go. will help spin the track easier and reduce the change of track slipping. just my opinion though

Ok. I just had a look and an 8 tooth wheel would give me a reduced radius of 10mm and a 7 tooth would give 20mm.
How much clearance should I leave between the track and the cooler?

well the closer to the cooler the more snow that will be pushed up against the cooler and will help the cooling.

i dont have any of the cooler up front, im not home right now but i will take one on sunday night and post it up on monday for you.

here is the one of the cooling tube clearance
