hello! im new to this forum and i have a couple questions before the snow season kicks off. i have searched the forum but i havent found what im looking for yet. i know this is a gone over topic before and again but i have a 96' xcr 600 sp tripl-triple. its all stock and im wondering if i can ditch the collector box and build out the exauhst thru the hull? what impact would this have on fuel ratios and how big should i go with the jetting? im trying to shy away from buying a set of slp pipes or a dp can. im still new to sled motors but i do have a decent knowledge of car motors.
thanks for all that help,
brian

What would the point of doing this be? Modifying the exhaust silencer will not gain you any HP if that is what you are asking.

i wasnt sure if i would gain anything out of it. i was thinking it would be opening up the exhaust, more free flowing. i was more asking, if i ditched the silencer and extended each exhaust pipe down individually, would there be a gain. i dont have my heart set on buying a set of triple pipes if i can get a reasonable gain from the stock triple pipes.
thanks,
brian

Correct,I would leave it how it is. The factory triple piped sleds are tuned pretty well from the factory so there is not much to be gained by modifing your exhaust. If you had a single pipe it would be another story.

Forget 4 stroke motor knowledge with 2 strokes, it's like comparing apples to speakers.

2 strokes require exhaust tuning, not free flow. Take the advice of the guys above.

on that sled i would run a gearing close to 2:1 chain case ratio, leave the exhaust can alone, on that sled its hard to beat stock.

Opening a two stroke exhaust can cause a loss in performance. The triple pipes cause a back pressure throughout a certain rpm range which increases the amount of air/fuel mixture in the cylinder. The "shockwave" of back pressure almost acts as a closed exhaust valve; therefore you get more hp. Just opening the exhaust can reduce this "shockwave", letting fuel/air escape while the piston comes up; causing a loss in power. That is the best way I know how to explain it and I hope it makes sense.

^^good answer maxtrax. you dont want free flowing exhaust. the sound waves that go thru the pipe bounce back to the motor to provide back pressure (2 stroke motors need backpressure). no back pressure = less compression in cylinders = poorly running motor, or not running at all, or results in a blown cylinder.

Maxtrax is right on.I owna 1984(old) polaris indy 600 triple with a set of psi triple pipes on it with a bunch of motor work done, I took apart the cans at the end of each pipe and took the baffles out and then dynoed it and lost 10-12hp.After that trial we cut of the old scorpion cans and made our own that were alittle longer and had more of a baffle and we gained 15-17hp. so i would eaither save up and just buy a can from a performance company or just leave the exh. the way it is, And hop up the motor if you want more power and better sound.

Cans don't make horsepower, they make noise... The most you'll get over a stock can, is about 3 HP, not worth the cost.

If you want more power, get a set of performance pipes.

2 strokes get all of the "scavenge effect" from the expansion chamber, Not the silencer.

i ran a 22 tooth top gear and a 41 tooth bottom gear.

for clutching on mine i ran some 51 gram polaris wieghts, a 160-320 primary spring, very high engagement and wicked hole shot, silver blue secondary spring and a 50-38 helix. on hard pack i could pull a piped 700 twin pretty good.

i made a custom silencer setup for this sled but it was to loud and needed to run bigger mains. you are still better off to stick with stock silencer.
