Ok so my friend stops over while I was reading the forums... And saw a few pictures of a modded indy. I am in the thought process of how to mod my 400 and make it a nice banger/wheelie sled. Thinking larger motor swap. Risers track extension rails and tunnel. Redoing suspension, stiffer springs rebuilt or replaced shocks. Seat/tank combo and new hood. Or maybe just stripped hood. SO any info on how and where to get parts while maintaining my marriage would be appreciated.
Thanks all.

Honestly I would just save you money and buy a newer/bigger sled that will do all that without having to modify anything.

I know what your saying about wanting to build something, or have a project. But honestly, i dont believe that sled is worth doing anything to, if you had the parts i would say go for it, but if you have to buy everything, its not really worth it in my opinion. If you can spend the money on all the parts, just try and find something a little newer thats worth putting some time and money into and will be decent riding in the end.

Any ideas on a good sled to do that with? Remember I am a bigger guy and will be rather rough on it. So any input is welcome.

Grab an XLT SKS with xtra-10.. It's the light triple wedge chassis, with xtra-10 (which is a good ditch banging suspension) and long track, with the triple already in it.
Then grab a 650 triple, build the pi$$ out of it, triple pipe it, and leave the hood stock. Peeps will think 100 horse motor when they see it, and get smoked by a 150+ horse sleeper instead...

I will have to look, but I believe the 91 I have now has the xtra 10 in it. (I have 0 history on the sled until 3 years ago) I was given it by my father who got it from god only knows where. And I started my working on sleds that day. So as far as knowing what may or may not have been done is out of the question. If it does have the xtra10 in it I am thinking I want to work on that bulkhead and just extend the rails and tunnel. (no rush on doing this) as I have spent my fair share of my allowance this year already lol. Wife is going to end up killing me. But as far as that motor pm me your price and we can discuss things.
Thanks

Post some pics of the 400...
If it's a fan, you're going to have to add coolers to put in a motor with any decent power...
Also the xtra-10 wasn't available in '91, so if there's one in there it was an add-on.

There was no 400 fan. 400 is a liquid motor. Either way, id go for a different chassis. If your a bigger guy, and can throw a little extra weight around, and dont mind the wedge chassis, which you obviously dont since you wanted to mod that 400. I would suggest looking for a wedge chassis with a triple. Either an xlt, xcr, storm etc. I think all of those sleds can get a big increase in power just with a set of triple pipes.
If you really want to piece something together, see if you can find a decent chassis and motor seperatly and throw it together. But might end up costing more that way.
Like said, 91 didnt have an xtra 10, could have been added to it tho, but post some pics we can let you know if it is or not. Im guessing its not tho.

Storms came from the factory with only triple/triple configuration, never a single pipe.
There's a very good chance that the '91 400 chassis is the same chassis as the '91 650 RXL chassis, or close enough that a motor swap would be very easy...
If it doesn't have an xtra-10, he can install one, and it'll be the project sled he's looking for.

I am fairly certain the 400 had an xtra 10 placed in it. I will get some more pics of it... As far as the motor swap I am certain we can make something work. Have alot of friends in all kinds of areas that do alot of fab work. Also if the xtra 10 is there it is a good start. And the rest of it is very good shape for being a 91. And yes the 400 is liquid cooled. So that is a plus. and yes looking for a plain jane sleeper just for the rough riding I do. As far as speed I have the 97 ultra spx with the 700 trip trip in it that I do most of my riding with. the 91 is my spare / loaner sled which all of my friends are getting their own. So I would like to do something fun with it. But please keep all ideas coming and I will consider any advice at this time.
Thanks all again

If your going to swap in a triple it would be easier to just buy a sled with it allready in it. Im almost positive that a twin and tripple have diffrent frame work in the front. As in how the engine bolts in,you would have to make a custom engine plate.

You can put darn near any engine in there, so pick your target HP range, and get a motor that's in that range.
Also know that you're throwing good money after bad.. You'll never recoup your investment in this, it's only going to be your own satisfaction for a payback.

Yeah, I am thinking I was incorrect on the suspension. If that is the case i may consider putting in the xtra 10. This will probably be done via parts laying around. or cheap parts. So with that being said. I will continue to search. As I may find a different chassis kicking around. Or maybe check a bone yard. But all ideas and offers are welcome at this time.
Thanks all.
And I will snap some pictures of it on monday while I am working on it...
Also looking to dump a larger twin into it. not a tripple. As if that was the cause I would put my ultra motor in it :-p. Maybe I should think about lightening my ultra. Any ideas there? Let me know.

Also, I'm not convinced that that's an xtra-10 from that pic.. The spacing is off of the xtra-10 I have for sale here, and it's missing some idler wheels.

I really like how you decide to keep an older sled and slowly work on it and make it into a project sled. That is kind of what I want to do with my 95 indy sport 440. All I need is $$$, but don't we all?

Nice looking little machine, I am thinking thats the direction I am going. But higher handle bars as in the pic of you on it your still bent over a bit. I like the stand up riding as it gives me a ton more control to throw the sled around like a rag doll. Now it is just about money and pieceing it together.

I like the stand up riding as it gives me a ton more control to throw the sled around like a rag doll. Now it is just about money and pieceing it together.
mine only has the mountain bars and a 2" bar riser. mine dont work bad playing but suck trail riding. but i mainly play with it but it'll be trail riden this year all year.
