As it gets cooler, your furnace is running more and more. Be aware of the symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning. Here's a good link for info: http://www.carbon-monoxide-poisoning.com...fects.htmlWhen I bought my house (built in 1950) about six years ago, everything was going just fine. About two weeks of living there, I noticed I had this bad taste in my mouth and I just couldn't get rid of it. I was also sleeping more and more and always seemed to be tired. One day, while working in the basement, the furnace kicked in. The smell was terrible. Found out the exhaust for the furnace had a backflow preventer installed and was staying closed. Once that was taken out and the ducts re-routed, everything was fine.....so I thought. About three years ago, I had installed a new, high-efficiency furnace. Worked great until now. I started to get that bad taste again (two days now). Went downstairs and then remembered I had taken off a section of return air vent and the furnace was creating a vacuum in the basement not allowing the exhaust to vent properly. It was also pulling out the exhaust from the water-heater. Had to do a quick fix until I can get the proper supplies tomorrow. Always be aware of how your furnace and water heater are running. Have a professional check things out and be aware of the symptoms!!!Oh, and get a carbon monoxide detector if you don't already have one.

I got CO poisoning from working on a car in the garage when I was in high school. We had the exhaust vented outside, but it had some sort of leak we weren't aware of at the time. I was very dizzy, and had the worst headache I have EVER experienced. My dad called a local EMT and described what happened, and she was prompt to come over with an oxygen tank to flush my system with. It's definitely some bad news if it's around...

Don't buy these based on price. I bought some that were not the cheapest but not the most expensive. They were super sensative. They went off the first time I opened my fireplace doors. And they kept going off for days afterwards. Ended up calling the furnace installer. They checked out house out and found nothing. I pluged in our detector and it went off immediately. Turns out the kind I got was sort of a "disposable" model. WTF?? Never heard of that before.
I got new ones and they have never gone off. To ACM's point, I test them each year. Better safe than sorry.

While you are on the subject, it is that time of year. Check both smoke and carbon it is worth the 10 seconds and maybe 10 dollars to replace all the batteries in your house. Coming fresh from a structure fire in an apartment complex just a few weeks ago that is the only reason any of the tenants are alive today. So please for your sake and ours (fire fighters) check them and make sure they are working. Also remember plan routes for kids as well. Keep the family and yourself safe this winter.

Good to hear. (we have had lots of calls for them already this season.) Hopefully they stay false alarms and dead batteries instead of people.

I am now running a high efficiancy wood stove insert, its a different beast than the fireplace that it is now filling. I have closed it down too far twice in the evening and caused the stove pipe to cool enough that the draft reveresed into the house. both times there was no smoke or anything, but both of our co detectors went off at about 3 am the one in our bedroom was reading 130 ppm and the one outside our sons room was reading 90-95. opened a window and set up a box fan and opened the damper on the stove to get the flames rolling again to send the exaust from the wood stove back up the chimney where it belongs. took over an hour before levels dropped enough to stop triggering the alarm. definately not worth screwing with, keep a detector.......

I had to put a fan in the upstairs window blowing out and opened the screen downstairs and let it blow for about an hour. Starting to feel a little better and hopefully this crappy taste goes away by the end of the weekend.
I'm currently re-sealing all of the cold-air return ducts in the house. That's what the problem was. The newer furnace pulls and blows too much for the few vents I have. Need to figure something out on that one.

^ That reminds me. The lady I bought my house from, the reason she was selling it is she had to move to Appleton for medical reasons. She died about a month later from unknown causes. Hmmmmm, carbon monoxide maybe??? I found out that that backflow valve was installed well before she moved in.

What caused it?
I started a thread about how it almost got us last year http://www.snowmobilefanatics.com/forum/...splay.aspx
I have two installed now. One is a 50 dollar Kiddie unit. It is very sensitive and was always going off for "gas". We don't have anything "gas" in the house!! Gas alarm is very sensitive to things like hairspray. I read online others bitch about the same unit. That ok.. better safe than sorry!! It is amazing how many things can give you CO.
After our scare here.. I was babysitting my nephews at my bro's. The CO detector went off and climbed to 300 PPM within 2 minutes! Turned out the exhaust of the coal stove plugged with ash and was putting out to the house. I got the kids and animals out and shut off the coal stove then ran to leave the house. He came home, opened all windows and cleaned out the exhaust. Who knows what would have happened without that dectector. Now I know why they are mandatory to sell a house here. They should be freakin LAW to have no matter what! Selling or not!! Go buy at least two!!!!!!!!

When I was a junior in high school, I was helping my dad work on our combine while harvesting soybeans. We were working on the combine near the exhaust and their must have been a leak. I was later hauling a load of beans into town and lost control of the right side of my body. When I made it back to the field, I collapsed. My dad rushed me to the local hospital ER and I was immediately transferred to a large hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Apparently I had CO poisoning. I was sick for about 3 weeks. I had the worst headaches, vomiting etc. This went on for a solid 3 weeks. I had to go back to the ER 3 times.
CO poisoning can stay in your blood stream for a few weeks and is aweful!
Be safe!

WOW...Good info. My current home is older. Built in 73'. We replaced the furnace/AC about two or three months ago but I've got other stuff that could cause problems. My garage heater is about 30 years old and some other stuff. I can't believe I don't have a CO2 detecter in my utility room. I have one upstairs but will be making a stop at home depot tomorrow for sure for a couple more.
