Well, i was really hoping to get a new sled this summer but i didnt. Now i have 3 months until i get my liscence so i have to buy a vehicle. This means no new sled for this winter. But i dont want to ride another 1500 miles with how my sled is. Performance wise its fine. Ive got some tuning to do but not much. But i am sick of the ergonomics. It works good for slow and smooth trail riding, but anything else and it just wears me out. So im going to try to kinda update my sled this fall to get me happily through the winter. But i need some advice.

First thing is i dont like my bars. I want them to be a inch or two wider, and i cant stand the position of them. They are to low and back. Right now i have a 2 inch riser, but its not enough. Ive been looking and for 40 bucks i can get a RSI chromoly bar. I dont think i can reuse my current bar grips, but will my throttle and everything switch over to the new bars? Also, if i reroute my cables could i run 4 inches of rise before i have to lengthen them? Id check but the sleds wont be home for probably another month.

Second is the steering post. After putting on the 2 inch riser and riding harder i noticed the weakness of the steering. It got more slack in the bars when you turn, and its very easy to flex the post. What are some ways to strengthen it and tighten up everything? If i get more rise i dont think it will stand up.

Third is my seat. Its way to low and it sucks if i want to do any stand up riding. I just checked ebay and i found a new freestyle seat off of a 07 IQ for 185 bucks + shipping. Is there anywhere i can get one of these cheaper, or is that pretty cheap? Id like to fab up my own seat but i dont know where to get foam or even how to work with it. And im also not sure how id work around the tank. Would one fit ok around my tank? I dont want to do it if its going to look really bad.

It is kinda mine, my dad bought for me, but its in his name. We consider it my sled because i do all the maintenance on it and im the only one that rides it. And yes, id rather spend a couple hundred bucks to make the 500 better suit me then to go spend 3-4000 on a newer sled.

Id like to have another job, i already have 2. One job i work for my dad, and hes nearly out of work. The other one is working for my grandparents on the farm and i get paid little to nothing. The fact is i cant go out and just find a job close-by where i could get myself to work, and be able to work after school for a few hours. And dont you think that if i couldve worked enough to buy a truck and a IQ i wouldve? If we wouldve had another summer like last year where i was only getting sundays off for a while id probably be riding a newer sled, but we didnt so ive got the 500 for another year.

I had a crappy steering post. I was going to drill a hole in it and fill it with a flexible epoxy. I don't know if that would work or not, but I love trying to do stuff with epoxy that people say can't be done.

He can't afford a NEW sled. That's why he's trying to find affordable ways to make the sled he has more rideable. What's wrong with that? Is he supposed to go take out a loan for a new sled and be in debt like the rest of the country? I don't think seat, handlebar, and steering post adjustments are that out-of-line for someone on a budget.

Is your seat the seat and gas tank are one piece or is the seat separate from the each other? Because that was an option when your sled came out The one piece seat was made for more long rides and not so much ditch banging. Mine is this and it is comfortable but I stand up a lot so I do not notice it that much. The steering thing that I believe is normal because that is a quick way of telling how many miles are on a sled if it is lose it has a lot of miles if it is tight it does not have that many miles Mine has 9088 miles on it and when I touch the bars or just jiggle them they move a good half to 1 and a half inches before they can turn the sled I wouldn't worry to much about that

Its the two piece seat and tank. My dads 700 XC is the one piece seat. I love my seat but its to short. The main difference i noticed between my sled and my brothers Supersport was the seat height. The Edge seat seems to sit taller then mine and made it easier to stand up.

And i figured my steering stuff is worn out. Its got 7000 miles and ive never messed with it. The big thing that worries me though is just the overall strength of the post. It just seems to bend and twist way to easy with a small riser. And it felt sloppier once i put my riser on. Im worried that if i go with taller bars its just gonna start tearing up stuff. But i never noticed excessive slop on my dads sled and it has 2000 more and harder miles.

You have a '99 XC 500! That sounds like a fine sled for any 15 year old to have...

I would Just take good care of it. Maybe do some things with the ergonomics(as you stated) of it that you think will make a difference in the ride. Look for an upholstery man to add a couple inches to your seat. There is a guy near me who could make it look like a new seat for maybe 75-100 dollars! Your steering post is an important concern though! That should be snug. You should be able to tighten that up. You may have to move a few things to get to the nuts. Mine broke on the 583 last year. I got lucky... It broke just after I made it over to my friends house when I tipped it on it's side to check my carbides.

I have a '97 MXZ-583 and an '05 Renegade. I have just as much fun riding the 583 as I do the Rev. Even if it does not soak up the bumps as well as the Rev I have no problem riding it hard all day and into the night.

Did you take your safety class!!)

Here's a steering post. You tighten it where the U-bolt is. It may need new bushings also. I'm sure yours is different, but this should give you a rough idea.

I didn't realize that there was an age restriction on asking questions without getting bashed...

This may sound dumb ohio kid but have you tried to roll your bars forward? on a lot of sleds you'll gain an inch or so by doing that. That's the biggest bang for your buck IMO on a sled like yours (getting the bars to a comfy height). Let's say worst case, new riser and bars and cable extensions.....maybe 100 bucks

Yeah Trickpaint, i love my 500. Im not planning on messing with the motor or suspension except getting it running good. I already like how my sled rides and handles. Im just going to try to fix the ergonomics for off-trail and the rough stuff. Hopefully ill have my sled home in a month so ill check out the steering post and see if i can tighten anything up. And i havent taken a safety class yet. Weve been to busy to go anywhere. If i dont get one in before Christmas ill just ride without a permit and see what happens.

I have my bars set up the best i can get them, and have them rolled up. I dont have a pivot riser but itd probably give me a little bit more rise. I havent tried rotating the bars all the way up and then rotating the controls down, but im not sure if id like that. If i get a new bar i might cut up my old one and make my own.

I think that for my bars im just going to get a RSI chromoly bar. Im not sure if i want to go with a 4 inch and dump my riser, or keep the riser and go with a 2 inch. And would i have to get a whole new handwarmer kit, or could i just get new elements and wire into the current switch? Ive thought about making like a little dash panel with all the switches but i really like being able to work everything with my thumbs. Im just trying to come up with the best setup i can get without spending much money.

I just checked a snowmobile salvage yard and they want 200 bucks for a Edge seat, so i might just make my own freestyle-like seat. Im sure i can round up some tubing and i have access to all the tools i need, except maybe foam. Ive thought about adding foam to my seat, but i really want to keep all the factory parts stock and in good shape so i can put them back on if we sell them. Plus my seat looks new so i dont want to mess with it. Im gonna do some searches to see what other people have done.

Do you have a vendetta against this kid or what? Not that it's my business nor do I care but I'm curious as to why you have this "holier than thou" attitude being your only 18 yourself. Either the 500 you've got is the first sled you've ever ridden or someone helped you out in highschool. Get over it and don't be a hypocrite.

so just because this kid has his "own" sled that was bought for him, he should just shut up and ride? not try and improve what he doesn't like. it close minded people like this that's turning this country into ****.

i think you're out of luck with buying a seat from another sled. i don't think most will fit around the gas tank. i believe your best bet would be to buy an after market seat cover from a dennis kirk type place and find some type of foam rubber that you like. try and rig something up for yourself.

if riding on bumpy trails is what's making you tired, then i can tell you for sure, it because of the 10 inches of suspension you have. when i first switched from my 97 ultra spx to my 02 700 xc. it was a world of a difference. i could ride all day without a problem. personally, i would try spending 300 on a used edge suspension before anything else. then go from there. if you don't have the money then i would try the seat cover option but that will probably stil cost around 150$.

Maybe if you get your shocks rebuilt and valved for riding style it will help it is worth a try before you try and mount an edge suspension in it

Its not really the rough trails wearing me out, its just that my sled doesnt let me stand up easily. I really get a work out on rough trails going from sitting to standing. And then once im standing my bars are to low so i have to bend over to reach them. And with my seat i figured id have to make my own. I think if im going to do it ill have to find a big block of foam and just trim it to make it fit. Ive also read that the Edge seat and tank will swap over with a little work. Maybe ill have to "borrow" my brothers seat and tank for a while.

Ive been thinking of turning my 500 into like a mod sled, and if i do that ill get a Edge or Pro-X skid and put in. I could probably build up the 500 cheaper then i could buy a newer Swtichback. I also found a sled salvage yard 2 hours from here, so i might give them a call and see what they have. But if i do start messing with my sled it wont be until probably the spring or mid winter. I have to get a vehicle first, then see what i have left over to play with.

For starters try what sledneck-1978said. Roll your bars forward and adjust control clusters on bars. That is what I did on my MXZ-583 and put a 2" riser block on it. You can tell in the picture below that it pushed things up a total of maybe 4"! If you go with a 2" block you should be 'OK with your existing cables.

If you want me to find out what this guy at 2001 Upholstery would charge to add a couple inches to your seat, I can check into it. I am having him put some ears in one of my sled covers to account for higher bars and hand guards, so I will see him this week. Just let me know.

so just because this kid has his "own" sled that was bought for him, he should just shut up and ride? not try and improve what he doesn't like. it close minded people like this that's turning this country into ****.

i think you're out of luck with buying a seat from another sled. i don't think most will fit around the gas tank. i believe your best bet would be to buy an after market seat cover from a dennis kirk type place and find some type of foam rubber that you like. try and rig something up for yourself.

if riding on bumpy trails is what's making you tired, then i can tell you for sure, it because of the 10 inches of suspension you have. when i first switched from my 97 ultra spx to my 02 700 xc. it was a world of a difference. i could ride all day without a problem. personally, i would try spending 300 on a used edge suspension before anything else. then go from there.

You should go to the salvage place and just start digging. You'd be suprised what you'll come across and what you can make fit on what with a little imagination. Most bone yards I've been to want you to pull your own parts so bring tools. If you don't and they have to pull the stuff for you your savings goes out the window. Why are you waiting so long to get your sled home? I'd be pulling that beotch apart right now.
