I am looking at getting my y-pipe, pipe, and silencer all sandblasted and repainted. What should something like this cost. My pipe and especially my fathers exhaust system is very rusty and has barely any paint left. I already got a quote from a guy, but I want to hear what you guys think before I say the number.
Thanks guys!

Cmon get a wire brush on your drill or grinder and clean and paint it yourself. Use a high heat paint and they come out like new.

Good idea but it won't work.
The metal has to be sandblasted completely otherwise the paint will not stay on.
The proper way is to sandblast, paint with a ceramic base paint, then bake in a oven at 4 to 5 hundred degrees for 2 to 3 hours.
Been there, done that.

Why wouldn't it last?
The estimate I was given was $125 for all three sandblasted and painted...

It wont last because of the extreme heat changes the metal goes through when riding and parking the sled.
days get shorter, nights get longer, snow gets deeper, life gets better

I am thinking about doing this to my old sled, only not sandblasting. Why couldn't I sand it down to bare metal and paint then, and use the engine's heat instead of an oven?

Its not like we are talking out of our ass by saying it isnt working, quite a few people have tried it. It hasnt really had much success either, however. if its bad enough its not like its gonna make it any worse by sandblasting/painting it. You may find a way that actually works and comes out nice.

I sanded mine down with a sanding wheel attachment on my cordless drill and also by hand. I then used the Dupli color hi temp paint.
It turned out nice and lasted a season or two. but like mentioned, it doesn't hold up for long. Just plan on doing it every season or every other. Here is a pic.

You can do it, but it will only last a season, or two if you take care to clean it. Ive seen it done enuff times, and have done it myself, and I am an industrial painter. Trust us when we say, it wont last. but you should paint the y pipe. Use stove black, the paint they use for painting wood stoves. Its flat black and looks good. Maybe instead of painting the exhaust, you could sand the bad spots, and finish with a very very fine grit and then buff, polish. A shiny exhaust looks awesome. still only lasts couple seasons too.

Would a primer work before adding paint or is there such thing as high temp primer?

there is a primer but you would need to prime then bake the primer on for a while and then go back and bake the paint on after when i first painted my pipe i had painted it and then i put a hi temp clear over it and the paint under neith the clear relesed gasses when it was baking causing the clear to bubble and made the whilt thing look like a perfectly toasted marshmellow....

Here is a thread to read for those thinking of doing this. I did this TWICE and same results both times. I sandblasted my ass off, them babys were raw. I did exactly as the can said, even had it baked on in an oven for the time and temp they needed. Read this thread and look at my pictures

^Too bad you had to go through it twice!! When I did my pipes, I just blasted them (there was still some rust on them). Then sprayed and installed. When it comes to touch-up, I start the engine and spray them. Yep, on the sled with hot pipes. I've only touched-up twice in the past two years and they still look pretty good.

I thought ceramic coating would be harder to do.
Do you guys just use your kitchen oven? Does it make the oven stink like paint for a while?
I don't even think my exhaust would fit in an oven. I am very interested in ceramic coating now that i see its not that bad of a process.
