so i have an opportunity to by a 1998 polaris ultra 700, looking for any information i can get about them.. heres what he has told me about it, and a couple pics..
track in good shape with 144 studs, skis have new carbides on them, shocks were just replaced with newly rebuilt rebuildable ones, rear is a fox shock(originals werent fox shocks on this?) has metal skis with ski skins (that will be getting replaced with plastic ones), everything works, runs great, 5400 miles on it, got it from orig owner but doesnt know if it was ever rebuilt or anything. he says its really clean/not abused and it does look to be nice in the pics..
how much would you say this sled is worth?
any information you can give me on these sleds would be great, are they known for crank problems like some of the xlt's? are they much faster then xlt's or not by much? any common problems with these sleds? does the rearend on this one seem like it should be up higher? are the 98's actually a 700 or are they the 680cc? any info i could get about these sleds would be much appreciated, heres a couple of pics..

Very very good sleds A good ditch banging sled for the time even today they are really good trail sleds very fast stock but if you want more power PSI used to make pipes that added about 36 HP after somebody clutched it that machine would puul arms out of socket because they were powerful.

1998 Polaris Indy 500 chassis with 98 Xc 600 motor
SLP ceramic coated pipe with SLP can
V-force reeds
4 inch pivot riser
Gutted Air Box
EPI clutch kit soon to be installed
Maybe some pro tapers

1998 XC 700 water-cross sled
SLP twin pipes
Some light weight parts
Water-cross mods include taking the parts u do not need
This includes removing the seat replacing gas tank and IFS bars.

thanks for the quick reply, good to hear, yes i have heard good things about the slp pipes as well as the psi, i may end up piping and clutching it, not real sure yet want to see what kind of power it has without them first, but i do LOVE the sound of a piped triple triple!

Even if you clutch it stock it will have more that enough power to pull arms But who doesn't want more power out of a triple sometimes LOL

well, i bought it!! i ended up picking it up for for $1100..its not quite as clean as he made it out to be, but it is in nice shape! ill post up some pics tomorrow when its daylight..., the only thing i noticed that concerned me is there were little peices of something, almost looked like ashes, or maybe tiny peices of leaves, or something floating in the top of the coolant tank, not alot but a few of them, obviously im going to flush it out, but is this anything to be real worried about?
the only other thing i noticed was while its sitting there idling you can hear somewhat of a 'whining' or 'whistling' noise, anyone have an idea what this could be, or even if its anything too uncommon?
still looking for any info on these sleds that i can get.. common problems, things to check/keep an eye on, etc etc...any info is much appreciated..

When you went from the single pipe to a tripple pipe like psi modblasters you got a huge gain. It is probably pretty close to 36 hp.

Definitely triple pipe it for huuuuge power gains. Triples should never have left the factory with single pipes, except the 580/600 mono-block.

BTW, stuff floating in the coolant tank may be a sign that some additive was put in to stop a leak. Keep your eyes open.

Could be the water pump. It is gear driven and has it's own oil. there is a sight glass on the front of the engine. drain it and put fresh 0w-40 oil in it.

not many problems with this sled. biggest thing was that it didn't meet the hype polaris claimed it to have. Very disapointing performance. Now I am not saying it isn't a great sled, which it is. I had mine and loved it. It just didn't live up to the hp numbers that polaris had stated early in the sleds introduction.

The whining noise is the water pump for sure. You can buy the parts to rebuild it.
The only year Polaris used the oil filled pump was in 1996. yours doesn't have unless it was replaced with one.

There is a weep hole on the bottom of the pump that will start leaking coolant out of it, my guess is the previous owner saw coolant leaking and put some kind of sealer in it,hence the stuff floating in the coolant tank.

Waterpumps are known to go after about 3000miles,coolent leaks into the crank and takes out the bearings. My brother had 2 fail from this problem.

That whining sound is most likely the water pump. I picked up up a 98 Ultra touring last fall with less than 3000 miles on it. I thought the engine had such a cool distinct sound. A bit of a whine, almost like a blower. Well, it turns out that the cool whine sound was one of the bearings on the pump. This is a common problem with these sleds.

Mine went out right when we had primo riding conditions last season. Its my wifes sled so she was pretty bummed. I ended up pulling the pump and sending it to the dealer to rebuild it. I believe it was right around $300 and I got it back in about 4 days. If I would have known earlier in the year I would have done the entire repair myself. depending on what needs to be replaced I think you can get the parts for around $150. You'll need JIS (Japansese Industrial Standard) screwdrivers in order to split the pump. The screws that hold it together only look like Phillips heads. If you use a phillips head screwdriver you'll likely strip out the screws in short order.

Also, send me PM if you'd like the excerpt from the Polaris Factory service manual that walks you through the rebuild, I've got a PDF of it.

thanks you guys are great! ill be sure to rebuild that pump before the snow starts to fly! is this something you think i can handle or should i bring it to a shop? im not the most mechanically inclined person, but i do have a little knowledge working on sleds, and i do have some common sense lol, is there anything that can easily go wrong, or basically just taking off old parts and puttin new ones in there place?
ill get right on that PM snowmobileaddict, thanks!
