I picked up a 01 xc500 today with no engine. Has anyone put in a xlt or a 650 triple into one? Ive seen a bunch with the xcr triple, but i have a 650 and a 580 allready and would like to put one of them in it. I think i remember seeing one with a 650 somewhere but cant remember where.

^^^^he says he already has the engines.....why not try

The pipe fitment will be your biggest problem. Motor straps, airbox, and belt fitment also. If your a wrencher and have access to parts go for it

If you're going to all the effort to dop a motor swap, I'd definitely go for the 650 as it has a lot more potential for future mods...

Did some tinkering with it today, trying to get an idea on how things will fit. Havent decided on what motor to use but i set the 580 in just to get an idea, the 650 is in my xlt. I have triple pipes for the 580 and it realy doesnt fit to bad. It may not be to bad of a project

Built a custom mount and bolted in the 650 today. Im looking for some triple pipes, but the stock one will work with some simple mods. I also removed the airbox/oil container and im going to use a wedge airbox, oil and coolant bottle.

Grab the secondary clutch that was with the 650 originally, it should work quite a bit better with no other changes.

But, you probably need to redo both clutches, because the gearing and weight is different.

Both clutches are from the 650. This motor had a simular problem last winter, i tore it down over the summer and found 2 skirts broken off the pistons, and a bad crank seal. Redid it over the summer and this is its first run.

How old are the reeds? Did you clean out the carbs?

The 650 is a piston port, no reeds. Carbs have been apart about 300 times, there spotless and i have made sure jetting is stock. This is a RXL motor converted to carbs buy a previous owner.

Did you have to move motor mounts or did it just drop in on the existing mounts?

I used 800 big block straps, Had to drill 2 holes, one in each strap, move the front mount on the recoil side, the spot was there from factory just had to grind out the rivits and move it over. And modify the rear mount on the same side, just made it wider.

Yeah, duhhh, piston port... I wasn't thinking when I asked that.

You didn't have to change the clutch spacing, right?

I got it to run allot better. Still has a bog but its much better. I took out the stupid ufo things that where in the carbs. Im thinking the right belt would help to, When i mounted the motor i went with edge 11.5in center to center, and used a 045 belt from my wedge xlt that uses 12in center to center
