I got offered to trade my 1993 Jag Z 440 with a bad engine for a 1993 Ski-Doo Grand Touring 583. From what I'm told the sled is in great shape. 3400 miles, electric start, reverse, and warmers. Is my sled worth that much? I got a $400 offer too. Please tell me what you can about the Ski-Doo. Is it a solid engine? Liquid cooled? Top speed? Any info would be appreciated.

the 583 rotax motors are bulletproof. It is liquid cooled as well and should top out over 90 in good conditions. It was one of the best snowmobile engines made actually. It made decent power too with the rave valves. I drove a formula 583 and was impressed with the engine especially for being older (1998). The 583 rotaxs are like ski-doo's version of polaris' 488 fuji twin.

You can never really put a mileage limitation on an engine for a rebuild. Checking compression should be your first step in determining an engines health without opening it up. Plug readings also give you a good indication of the engines overall condition. If your compression is low, at the minimum, tear it down and re-ring it and deglaze the cylinders. Otherwise, run it and keep an eye on compression and jetting and it should be fine for thousands of miles to come.
