i recently tested my compression. I put the tester in each cylinder and pulled three times. i got 117 120 and 98 on pto side. What might cause this? And more importantly how can i fix this with out spending a lot if possible.

Takes several hours and the proper tools to do it with. Plan on pretty much all day on a weekend or a couple weekdays after work/school doing it for the first time.

You'll need a compression tester, a torque wrench, and since you'll want to measure the bore you'll need a inside micrometer and either a micrometer or a digital caliper to read it with, and you might need a de-glazing hone to clean up the cylinders. Scrapers to clean off the gasket material.. All that can be had at Harbor Freight for under $100.

While you have the carbs off, check the boots for hairline cracks.. One of them cracks widening in the middle of winter can cause a burndown.

Grab the polaris 96-98 manual here in this thread - http://www.snowmobilefanatics.com/forum/...px#1043304 - and use it as a guide for the removal and rebuild.

Your close to a rebuild as they are supposed to be within 10% of each other.

You could try new rings but most likely a rebuild will be in your future. You'd be better off using a hole gauge and a dial caliper or a micromiter for mesuring bore. If you just use a dial caliper you can only get so deep. Also there is most likely a ridge at the top of the cylinder so its not very accurate. If you do it your self for about 300 bucks you could have some nice pistons and a hell of a triple
