How is the riding and trails around Fence/Goodman WI? Starting point will be Hilbert Lake. Good pit stops for food, things to see? Any info would be great. Thanks!

I have ridden in the area. The trails themselves are fairly nice. Not the best or worst you will ever ride. I am trying to remember the name of a place up there...Richards I think.
With the snow we had the past 2 years, the riding has been pretty nice. Have you been anywhere near there before? Have trail maps? Beware, our maps show that the intersections are numbered...but there has to be a sign there to let you know what intersection you are at. I usually make a check list of landmarks so I know which way I want to turn.
Here is a link to a map of that area. http://www.dungood.com/map.htm
If you want to go north or west of there, you will want to contact the following counties for maps: Oconto (west)and Florence (north) One loop you could make (about 150 miles) would be to go down south to Crivitz, west to Mountain and back north toward Laona and then follow a map back to Hilbert Lake. The trail from Mountain to Laona is an old rail grade. Good for some speed runs-nice WIDE trail. With the exception of a 15 mile detour near Laona, you can take that grade all the way up to Iron River MI. We like to stop at Dan's Bar in Laona (right on the trail). they have good sandwiches and homemade potato chips. There is another place on the trail to the south that a ton of people stop at. Always packed when we go through so we never stopped.
If you want to go farther west and north, contact Onieda and Vilas counties. Those maps with get you to Rhinelander, Three Lakes area and north. This area sees a bit more traffic so beware that the corners can be a bit icy.
Bring a GPS if you have one. Cross roads are not well marked especially if you are off the state corridors-on "club" trails.
Get the maps before you get here. There does not seem to be a lot of places that carry the local map and the neighboring clubs map at the same place. I tried to wing it last year and would have run out of gas if it were not some help from some good people. Based on my tank size and milage, I figure I had less than half a gallon when I got to the station.
PM me if you would like more info. I think I am missing some counties. If you want to travel in MI, I would have a little info there also.

Thanks, thats great info! Have been looking on the counties websites, and requested some maps. I have never been riding around there. We mostly ride Shawano, if the snow is good and get to visit some family too. Otherwise we do a lot of weekend/week trips in the U.P. My mom inherited a house up there, and I'd like to get some use out of it. In case she decides to sell it. It would save us the travel time compared to driving to Lake Gogebic MI.

How is the riding in that part of the UP? Never have been in that area in the winter and it has been quite a while since I was there at all. The wife and I are planning on taking an overnight. Figured we would leave from here and go to Iron River and jump off from there.
So, if you have a MI trail pass, you could go to Florance from the Goodman area. Skip over to MI and ride another rail grade most of the way-if not all the way-to Iron River and then back down through WI. I have only been on that trail from Powers to just past Florence. If the rest of the trail is like the south part I was on, should be a quick ride to Iron River. Have you been there? If not, we like to go to the Riverside Bar for pizza. That is prety much right on the trail-well, the parking lot is anyway.

I like it around there. We only had a problem one year were it warmed up and rained a few days into the trip. After talking to the locals they said normally a week in jan. it likes to warm up, and goes right back to cold and snow. Except that year it did it in the second week of feb. Overall there is some great riding around there. We ride N,W,NE from the lake, so I couldn't tell you how the ride from Iron River would be. Mostly ride from Lake Gogebic to Houghton. We have done Gogebic to Copper Harbor, thats almost a 300 mile round trip. The only trail that sucks every year is Mass City going up that way. Gogebic to Ironwood and Hurley is a nice ride. The lake has a handful of places to eat, the Root Cellar is the best IMO Great food and owners take very good care of you. Not a fan of the Gogebic lodge, extremely rude and ignorant. There's plenty of places to stay on the lake.
We always talked about riding around Iron River and Iron Mountain, and never have. I hear alot of people talking about the Riverside Bar.

Thanks for the info. We may end up that way this year if the snow doesn't come like the last two years. We are supposed to be a litle above normal on temp and about ave for snow.

Ya, there is an eatary/bar in Dunbar Wisconsin i believe its called richards, they have very very good food and there breakfast is even better. If i were you i might go over towards Lake Wood Wisconsin which is probably an hour or so ride if your moving. I like that area alot. Then the Iron Mountain area has good trails but you have to get a diffrent registration sticker if you go out that way.

Yeah, Lakewood, Townsend, Laona, Wabeno they are all on the same trail #7 I think. That's the rail grade. would be even better if there were no cross roads!

ya, i live in appleton. I have my mom or dad drop me and my buddys off and then we either go from freedome or bounduel and we hook up with that rail grade in Suring, and just high tail it up to my cabin in lake wood. I also like the Park Falls, Butter Nut, and Gliden trails.

What is the trail network like between Suring and Freedom? I have a buddy that lives there. I always thought I would ride the ice on the bay of Green Bay and then hook up on the trail down to Freedom.

I honestly couldnt tell you, but you ride the ice in the bay. I heard that you should never go on that. I think that this link should be able to help you. http://www.co.outagamie.wi.us/parks/coun...bile08.pdf and then this is also with that map. http://www.co.outagamie.wi.us/parks/coun...bile08.pdf and then this is also the one that is in the other county. I cant find the link now but it takes me about an hours to get from freedome to suring if i am flying, and from there maybe about an hour or so to lake wood. I like the ride but you have to have alot of trust in your machine. I really like the railroad grade because its really wide and if you are on it at 12 pm on friday there will not be anybody on it yet.

Yes, I do sometimes ride the bay ice. I stay close to shore when I do-a couple hundred feet at most-far INSIDE the pressure cracks. And then only when they is enough snow.
How much I ride depends on what kind of temps and snow fall there was. Normally I don't go out until late Jan. I fish a lot along this shoreline. Where I ride, the water is usually 5-6 feet deep. Should my sled go down, I could stand on the bottom and push myself onto the ice. If I even think the ice is bad, I don't go. That means only a few rides a year will be on that ice.
