Ok last season was my first time out on my sleds and I noticed that my 500 was pretty much a terd. It has a little over 5000 miles on it and I checked the compression. When I checked it it came out to 90 in one and 95 in the other but I did not know I had to let it warm up first so it probably not accurate. The plugs are oil soaked, it has trouble getting over 70mph and every once in a while it will take off and run much better but for only a minute or two then back to terd status. Most of my riding was when it was warm out.
My question is does this sound lke bad compression, two rich, two warm, carbs need cleaning, any ideas would be much appreciated.

Also should my 99 500xcsp be faster than a 2004 ski doo 500 two trail sled? They are close but the doo passes me up by a smidge.

Isn't the doo a 600 with lower porting and smaller carbs????

Edit:

With comp that low you atleast need to rering it. Clutch springs may need to be refreshened also.

Is your 700 an early or late year? I had similar problem with my 2000 600 xcsp and it turned out to be a bad throttle position sensor which is next to carbs. Unplug the sensor and it runs great. The dealership told me this sled did not have this TPS but it actually does and it shares it with the Arctic Cats of similar years.I still have a MBRP can for your sled if you want a little more performance and Im selling it cheap.

Not sure if either of my sleds are early or late models.

Can I just do the rings on it or do I have to change the pistons? Do I need to hone the cylinders or should they be fine?

just do the whole tune up. clean your carbs, check your compression again when its warm. and change out the spark plugs. if it still runs bad then you know its not one of those 3 things. (only if all three things were done right and your compression was good.)

When you check the compression, you need to hold the throttle wide open, are you doing that? Also, pull all the plugs and only have the compression tester in the holes.

If the plugs are black and wet, it's too rich, adjust your carbs. If they're oily/stucky, adjust the oil pump.

Being that you said it was warm out, it was running real rich. If you jet it for warm weather, you will be too lean when its cold. Took my Xcr 800 out on a 42 degree day last year on a lake. That didn't last long........ran like a dog and I am jetted down 2 steps from stock.

I did not hold the throttle open or warm it up before checking. I didnt know how to check it properly but when I go home that is going to be one of the first things I do. I did you stable in the gas tanks of both sleds and ran them once over the summer but I am sure they need to have the carbs cleaned also. I think the 500 was not very well maintained just ridden. The carbides were worn completely out and the ski was being chewed up by the roads. The suspension was squeaky needed grease.

When I get home my plan is to take a quick ride on my 700 for about an hour then go home and rib the carbs off and clean them on both sleds. One at a time so I can put it back together properly though. lol I cant wait to get that ripsaw track i some deep powder out on the power lines.

I'm putting together a tool kit/emergency kit for my sled. A gerber, colapsable shovel, chem lights "glow sticks", my sure fire flashlight, duct tape, 550 cord and some rope that I can tow with. I hate to doit cause I dont want the weight but I know if I dont I will need some day.

Buy new rings for your sled, and re-ring it. Clean your clutches, and make sure your airbox is free of dirt etc... If you have VES valves, CLEAN THEM!!! If you still have the bottom end as before, but no top end, then your valves are dirty. It takes 10 minutes to clean them, and is more than worth it.
