i could use a quick top end rebuild break downfor my polaris 500. Is it a bad idea to buy the cheap pistons and rings for sale on ebay? they are about 90 bucks for the pair.

I had a member here walk me through putting my engine in my chassis and hooking all the lines up, then purging them, etc. Was very helpful and I learned quite a bit! Also saved a could have been a couple hundred bucks at the dealer.

Top end rebuild Polaris Liberty case reed engine:
Read through all the steps before starting

-Clean up the engine/engine bay the best you can
-Remove exhaust including Y-pipe
-Clean engine again
-Remove spark plugs
-Remove carbs (shut off fuel first)
-Drain coolant out of engine (4-6qts)
-Unplug any sensors in the head(mark pairs of wires so you remember where they go)
-Unbolt cylinder head (12 bolts 1/2")
-Unbolt first cylinder (2x 4 bolts 9/16")
-remove other cylinder
-Remove C-clips from piston
-Drive out wrist pin
-Repeat last two steps for the other piston
-Remove ALL of the gasket material between the cylinder base and crankcase making sure not to drop any into the case.
-Maintain a clean engine bay making sure NOTHING gets into the cases, not even dust if you can help it.
-Clean all of the parts individually the best you can

-Get new base gaskets, upper rod bearings, cylinder head O-rings, pistons and C-clips

-Install new rod bearings
-Install new pistons and C-clips
-Lay new gaskets onto crankcase(make sure you put them on the right way)
-Apply think coating of 2-stroke oil to pistons and cylinders

(The piston ring grooves have stops in them to prevent the rings from working around the piston, you need to make sure you align the open end of the ring around the stop or you won't be able to fit the piston in the cylinder)

-Position the piston you are working on to Top Dead Center (pull it all the way up)
-Squeeze piston rings and slide cylinder over the top of the piston
-Lightly bolt down the first cylinder
-Position the other piston to TDC and slide cylinder over it
-Lightly bolt down the second cylinder
-Torque the first cylinders down to half of the torque specified, then 75% and then to the full amount
-Install new O-rings in the top of the cylinders
-Lay head on top of cylinders and lightly bolt down
-Torque the cylinder head bolts down to 25% of specified torque in a lug nut pattern, then 50%, 75% and then the full amount. (You torque the bolts in steps in a lug nut pattern to make sure you dont warp the head when installing it)
-Reinstall carbs, sensor wires and spark plugs
-Reconnect coolant lines
-Reinstall exhaust
-Double check everything
-Turn fuel back on
-Open coolant bleed screw on top of engine thermostat
-Fill coolant reservoir
-Park sled on a hill or safely lift front end up so the top of the engine is above any other part of the cooling system
-Start engine
-Take cap off of coolant reservoir
-Slowly open bleed screw until coolant comes out, then close
(If reservoir bottle empties; tighten bleed screw and refill reservoir)
Make sure you've got coolant coming out of the bleed screw and the reservoir bottle is full
-Put cap onto the coolant reservoir
-Get engine to full operating temperature and check bleed screw and coolant reservoir again

Wow Powersledder thank you soo much. I am actually pretty excited to try this when I get home. I only get to ride a couple of weeks per season but I will take some time out of my riding and do this.

Sorry if I have alot of problems and questions I live about 1,000 miles away from my sleds otherwise I would have time to do this over the summer. Everyone on this site is very helpful and I am pretty good at working on cars so I should be able to do this correctly.
Thanks again
Barry

!!! I think you started 2 or 3 threads asking how to tune carbs and people made very very detailed posts on how to do it. It's like you don't read them for some reason.

Why post on an internet forum asking for someone to type a detailed response to you and then proceed to ignore it and claim you can't learn anything by reading?

Someone needs to slap this kid on the back of the head, dumba$$

Either get a computer out in the garage with your sled or print out the instructions given to you and have at it.

Here we go again

You were helped here
http://www.snowmobilefanatics.com/forum/...st=1060767

and here
http://www.snowmobilefanatics.com/forum/...st=1061345

And must be you didn't read this
http://www.snowmobilefanatics.com/forum/...st=1062159

You were probably helped elsewhere to in one of your million carb threads but I am not reading them again.

You may receive a warning as it seems that you will not stop. You are wasting forum members time that try to help you when they could be helping people who will listen.
