Putting a new helix in the Storm, when I disassembled it, I only remember being able to turn the sheave one way and the other way I couldnt. When having the helix facing me, I could turn it counter clockwise. I put the new one in and now I can turn it both ways about the same distance. The only thing I can think of, is I didnt catch what hole the spring was in on the helix, as it kinda exploded in my face when I took the snap ring off. So when I put the new one on, I just put it in the 2nd hole like the book said. Is that a good place to put it, and is that why I can turn the moveable sheave both directions, or is theres something else there. What hole should I put the spring in? I'm running a heavier spring in my primary, engagement is about 5500, and im running 21:39 gears.

You didn't preload the spring. You need to have 1/3- 1/4 turn of pretension on the spring. I have the key way on the clutch at 12 o'clock position and the helix key way at 9 o'clock. I then hold the clutch turn the helix, line up the key way, push down helix, insert the key, push helix down farther so that I can place 1-2 washers and then install snap ring. 2 people make this job a tad easier.

If you can move the sheave both directions somethings just not right.Hole placement determines how many #s of pull, your book should tell you.I go by feel on the way it's back shifting,I'm guessing mine is around 14-15#s.

Well before I tore it apart, I oouldnt hardly move it easily, cuz it needed cleaned. I thought I did preload it, as I did what you said last night, I put it so it was at the bottom of the cam, then as I turned it to line up with the key, put the key in, pressed the helix down, put the snap ring in, and felt it. FWIW, this is a P90 secondary I believe, as it has the spline bore for the jackshaft not the keyway. Came off a '93 Storm

P90 came on indy lite and such, not storms. Those came with P85's.

Well thats what I thought too, but I pulled the secondary off my XLT, and it had a key on the jackshaft, where as the Storm has splines on the jackshaft.
I may have been turning the fixed sheave and shaft, and not the helix. I'll try it again, hopefully I can get it this time. Maybe I can get dad to help me seeing how I dont have a 3rd hand. Thanks guys

I just looked up the shaft on a parts list and it looks keyed. I did not know that. Give it another shot, you will get it.

On a Storm should definitely be a P-85 Wide Roller clutch, and 5500RPM engagement will smoke your belts faster than you can get them on!! Also, don't tease us on your Avatar, give us "frontal" pic of that bad A$$ 750cc Storm, if it is a '93 that is!!!! I know a few guys that are A$$ men, but most of us like what's on the front of the package too, you know got play with the radio dials!!!

That picture is my '91 Classic with a Xtra 12 in it, havent rode it yet, interested to see how that turns out....
I have some pictures of the Storm, but they're before I did alot too it. Now I'm running '95 jugs, Vforce 3 reeds, clutch kit from madcow, DG can, gutted airbox, some plastic skis, and really thats about it. I've had the other parts of the clutch kit in since last year, but I hadnt gotten the helix in yet. The higher engagement didnt seem to hurt my belt. I had a 440XCR hood on the Storm for alittle while, but took it off and put the original back on. After I get it back together, I'll get some pictures up of it.
Ok, I did how you said, and I can still turn it both ways, which I know isnt right. I did it just like you said and I couldnt seem to get it right. I took the fixed sheave and shaft, cleaned that up really good, put some low temp grease on the moveable sheeve bore like it said to in the manual, put the spring in the 2nd hole on the helix, set the other end of the spring in the hole down in the moveable sheeve, turned the shaft to 12, helix to 9, and moved the helix to 12 and put the key in, pressed it down and put the snap ring on with the washer. I dont know what I'm doing thats different then what I'm supposed to do. I know its gotta be really simple and im just missing something.... Here's some pictures of it after I first got it, I've had it for about 3 years now.
