So last spring in T.C. michigan all of the snow melted. A couple of days later we got about 10 inches so I thought i would ride to my buddies house about 20 miles away by road. I got there hung out for a little bit until it started to warm up. On my way home I got within two miles of my house and was hitting some ditch banks and jumping driveways. I got in this one yard and saw it from about 50 yards away and instantly thought SWEET. It looked so awesome I was gonna clear this driveway and some. Well I got up to about fifty mph and hit it. I did not see the culvert because of the fresh snow and stuck my ski into it. The worst part besides f-ing my sled up and flying through the air was that there was a work van parked right next to me and he was in it talking on the phone. Once I was done skipping across the ditch he ran out of his vehicle and was pretty concerned about me. I was fine so I thought but the addrenaline and embarressment masked the pain. I said I was good and tried to ride my sled with all of the steering arms and such broken and my trailing arm snapped. I did limp it to a church right down the rode and bummed a ride from a couple of kids in the parking lot, not sure what they were doing there. Got home called a buddy and picked it up with my trailer.
I ended up with a hurt back, leg and arm luckily nothing too serious with me. About $600 plus in just parts, I was able to do the work myself, a loss of pride and a lesson learned. when there is not much snow be careful of the ditches.
Any experiences like this or any stupid crashes?

Yea I think I can thank culverts for a set of contorl arms on my old sled. Not to mention a few buddies sleds.
One of them that I hit was a decent sized one. My ski hooked it and turned me right around. I was able to limp it home. Did a cheap fix on it so I could ride it intill the parts came. So I only lost 2 days of ride time.

when in doubt throttle it out

I was running some ditches last winter here in Mt. Vernon Ohio last winter with a friend to gas up. I hit a big pipe sticking about 6" above ground. Didn't do any damage, but if I was going 20 mph + I think I would have screwed something up on the sled.
We were just putting along though, so just got a hard jolt.

Got to really pay attention to all those man made land mines when you get near populated areas (both seen and covered up!). Mine was covered really well. I notice that man hole sticking above ground every time I go that way in my car now.

Glad you didn't total your sled or get hurt that bad.

I have not hit a culvert like that, but I have however got my track stuck in one. Don't ask how but it happened.

Riding some ditches in my hometown two years ago and came up towards the road where the plow had pushed all the snow and there was one of those 4 foot tall reflectors that had gotten ran over just under the snow and i caught it right on the A-arms/trailing arms/heat exchangers, luckily nothing serious happened other than a loud snap of the reflector pole.

Also was on a lake and were jumping the banks and there was a nice drift of real fluffy snow up the bank and i hit it and my sled disappeared into the drift and i smashed into a wall of dirt about 5 feet high. That hurt my wrists/shoulders more than anything.

my first ride on my new sled in the snow it was dark blizzarding and my headlight was messed up (would flicker above 4500 rpm)and when i went to turn into a feild heading back to my house ive been through a thousand times and i turned a little early cause i couldent see and my left ski went into a drain pipe going under a driveway luckaly i wasnt going too fast but i got thrown ovr the bars onto the hood also shutting the sled off lol and i bent both radius rods on the left side so it wasnt too bad im actualy still using the same lower rod but i had to change the upper because it was rubbing on the shock lol
(bent it back a little before the pic lol)

I feel like greasemonkey told a similar story last year and ended up pretty lucky in his excursion as well... I'd be freaking out and would swear off of ditches for a while lol

About 5 years ago I was riding up near Isabella,Mn with Greasemonkey, Wallygator and a few others. We were ditchbanging Hwy 11 north of Beaver Bay, some people were on the other side of the road and I was by myself on the other side. I started to get sucked into the ditch when I noticed a culvert ahead of me, the problem was that I was riding a Polaris 600 Classic 2upper. To say the least, that was a great sled but she wasn't a ditchbanger!

I started to climb the bank and for the most part cleared the culvert, my right ski and right half of the track caught the top edge of the cement culvert which was fine. I cleared the culvert but not the 4 foot diameter rock on the downside!

Where you see the parked sleds in the distance was where my body stopped flying and the sled came to a rest. No damage to speak of with the sled and I was unhurt but it did mess with my confidence the rest of the year.

It's all about the ride to get there, the destination doesn't matter!

Ha ha ha ha, man this brought up something that will haunt me forever. When I lived in Iqaluit Nunavut Canada (we are allowed to ride on the streets of town in Nunavut) I was riding down the main road at 12:05 or something, everyone was out and about. I was putting along at like 5mph on the side of the road and I road over a man hole cover that had a handle on it, and my right carbide caught and stoped me dead. I was standing at the time and had a hero grip on my bars so when the sled stoped I kept going. I held on the whole time o my head slamed into the hood of my sled, right in the middle of town at the busyest time, so everyone saw it. I just got up and got out as fast as I could. I heared about it for about twoweeks after that no one would let me live it down. Only damage was my pride.

About 3 years ago, we were riding ditches trying to get back home, but it was dark out, every one else was ahead of me but my ZR580 couldn't handle the bumps so I got onto a smooth stretch, I gunned it. First time of jumping an apraoch, which was by accident. When I came down, I ended up taking down a stop sign, flew over my windshield and when rolling. Good thing my bodie landed in soft snow instead of hardpack. Broke both hood hinges, throttle flap, windshield, and a slight dent in the left A-arm.

Last year near Orr MN, this didn't happen to me, but someone I was riding with was infront of me, came around a turn with 2 sleds in the middle of the trail coming the opposite dirrection, he was already in the middle of a turn and when he tried to turn his Viper even further, he rolled his sled trying not to hit the oncoming sleds. The other guys only stopped for a few seconds then left without asking if he was okay.Jack@$$e$ He was okay

-To ride or not to ride, what a stupid question!
-You should never judge a guy until you have walked a mile in his shoes, then you are a mile away and have his shoes
-Ice, snow, or grass, I'll still kick your ass.

I got one,

Last year Christmas morning. Just got 6" of fresh snow. Dad and i decide to go for a morning ride b4 we go to the grandparents for Christmas dinner. We are playing in this field and there was a big snow bank that we have been jumping numerous times all ready that day. Well i decide to hit it one more time b4 we go back. Big mistake, hit the jump, and hit it crooked. landed way wrong on hard snow. my face met the handle bars. was wearing my helmet and goggles. but when i hit the handle bars broke my googles and i had an insta-bleed. nose was like gushing. headed back with a bloody nose. mom wasnt happy with us when we got back cause we had to take christmas pics at the grandparents yet. took a nice christmas picture with a swollen nose and black and blue cheek bone. lets just say that was a long quite ride to grandpa and grandma's house...

not me but a buddy couple years ago,

was out riding on a day that we shoudlnt have been. 35mph winds and winchill at -30. were riding. buddy missed the double culvert. stuck his ski right into the culvert and snapped the torsion rod right off... now we are about 15 miles from home and its freezing cold and he cant drive his sled cause it wont steer. had to call his dad and boy did we get an a$$ chewing. lesson learned... dotn ride when its that cold and pay attention to the culverts.

got a few more of some of my relatives driving thru barb wire fences... but those stories arent too pretty. still alive but is very lucky to be.

Never got a culvet.....yet. A couple close calls though.

Brother in law totalled out his storm one year. Hit a log froze in the ice at about 90 MPH. He was REAL lucky. His leather jacket was tore up. He did end up with a crack in his neck vertabre but never knew it until about 6 years later when he had an xray done to diagnose another problem.

Riding to school one morning my shield on my helmet was icey but I could still see out of it....until the sun came up and hit it the wrong way. Went completely blind for about 10 seconds which was just enough time. I was doing about 100 km/h and hit a pretty bad wash out, my body went flying into the air and landed on the tracks and skidded down the trail and my sled parked itself into the bush. Buddy who was behind me couldnt stop laughing. I could only assume it was funny. It felt like it would look funny. All I had was sore ribs :D

Also detention for being late.

If you cant fix it with duct tape, tylnol, or band aids your screwed.

I hit a grate in the middle of a field, my ski deflected off of it though, so all I had was a bent ski. But evey year sinse then, someone has staked it off and put caution tape around it, so I'm assuming I wasnt the only one it happened to.
