Reading this stuff is weird. People baiting deer, people using rifles... That stuff is not allowed here, illegal.
Bow season opened here a few weeks ago. I hunted 4 days in the past week 4 hrs away on a mini vacation I took. I didn't kill anything.
Got a new bushnell banner for my 870 12g.. need to sight it in. I need a synthetic stock and forend for that if anyone has one.

I am excited to be taking my daughter along with me to MI again this year-Nov 15. Hopefully, this year she will see a deer to shot. Last year was all fawns. Here in the UP, we have a point restriction on antlers if we buy a combo license. Made that mistake when I bought her license. Now she has to shot a buck with at least 3 pts on one side to fill the first tag and 4 pts on one side to fill the 2nd. #$#%$ DNR. They should have an exemption for kids!! We hunt public land, so decent bucks can be hard to come by.
WI seanson opens Nov 21. We hunt on our homestead. Not much in the way of deer this year. Too many houses are going up in the neighborhood. And the %&&%^ DNR tells us they is a deer behind every other tree!! Bull Sh**
But I am excited that my boy will have a chance at getting a deer in his first year.
I shoot a Rem 700 in 30-06 and/or 50 cal muzzleloader, the daughter a .243 and the wife and boy 20 ga shotguns.

Also I'm hopefully bringing my girlfriend with the second weekend of hunting, and a couple of days I'm going to take my 5 year old niece with. I taught her how to shot pretty good so I'll just throw a slug in the ol 410 for her.
Owning a race sled is like having a totally hot girlfriend..... All of your friends want to see it, feel it and check it out..... They all want to know what it is like to ride it, but if they only knew how much time and money it takes to keep one up, they would call you a fool!

I'm with Matt, we do it completely differently in Iowa. Everyone has either a 20gauge or 12 gauge, we get about a group of 10-20 have 4 guys walk a timber(100 or so acres), spread couple guys out all along in valleys and terreces and ridges, and shoot them as they run to us.(sounds dangerous as hell but don't bash it till you try it)

Same here except last year we had a group of 50. And we did it on a 500 acre plot of land. took all day but we ended up with 30 deer down, and no body got shot, but we did have an injury. somebody fell down a ravine and had an ancle sprain.its fun if you are safe.

This year I'll be hunting near Brevik MN which is the southeast end of Leech Lake. I'll be using my Marlin-Winchester 336W 30-30 lever
And I am also bringing my Mossberg 385T 20gauge bolt

Does anyone else think that doing "drives" and baiting deer shouldn't be called deer hunting? I think those are deer KILLING, I just don't understand how you can call those tactics hunting. I'm not waging war here, just asking if anyone feels the same.

I feel baiting is a little unsportsmanlike like, I mean come on at least give them a chance besides blowing them away at 300 yards away with a high-power. I feel that our deer drives are still hunting. We all have shotguns that have limited range and accuracy and sometimes the deer still sneak away from the group. Its not like we heard them like cattle and shoot them in a big circle ha ha. Iowa has a huge deer population though, its amazing the number of wrecks. I understand though. To each his own.

Same here. While I do feed the deer I don't usually hunt over the piles. Every time I have hunted over a 1 gallon or less of corn they have never showed up.
Drives arn't as easy as everyone thinks. The areas we drive are so dense you nearly have to step on them for them to get up and move.

I have to take some exception to that statement. Here is why:
1. If you hunt anywhere where the land is predominately forest, you do not have a 300 yds shot.
2. Even if you have that sight line, the AVERAGE hunter EAST of the Mississippi is incapable of hitting a deer sized target at that range CONSISTANLY. Because of number one. No one practices at that kind of yardage. If you can not make a shot consistanly, you should not take the shot. I don't care what weapon you are using.
So, advantage goes to the deer in my opinion.
There are lots of hunting traditions across the country. I support anyone's traditions even if I don't see eye to eye with it. (You never know when you might be hunting in another part of the county.) Hopefully, I get the same support.

The thing you have to remember is no matter what hunting style it's a challenge.
Baiting takes some strategy in placement and lots of patience to sit there and wait. I definitely don't have the patience to sit in a stand for a few hours a day and for multiple days, especially if you don't see anything....which is why I only make it out a couple times a year for bowhunting.
Calling takes technique and patience as well. I've never done it with deer, but I call in coyotes whenever I get the chance.
Another thing with the above two styles is you have to also be able to control your excitement and not move to quickly or shoot to early and scare them away. Not everyone can do that.
Driving bothers me the most, I understand some people don't have the land availability or the time to find landowners willing to let them hunt on their land. I've spent alot of time driving for pheasant, geese and ducks so I understand the reasoning. I'm a little biased towards drivers since they always sit and watch us walk through the brush and sloughs and wait for us to jump something. Missed a couple of really nice deer because it was between me and a vehicle watching.
Walking is the only thing I've never heard people complain about, so I'm guessing everyones understands the challenges of that.

Yup, illegal to shot deer but just like buck shot..they keep selling the ammo!!!
Maybe they just want to catch people using it so they can make money??
I am jealous of you guys seeing nice bucks. So far I have not laid eyes on a single buck when I had a bow in my hand. The best buck I have on camera is a 2 year old 6 pt. I do have a couple really UGLY bucks running around. One has a palmated right beam with 4 very small points and a split spike on the other. The other has a beam with a brow tine and a burr point with a spike on the other side.
And then late last year, I had a buck with a very nice 4 pt rack on one side and a SPIKE on the other. WTF?? Guess I have some serious shooting to do this year.
Find the line between respect and fear....then flirt with it
