Anybody from the area? I had a job interview over the phone the other day for there and chances are good I got the job. So I might be up there in the near future. How is it up there? I'm hoping rent isn't to crazy, and theres lots of snow.

I had friends that lived there as they were in the military and it has one of canada's major airfocre bases. Its a pretty small place with not much to do unless your a huge outdoors man. To put it simple my dad also military had friend get posted there. This friend despite having 5 yrs left till full military pension, went there himself and left his wife and kids here in Winnipeg. Once there he put in his notice to get out of the military and then spent the next 6 months drive and flying back and forth to winnipeg till he was finished. He put it to me simple, its a place you go to end your life, not start one. But being in the military he cant say no to a transfer, orders are orders but to retire they cant do crap about.
I wish i could give you more insight but there is not much there. consider it a very small military town and convienced as such.
on the other side there are not alot of snowmobile trails but tons of snow.

mackinsaw Thinks it's mighty convient for the neighbor to wait untill there's snow on the ground and to ask me if I would do him a massive favour and cut his firewood for the winter for money as he is incapable. Dang I got some work cut out for the next few days.

I spent a few weeks on base there doing survival training. Jonesie just baisically said everything I was going to say. Once you get there your going to think "Oh no, what did I get myself into.." Mind you every 2nd person you meet in Alberta is from Ontario. Haven't been to Cold lake in the winter time but I know everywhere else in Alberta has crap for sleddin as that wind strips all the snow from the feilds, and the winters are longer and colder than you could beleive.

Hmm, I was hoping there would at least be some great sledding. I wan't to go somewhere within a couple hours of a decent size city so my gf can find a decent job (she's a mobile pet groomer and a graphic designer) and I am a heavy equipment tech (about 6 months from being licensed) but there has to be something to do there to. My gf would shoot me if I tried to move to a military base area haha.
I would have a job where I live but with all this strike stuff with Vale Inco, and Xstrata Plc shutting down all but 1 mine we're down to nothing. I just don't see there being anything here in the near future and think if I can find something decent paying and leave now I would be better off. At least for the next while.

Your not the only one from northern Ontario to try and get out before it's to late. Every second person I've met in Alberta is from Northern Ontario because everythings shutting down. I've heard there's some opportunity in Saskatchewan too, but it's a baren wasteland and I have no idea why someone would want to live there.

I hear of a lot of people trying to get out, I don't think many will come back either, thats the dilemma right now, I can move away to find something, or wait it out, and probably have something better once it turns around, the thing is how long will it take.

People have been leaving since the 80's and it's only got worse. If your gonna wait for the economy to turn around there your going to be waiting a long time..

In Sudbury where I am it hasn't really gotten bad until now. It looks like it's actually starting to turn around already, if |Vale would get back and give the guys a decent contract then I would probably be back to work. Even at that tho, every 3 years be laid off because Vale decides to try and give the guys a bad contract? Thats kinda where I'm at, and there's no telling how long it will be before Vale goes back to work. There trying to take away bonus, pensions, COLA, transfer rights between sites. The guys will never give in, and the company seems to think they will.

I wish i could give you better info, but to put it simple the nearest larger town or city in a 5 hour drive away. There are other small towns near buy but i have never been to any of them except wainwright as its a army town as well and i lived there 22yrs ago. My brother has been there since for training and up and around cold lake. He said that its not a place you would want to live there for long.
Ultimatly its your choice, so it has to make sense to you.

What is it, all army towns up there? I would rather not live in an area surrounded my military towns.
