it runs crappy throughout the whole range of power(low mid high) i cant get it tuned right. somebody havea any tips. its a 1996 ultra sks. the reason y it runs so bad is cuz last year i set it up for tripple pipes and i took it all back to stock so i didnt blow up my only sled. and it hasnt run right since. any tips? is tuning a sled a science or trial and error. what clip should the needle be on. i have the stock jets in. can i tune it w/o the air box on. how much would it cost for a shop to tune it.

ALl i know is that your problem seems like it is baout jetting, because there would be a big difference with the pipes.

I dont have any experience from jetting.
Must be some sort of fuel issue, obviously, so maybe..... Fuel pump? carbs?

go to this thread http://www.snowmobilefanatics.com/forum/...splay.aspx and grab the polaris 96-98 manual, and look in the carburation section.. It will give you all the stock settings.

BTW, the ultra's don't blow up because of the triple pipes, you could have left them on.

Engines don't blow up because of the pipes. They blow up cause of wear - how it's ran and fuel being lean or lak of oil. Having trip pipes on will make a engine proform better.

You might have bad fuel in it, check your plugs, simple stuff.

Do you know if it is running rich or lean? And maybe you should try syncronizing the carbs.

To sync:
Leave the key out!! (So somebody doesn't try to start it on you.)
Insert the roundslides, snug the top retainer that the cable goes to. Do not install them on the motor yet.
Operate throttle to wide open and make sure slides are opening all the way. Just enough that the slide isn't seen in the venturi when looking straight through. (Also make sure the slides move smoothly)
Put a zip-tie on the throttle to hold the slides open approx. 3/8-7/16" (on the engine side).
Using GOOD drill bits, find one that just rubs between the bottom of the venturi and the slide (again on the engine side)(You may have to adjust zip-tie to get a perfect fit)
Adjust the other to match by using the adjuster on the top of the carb.(Make sure you aren't pulling on the cables or it will be off)
Make sure slides open and close all the way again and are still smooth.
Take zip-tie off. - Very important!!!
Mount carbs.
The rest is done on the air box side of the carbs.
Again, using drill bits,
Adjust slides so both are at the same height at idle position.(Adjust using idle speed screws on the side of the carbs.)
You may have to adjust the idle again after you start it. (At idle position, there should be just a very small opening through the carbs. Better to start off low then over-rev and have clutch engage and run through wall.
Your idle mixture screw on the side of the carb---start at 1 1/2 turns out from seated.
If you get a bog when snapping the throttle, start turning in the idle screws 1/8 turn at a time until it clears. Ir you are under 1 turn out, you need to get a size larger pilot jets. (1/2 turn for flatslides)
As you adjust your idle mixture screws, the rpm's will go up or down. Re-adjust idle speeds.
Adjust to get smooth idle quality.
Make sure when you are adjusting the idle speed, you turn both screws exactly the same or the sync will be off.

Have patience, as it may take a while and you may have to re-do it a couple of times to get it perfect.

might be water in the gas. Clean everything! carbs, gas tank etc. if that don't work, your jetting must be wrong.

If it ran good with the pipes on it, just put them back on.

Who tuned it for the pipes. Is it possible they changed more then just the main jets? Maybe they messed with the pilots or needle/needle jets.

Great step by step, drill bit is the best feeler gauge made that every one has.If a guy doesn't want to pull carbs I've used the make up mirror off the passenger side vizzer of an old car I had.It just seemed easier to see all 3 carbs move. With the air box off the mirror will rest against the steering rod.

Get rid of all the old gas. The new gas won't store for more than a few months. Put in premium fuel and run it. Also, check color of plugs.

Another thing to check is your clutches,if they aren't shifting properly on takeoff, you'll get a bog. plowking
