- New sled. What length and where to buy. Other mods?

Hi, new to the site. I tried the search option but couldn't find just what I needed for info.
I recently bought an '05 F7 EFI ACT drive with 193 miles on it for $4K. It is bone stock and in great condition.
Could anyone comment on the pro's and con's of this beast?
Suggested performance mods? Minor stuff.
First on my list of to do's is stud it. I was looking for some suggestions on a few things.
153 or 170 studs
What length
what brand
Where to buy at reasonable prices
Soon as snow flies I want to put some miles on it in stock form to give myself a reference point. Then I would like to add some minor mods to increase power and performance with out sacrificing much reliability. I know these baby's RIP in stock form, but like the typical sledder I always want more!

It is a great sled the 2005 was. The only think I don't like about my 2003 F5 is the narrower track. I have 102 studs in my sled and they do good, but it is only a 500.
For mods, you could possibly go with BMP pipe mod. But then again everyone says their service and quality suck. and then a timing key and clutch kit.

Well with timing and pipe work its going to need a remap on the ecu.if you buy pipes fromd and d and a timing key from them, they do a remap for $100. The studs all depend on how you ride. More trails, more studs. More off trail less studs. Also you could do risers and cosmetic stuff. As for more power you could do a a head mod or something

What would you remap the ECU to? He could get an 06 mapping since he's running an 05, but I don't think it would be required. I believe the 06 map is just a bit leaner on the top end, in which case a simple fuel reducer would do the same thing. If you have some proof otherwise feel free to post it up. The stock ECU is safe for most "trail mods"...ie. key (2.5* or less for EFI), most single pipes, etc. You will have to run a higher octane fuel though; 92 octane for most things. When you get into bigger items...ie. bigbores, twin pipes or Monster single pipe, or motor work/porting, you will need to modify the fuel map via a Boondocker or similar.

I thought you had to remap for a pipe? or is that just for twin pipes and triple pipes?

On the newer Cat EFI sleds (like the Firecat), you only need to modify the fuel mapping for twins or large output singles (like the D&D Monster single). Most single pipes (BMP Stealth/mod, D&D lite, Speedwerx, etc.) will run fine with the stock fuel mapping.
Even if you run twins, a remap will not be sufficient. The only thing a remap will do is set it to a preset configuration determined by Arctic Cat for their factory sleds. Usually the newer mapping will be set for a little better performance, but not for the added fuel aftermarket mods may require. You will need a Boondocker or similar to control the fuel.

Thank you much for all of the replies thus far. I'll propobly stick to clutching for starters and go from there. Maine has a pretty strict noise level law on sleds. Guy I know got popped for around 200 bucks last year! Plus it's hard to find anything more than 87 octane in some places I ride.
Anyone have any suggestion on studs?

Depends on how aggressive you want to get with it. I feel 153 would be sufficient...something in a height of 1.175" would be good. I've read on other forums that 153 studboy pattern works relatively good.
I can't help you with a brand of studs or anything else for that matter. I don't run studs at all...

Another question if I may.
Maine is all 10% Ethanol in our gas. Unplug the wire or not? I've heard both, with seemingly more leaning to leave it plugged in, it's fine. What r u guys doing? And does anyone know how much is sacrificed by unplugging it. I'll try searching this one too.

^ The Cat EFI's have a wire that you can plug/unplug for running ethanol. If you're running 10%+ ethanol, you unplug the wire and it tells the ECU to deliver more fuel, preventing lean conditions from the ethanol.
With that being said, it should be fine to leave it plugged in. I believe the manual says plugged in is safe up to 10% ethanol, which is what most fuel has in it these days. If you run 10%+, unplug it.
That's my understanding anyhow...

Thanks again Quinlan. I agree. I think the oxygen that's already in the ethanol gas creates a leaner than normal fuel /air mixture. In order to compensate for this Cat wants you to unplug the wire which increases fuel delivery over the entire operating range to combat the lean condition.? (I think)
Both my operators manual and the shop manual are worded the exact same, yet very confusing and it's hard to figure out if they want you to plug or unplug for 10%Ethanol.
Anyway, I guess the safest thing to do is check plugs, to be certain.

As far as studding goes, the best rule of thumb I've heard is.
1 stud per H.P., with a bare minimum of 96.
And typically you want to go 1/8" taller than the lug's on the track.
This can vary depending on the purpose for the studding, trail's, oval's, ice drag's.
But as a general rule it applies pretty well.
