I need a little help chasing down a few wires in an Ultra wire harness. I have an SPX harness so hopefully all the Ultras are the same. First one, black and brown wire, I believe these go to the key switch. This one is black/white, coming out of the CDI, in my wiring diagram it says it goes to the gauges to a temp gauge? Is this true? The three white wires go from the CDI to the coils, where does the black go, chassis ground? The white plug is where the stator plugs into the wire harness, I cant for the life of me figure out what that black wire is coming out of the harness and where it goes.

Check out this diagram, it has the black/white wire coming out of the CDI going to the temp gauge. Thats what has me confused.

never owned an ultra but just going by the schematic i would say the brn and black go to the temp sensor. My best guess is there is an overheat protection built into the CDI.
the wht/blk goes from the CDI to the temp guage
three white wires to the coils and the black is the kill wire and it is
hooked to the throttle assurance switches, the kill switch, and the key switch
the other plug should be to the stator lighting coil and acessories

I think I got all but the last one figured out.
First one definitely goes to the key switch.
Second is definitely from the CDI to the temp gauge/light in dash
Third goes to each coil and then engine ground.
Fourth one I am still confused about.

That forth wire on my 01 xcsp that im swapping in a 650 trip in and my 93 xlt plugs into the black and white wire from the cdi. Your cdi is diffrent than the older one that im useing, i dont have a tps and my temp sender doesnt go to the cdi.

OK I am 100% sure that in your third pic, the white wires go one to each coil and that one of the grounds goes to a coil and the other jumps over to one of the screws holding the coolant manifold. The black/white wire in the second pic goes to a corresponding male connection on the chassis harness, I belive it changes to solid black on the chassis side. I am about 99.99% sure that the black/white wire in your last pic conects directly to the coolant temp sensor in the coolant manifold. The black and white wire in your last pic does indeed go to the coolant temp light. I won't see my sled until next weekend to verify the last pic. Here's the kicker, your wiring diagram is for '99 XCR 700/800s and I THINK they used thermostats in the cooling system and may not have had the coolant temp sensors. Ultras did not have a thermostat and used a coolant temp sensor in the manifold, at least in '96 anyway. My point is, verify the chassis side and engine side of your harnesses if they are from different model and year sleds.
I have attached a schematic for '96 SP, SKS, and RMK.

Thanks sinjin, yeah I knew the wiring diagram I had was for a XCR, but it was all I could get at the time. Thanks for posting the Ultra diagram, I think I got it all figured out after looking at it. My ignition is an Ultra SPX ignition I believe, I do know the CDI is from a SPX and the harness is an Ultra SPX. This is for my WC motor so its not in a stock chassis so that makes it a little harder.

Hey no problem, glad to help. What I told you should be right on, I've had that motor out quite a few times. Come to think of it, the motor is out of mine right now lol. Good Luck.

sounds good hog, let us know how it goes!
on a side note... do you have any light clutch weights kicking around... anything under 50 grams?
