First strip it with Tetra Gun Blue and Rust Remover, then use a High quality Cold Blue to refinish it.
I personally like Brownell's Oxpho-Blue, it leave's a much better finish than Outer's.
Read the direction's on the bottle's, and follow those procedure's, and your gun will look almost new.

Can you post pics of what your working with, or at least tell us what make/model you've got?

What ever products you use I would suggest that you do the whole rifle, including the receiver and trigger assembly, plus stripping and refinishing the stock if it's wood. To me, re-blueing only the barrel on any rifle just looks like hell, an incomplete job. If you want to reblue, might as well refinish the whole thing. It doesn't really cost too much and you'll appreciate the rifle more, especially since you know you've done it yourself. Like I say "If it's something worth doing, it's worth doing right."

If the barrel is rusty/nasty, try a little oil with some extra fine steel wool. Cleans it up good before you re-finish it.

When I look for older parts I check with e-gunparts.com.. they always seem to have the older parts I need. I've found detent-balls like your asking for for some of my older guns too.. good site to bookmark.

Just like you I've got something like that for my oldest son.. it's a Marlin 70 I believe, rusted up barrel.. I looked at the rifling and didn't see too much corrosion, took a few shots through it and it was pretty accurate. Just kept it the way it was.. am thinking when he's a little older will refinish with him to let him see what the process is like and the finished product... them older guns with all iron parts really finish up good.

If you're not a gunsmith like me, then take it in. I just got my shotgun back to have the barrel reblued. She looks better than when I got her, that way, anything is to happen, not your fault.
